Don't shop at Payless, you might get the cops called on you.

I have 4 children and over the years my wife and I have spent hundreds if not thousands of dollars buying shoes for my kids and ourselves in Payless stores, mainly due to their standing Buy One Get One 50% off deal. (Despite the lackluster quality of the product)

Today, I visited a local Payless after I got out of work to get a last minute pair of boots for my daughters field trip tomorrow. Instead, the staff called the police to report me as a suspicious person, have me ejected from the store, and say that I am never allowed back.

And this all happened after I had a discussion with the staff about what I needed and why, what price range I was looking for, and then even brought the boots I wanted up to the counter and told them I just had to wait for my wife to call me back to confirm the shoe sizes. The staff even joked with me for a moment about how they were "pissed off" about the behavior of some customers that had just left the store shortly after I entered. The reason they called the police is because I was "pacing" near the back of the store (I was actually browsing all around the store, but did stay towards the back so as not to be in others peoples way), because my wife was at work and like I said, I was waiting for her phone call.

I attempted to contact their 1-800 customer service about this incident but they are closed. I will certainly be complaining to the store manager and district manager. Is this how paying customers get treated nowadays? Hassle them and treat them like criminals? Luckily I was spared todays near $100 purchase from Payless, but I am still livid about this treatment. I'm so upset I'm beside myself, and honestly don't even know what to do with myself. What would you all do?

You know what? I don't even have a problem with that. Do I look suspicious?! I just took this picture for you right now so this is even the clothes I was wearing, except I also had a nice wool coat on over it. It's obviously not a glamour shot so pardon me for not getting my good side.

Honestly all I want is an apology, a good reason would also be nice. I mean, even after it became abundantly clear that I wasn't there for any nefarious purpose they still told the cops I could never come back. And there wasn't ANY type of altercation or words exchanged. In fact, by the time the cops arrived I was already leaving the store, and the cops beckoned me back to demand my ID. The clerks were even laughing about it when I called to get the managers name.

I did not. But I used to work in retail and customer service myself for more than 10 years and have experienced all sorts of things, floor-shit included. You know what I never did? Called the cops on a customer simply for being in the store.

I would love to hear their justification.

"Like, I know, like, we like, talked to you, and like, helped you pick out your selection, and like, you even like, told us that like, you were totally just waiting to get a call from, like, your wife who was at, like, work, and stuff? But it took you, like, 15 minutes, so we, like, called the cops."

Not let it get to me is what I've been trying to do all night but unfortunately... things get to me. In fact, I recently and reluctantly got my wisdom teeth pulled after several recommendations from doctors to do so for some occasional pain. As a result of the procedure I ended up with a TMJ disorder and the stress is really making it hurt.

Dumb++ to call the cops in the first place but then malicious to tell the cops I shouldn't be allowed back.

Honestly? I don't think I would feel good if someone got fired because we all make mistakes, but this seemed more like a game to them and it might be pertinent for them to learn a lesson while they are young with few, if any, responsibilities.

What would you think if a friend came to you and said "I just lost my job because I called the cops on a customer who was just shopping."

It's hard to really place myself in that hypothetical, because I don't think I have any friends who would do something that outrageously stupid and pointlessly spiteful.

I've had friends get fired when they were asking for it, though--showing up hungover, saying inappropriate things to coworkers or subordinates, repeated tardiness or absence--and I never pretended I thought they'd been unjustly let go. Fortunately, none of them ever expected me to.

I've worked restaurant/bar gigs for the last ten or so years, and slowly realized that not everyone has the basic ability to interact with strangers with patience and politeness. It was hard to believe the first few times I saw it, but some folks just aren't cut out for even basic customer service.
