I was not prepared so here's a true story:
Back when I first joined the Navy I worked as a pay clerk in Gulfport, Mississippi. Around this time hurricane Katrina came rolling through. The base set up a huge shelter in one of their warehouses for military dependents unable to evacuate. While most of my command was going to evacuate I was told to go with a few other guys to a shelter to basically keep track of how many people and some other admin stuff.
So fast forward a few days and the storm's starting to get in to full swing. Some of us are standing outside under the huge awning and watching the storm when we see a wooden staircase used to get in to the warehouses being slowly blown down the street. The chief who was there turned to me, told me to go get a few more guys, and to secure the stairs. I try to do this but can only find one guy but I figure it's no big deal. They're wood stairs. Light as fuck.
So me and other guy go running out in to 50 mile per hour wind and rain to grab these stairs. I stand in front of them, stick my arms out, and catch them. At this point I learned two vital facts:
1. Wood absorbs water.
2. A wide surface blown by the wind has a large amount of kinetic energy.
The stairs slam in to me and carry me backwards about ten yards until the other guy catches up and helps me lug them back.
And that is the true story of how I was hit by a flight of stairs.

That said, everyone I dealt with both at the station and on the bank helpline were really helpful, which was nice. Should have a new one by Wednesday, but I can't get money until Monday. Looks like this weekend will be a quite one....
