I feel as if I have become stuck in a musical rutt, I listen to the same music i have been listening to for the last year or so and nothing new i hear exites me all that much, So i turn to you H/A to recomend me awesome music.
I'm generally(by no means exclusivly)into rock music and i play bass guitar so anything with a nice punchy rythm is always a good thing(Alice in chains,RHCP,RATM), I also enjoy acoustic guitar music,(lenny kravitz, Paul simon, Johnny cash) I dislike Sleaze rock ala AC/DC and co. I'm not a big fan of dance music or hip hop although when done well either can be good(grove armada,Robert Miles,Sage Francis,Atmosphere) The qualities I look for in a song include great songwriting, honstey(I can't stand 1D music that is style over substance.
Some Bands I Like (in no particullar order)
Pearl Jam
The Clash
Goo Goo Dolls
Pink Floyd
David Gilmours solo work
Nine Inch Nails
Red Hot Chillie Peppers
Rush
Soundgarden
Hendrix
Janes Addiction
Our Lady Peace(especially thier early work)
Fugazi
Incubus
Smashing Pumpkins
Taco Bell does win the franchise war according to the tome of knowledge that is Demolition Man. However, I've watched Demolition Man more then a few times and never once did I see WoW. In conclusion Taco Bell has more lasting power then WoW.
I like Sonic youth alot.
Is the song on the front page of modest mouse' offical site a good example http://www.modestmousemusic.com
Didn't rate that too highly, not my thing, it's got that modern trendy indie sound about it which just doesn't do alot for me.
If we're gonna throw stuff out there then I'll recommend her. I may be the only guy that does, but yeah. (Note: M.I.A., not Mia. Trust me on this one.)

Yup, thats a pretty good Modest Mouse representation. Didn't like it though eh....
People seem to like Silversun Pickups, they have a strong Smashing Pumpkins vibe so you may dig them. Thats all I got for ya, I don't much dabble in what you've listed.

Wow, i don't think you could have more finely picked out my favorite bands bro. Though i wouldn't put the Clash up there. Pick up these bands and albums, and remember the key rule to "expanding your musical horizons" -- KEEP AN OPEN MIND and listen to a full album 3-5 times before deciding how you feel about it.
A Perfect Circle - 13th step -- best album about a 12 step drug rehab program (hehe) As a bassist, you'll like the low end it has to offer.
Tool -- any album really -- they have a few. I can't say i particularly like any one album ALL the way thru, but each has their "hits", and is worth a listen, especially as a bassist. Justin Chancellor is phenomenal.
Coldplay -- Any album -- Its all pretty easy listening, but sometimes you just want to sit back and let your ears soak in soft tunes.
Lostprophets -- Start Something / Liberation Transmission -- though i disagree with their focus on image, they can still kick out some jams. I also like the fact that they have keys in every song, and killer 4 part harmonies.
Coheed and Cambria - Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness -- You'll need patience with this one. Claudio Sanchez is an aquired taste in vocals, but i think if you're a rush fan, you'll get into them.
AFI -- this is reaching, as i don't really dig anything by AFI before Sing the Sorrow, b/c i'm against anything that is a 3 chord scream fest with fast drums. (Sorry Punk Rock) But Sing the Sorrow is a great concept album. Enough for me to tattoo their falling leaves and the name of their first song on my arm. Plus Hunter is the most underrated Bassist in the rock world today. imho.
For a band you probably already know whether or not you like them: The Mars Volta
For a fantastic band you probably haven't heard - Portugal. The Man (check out the waiter: you vultures album)
The mars Volta are indeed cool i'm on the Portugal The Man site now listening to stables and chairs sounds pretty cool definatly worth checking out further, thanks.

Both fuckin' awesome bands, there are few albums better to smoke to then 10,000 days, so many layers with so many different things going on all at once i still to this day here something new every time I listen to that album.
[QUOTE-Murago]Coldplay -- Any album -- Its all pretty easy listening, but sometimes you just want to sit back and let your ears soak in soft tunes.{/Quote]
I have both X+Y and Parachutes, great background music, not something i'd choose to sit down and listen to really though.
I'm pretty sure i saw cohead and cambria live supporting someone, can't think who though, possibly thursday?

I used to Love AFI and definatly agree about hunter, not to keen on the new album, for me there best quality was the raw energy which IMO they displayed best circa. Art of Drowning( I Love my 3 chord scream fest with fast drums Punk Rock:P )
If you're a big fan of Jane's Addiction, Blind Melon always sounded really close to them to me.
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists is another great band, not sure what they really match on your list, though.
listening to ted leo+.... now sounds pretty good, I have a feeling loyal to my sorrowfull country will be stuck in my head for days. I'll make a note to check out Blind Melon.
Thanks for all the suggestions everybody, my ears will soon once again be in a happy place.
Queens of the Stone Age prior to Lullabies to Paralyze have some really awesome songs. LtP isn't bad, just didn't have that crazy awesome bass that Nick Olivieri provided.
If you want something that's just really grind and doom, Sunn O))) is worth a shot. I think they've got a new CD coming out soon, very heavy on the instrumentation as well.
Despite the fact that you play bass, I'd highly recommend Frank Zappa. No one comes near him in his field. Excellent composer and guitar player all around with some genuinely funny lyrics.
Hope that helps a little.

Audioslave is Kaput. Chris Cornell cited musical differences. He's a bit more folky/moody then the band members. IMO. Definetly more Crooner then shouter. I wonder if that means RATM reunion is in the works! EEEEEH!
I'm a massive fan of Keane, which I would place in whatever category Coldplay is in.
For a singer/project that very few people know about but is amazingly talented, I'll point you to Universal Hall Pass. This is run by Melissa Kaplan, formerly of Splashdown, which formerly included Kasson Crooker, who's now in Freezepop, and helps write/produce her albums.
Porcupine Tree, if you're an album-man: pick up In Absentia. A good representation of their work is probably: Blackest Eyes.
General advice, try to hang out with people who like a lot of music, or go read a thread in DnD about it, my favourite way to find new stuff is just listening to what other people say they like.
I would recommend signing up for Last FM if you haven't already, and just browsing the artists you like to find similar artists. If you don't feel like it, I have a few suggestions.
The Mars Volta
Tool
Porcupine Tree
Oceansize
People In Planes
Coheed and Cambria
Radiohead
The fact that you like Soundgarden and Rush means that you're probably capable of developing musical tastes in new genres. I'd suggest heading into Progressive Rock/Progressive Metal. If you wanted to reach a bit, try Estradasphere. And like Aldo said, In Absentia is a must-have.

Youtube has plenty of neat clips for you to check out there.
Would you guys recommend GNFPWLBN as the Modest Mouse album people should listen to? or something else? Because WWDBTSES is kinda not very good as an album.
This doesn't exactly fit the parameters, but I wanted to mention the band moe., specifically their latest ablum The Conch. I've heard very little of their other stuff but this album is simply Good Music. Best impulse grab ever.
My favourite band in the whole world. Bad Religion were formed in the 80s when punk was thrashier and rawer (not this 'pop-punk' stuff) and the members of the hand were only 16 and 17. 13 albums later they're still around, and they've got a 14th Album hitting this July.
The band's changed over the years with members dropping out, joining and rejoining but the substance has remained the same. They're now a six piece - Three Guitars, Bass, Drums and Vocals.
To me, they encompass what you asked for. Their songwriting is superb and across the years their range immense. They've moved from simple punk in the 80s to iconic choral guitar set-pieces in recent years. Greg Graffin, the lead singer and writer is a professor with a PHD in evolutionary paleontology. A lot of their songs center around the idea of god, evolution and existance. It's Punk, but it's different. The lyrics are thoughtful, the melodic qualities of the backing singing and what the three different guitars play is always very interesting and damn different for the genre.
In recent years they've begun to focus on the importance of Christianity to America. Inamongst all that are plain old fashioned pumping punk against the government, too.
For me, they've just got everything, and while they've put out some dud songs and records in their time, they've been along so long I think that's forgivable. Check 'em out. You might like them. You might hate them, too, but I'm very bias where this band is concerned.

I think, to suggest a band that may not entirely stick out from your original list, but at the same time may be a slightly different direction for you...
The Dandy Warhols
Try Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia. These guys are really happy/catchy/pop/rock kind of vibe. They're too-cool-for-school in a way that is totally not serious and wanky.
Also, dig The Black Keys.
I think Thickfreakness is a good starting point for them. Dense-sounding blues/rock, really soulful, kinda heavy textures but since they're only a guitar-vocals and drumkit duo it doesn't sound overly heavy.

I'm not sure why no one has mentioned this yet, but http://www.pandora.com would be a good place to start. I found tonnes of new music that I ended up buying - ymmv of course.
I would recommend signing up for Last FM if you haven't already, and just browsing the artists you like to find similar artists. If you don't feel like it, I have a few suggestions.
Last.FM is a great program that you should really consider. It'll essentially take anything that you listen to (it "scrobbles" tracks that you listen to) and will create a streaming radio station of different bands/songs, and you can skip through the songs if you don't like them etc, and it goes from "obscure" to "mainstream".
Another nifty feature of this program is that you can type in any band name and generate a radio stream that's just "sounds like", and it'll generate bands similar to the one you listed.
I'm going to third Billy Talent. Both of their albums are brilliant stuff. Takes the best parts of the modern trends for pop-punk and emo and puts them into something fairly unique. They guitarist tunes to Drop D so he can play two guitar parts are once, it's good stuff.
Also, I recommend the Twilight Singers. I write for a music website and their album from last year, Powder Burns, was my album of the year. Simply stunning. Dense, kitchen-sink soul-rock. Great stuff. Can't recommend it highly enough, and its predecessor, Blackberry Belle is pretty great too.
Whoever said "Dashboard" is representative of the Modest Mouse sound is dead wrong. Moon & Antartica has some great songs with that punchy rhythm that seems right up your alley.
Maybe try Violent Femmes' self-titled album.
For something a little more on the punk side of things try The Bronx self-titled, so much energy, really catchy stuff.
All Things Must Pass by George Harrison is really good, listen to the song "My Sweet Lord" and try not to be convinced.
Elvis Costello plays music a little more in the vein of London Calling, with that punk ethic but with a big rockabilly/rock and roll sound and a good sense of melody. Try My Aim Is True or This Year's Model.
Wilco makes some really good rock with some really great hooks. I'd suggest Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Summerteeth (especially the song "Summer Teeth" from this album, one of my favorite songs), and Being There (especially "I Got You" for a more classic rock sound, "Sunken Treasure" for an example of their semi-experimental stuff), in that order.
My Morning Jacket toured with Pearl Jam and they have a really big, epic sound. Z is my favorite album of theirs. Wordless Chorus, Gideon, or Off The Record are good tracks to start off with.
For some weird electronic laptop rock try The Books. The Lemon of Pink is a good place to start, thought for food is another.
Okkervil River for some good alt-rock with a country twist, Songs:Ohia or Magnolia Electric Co (headed by the same guy) are great if you like Neil Young's sound, The Beatles rule, Talking Heads rule, Pavement rules (find Slanted Enchanted or Crooked Rain), and finally you should listen to Bat Out Of Hell by Meat Loaf

Time to delve into my massive Rock folder (which is becoming more and more of a misnomer every day).
2 Skinnee J's - You mentioned you were okay with a little hip-hop, and these guys do it with a kind of rocking style that is cool and irrisistable. I don't even really think I would classify them as hip-hop, although the two lead singers do a lot of rapping.
30 Seconds to Mars - But only their first album, which is rife with cool anthems about living in the future and in space. Seriously one of my favorite albums ever.
Adam Ant - A great pop outfit from the 80's/90's who used a lot of horns. They're just fun to listen to.
A second vote for Bad Religion.
Bear vs. Shark - The singer yells a lot, but the guitar work and rhythms are interesting.
Ben Folds - Awesome piano player. Frequently plays songs about people instead of places or things.
Another vote for Billy Talent.
Bush - Possibly a band you already like or don't, but if you don't have The Science of Things, you need it.
Cake - Cool rock with horns. Most of their songs are very cool to listen to because of the way they layer the instruments. Their bass parts are awesome.
Cherry Poppin' Daddies - Got famous with the swing revival of the 90's, but they play a lot more than that. They've got a great variety.
Clutch - Kind of stoner rock, but I'm not a stoner and I like them.
Another vote for Coheed and Cambria.
Cowboys & Aliens - These guys have great hooks and melodies and would be really fun to play on Guitar Hero.
Deerhoof - If you really want to challenge your musical interests. Might be too indie for you.
Another vote for Drive Like Jehu.
Dropkick Murphys - If you like the whole Irish Punk band stuff.
Editors - If you like Interpol or The Bravery, because they are a perfect synthesis of those bands.
Evergrey - Good old hard rock.
Faith No More - The lead singer's a weird guy, but they played some great music when they were around in the 80's/90's.
Finch - Their first CD was pop-punk-ish, but their second CD is much more post-hardcore and better because of it.
Glassjaw - Great post-hardcore band, the singer might take a little getting used to.
Hard-Fi - Kinda dancey British pop that really gets stuck in your brain.
Harvey Danger - Known for "Flagpole Sitta", they have a new album out that is awesome, and can be downloaded free from their website!
I Mother Earth - Very dark and brooding and very cool.
In Flames - Death Metal from somewhere around the Netherlands. I don't normally like death metal but these guys just fucking rock.
Interpol - Hard to categorize, but you've probably heard them around.
Jimmie's Chicken Shack - Silly name, great band.
Lacuna Coil - Italian goth/metal band, kinda cheesy but fun to listen to.
Local H - Rock band from Chicago who are just poppy enough to get into your heard and stay there.
Another vote for Lostprophets.
Lucky Boys Confusion - College rock at it's finest. Don't worry, they're not a jam band.
Machinae Supremacy - SID Metal, if you like video game music, but also like hard rockin', you'll like these guys.
Mastodon - Hit you in the goddamn face with a club metal.
Monster Magnet - Another supposed stoner band, but they play great rock and roll.
Murder By Death - Not as hard as their name sounds, actually kind of like rockabilly if it had come about in the gold mining days of the 1800s. They employ a cello player and their singer kind of sounds like Johnny Cash if he had a higher voice.
OK Go - The best pop band in years. You may remember the video where a bunch of guys choreogaphs a dance on treadmills. It was OK Go. Both of their CDs are awesome.
Reverend Horton Heat - Probably the most well known psychobilly band. Lots of fast-paced and fun to listen to stuff.
Say Anything - I can't recommend this band enough. I would call them Green Day if they weren't annoying, but I don't want you to think about Green Day at all when you hear them (altough it's mostly one guy playing everything). Video for Alive With The Glory of Love. If you don't like this song then you don't like anything good and awesome.
Taproot - Their newest CD, Blue-Sky Reasearch, is phenominal.
A big vote for Ted Leo and the Pharmacists.
The Cranberries - You'll probably know them from their singles, but they're an all around good band.
The Fall of Troy - Another post-hardcore band, and another great band to listen to when you're angry.
The Hives - Everyone's Favorite Band, fun-as-hell rockers from overseas.
The Hush Sound - Now this is how you use a piano in a pop band.
The Von Bondies - Does the opening song for the show Rescue Me, good music with male and female singers.
theSTART - Rock with a lot of electronic sound thrown in, and a great female singer.
Third Eye Blind - Mayube you haven't given them the chace they deserve, great music with great lyrics.
We Are Scientists - Fun pop-rock band. If Interpol went out partying at night they'd sound like these guys.
Zebrahead - Fun college rock with a bit of fun and funk dropped in.
wow thats alot o music, alot of these suggestions i'm allready into/have already heard.

Well, there you go, hope it helps.
