Dark Heresy - The Chaos WithinThe Daemon has many forms. You must know them all. You must tell the Daemon from his disguise and root him out from the hidden places. Trust no-one. Trust not even yourself. It is better to die in vain than to live an abomination. The zealous martyr is praised for his valor: the craven and the unready are justly abhorred.
- The First Book of Indoctrination's
Welcome to the recruitment thread for the Dark Heresy - The Chaos Within play by post game.
What is Dark Heresy?
If you don't know already, Dark Heresy is based upon the grim universe of Warhammer 40k. Dark Heresy will put you as the role of an Acolyte of the Inquisition in the Calixis Sector. Your duty is simple. Seek out heresy where it may be found and eradicate it. As an Acolyte in the 41st millennium you can expect to encounter witches, aliens, Daemons and more.
The Chaos Within? WTF is that?
You'll have to play to find out! Seriously though. :P
Briefly, The Chaos Within is a campaign setting I have been working on for endless hours during the last month. As I had no previous experience with the Dark Heresy setting, I have had to do as much research as possible to try (notice how I said "try") and stick to the original canon. In the process I have reworked many details and analysed the shit out of my writing...my brain actually hurts a little. That all being said, I feel as though a have a very strong idea of where the campaign will go and some exciting plans (providing you don't break my encounters) for the stuff in between.
How should I apply?

This is the general format I'd like to see used for your applications. I'm not going to get all bitchy about it, but it will sure make the thread look so pretty and organized.
Max 2 character applications per person please.
How many Players?
4 players!
When is the last possible day to get my character(s) in?
Saturday November 9, 2013.
What else?
We will be using the Dark Heresy core and the Inquisitor's Handbook.
Your characters will be starting at rank 1.
Keep in mind that I am new to the system. If you are looking for an experienced Dark Heresy GM who is going to hand you Dark Heresy in ALL its glory on a silver platter, the way you have always had it given to you, than perhaps this is not the thread for you.
I am looking to recruit a group of players who just want to have some fun playing an RPG with a more serious tone set in an amazingly inspiring universe. It is just a game after all...or is it?
If you have any questions or comments regarding past, present or future posts I will be glad to help in any way I can.
Finally, if you find any discrepancies between my posts and 40k lore, feel free to say something. I'm sure there will be some to be found hither and thither.
I look forward to meeting your characters!

Verner Chase, Forge-World Tech Priest
Verner Chase was decanted as the heir to a skilled tech priest who, through little fault of his own, was returned to the Lathes after an aboard-ship failure.
As a result, Verner was "available" to be recruited by the Inquisition as a Technology specialist.

As someone who ran Dark Heresy for a good long while... a good long while ago, I'll just reassure you that the 40k universe is so full of contradictory information that having stuff go against "canon" is practically invited. Plus, it's such a big war-torn galaxy that who knows what can pop up?

Background
Early one morning, the young boy descended into the family armoury to help his parents set up for the day, as was usual. As he turned the final corner in the winding mazes of access tunnels leading to the workshop a horrific sight came into view. Debris from an obviously massive struggle lay strewn across the floor of the room, and two hulking masked men in combat gear lay dead at Titus' feet, multi laser burns criss crossing their bodies. In the room itself, five more masked brutes in combat gear were combing through the detritus littering the floor, picking out the still functional guns and devices and putting them in a large sack.
Knelt in the centre of the armoury were Titus' parents, beaten and bloody. Towering over them was a lithe man outfitted in an extremely ornate version of the armour that his comrades were wearing, the obvious leader. The man was unmasked, and Titus could see his pale sneering face. Rage filled the man's dull blue eyes and the pencil thin moustache atop his sweaty lip danced as incoherent babbling erupted from his spit flecked lips.
Quickly ducking behind the corner, Titus Grendel watched and listened as the leader of the gang yelled at his helpless parents. Apparently, the Grendels had modified a certain batch of weapons which were then used in an attack on the very gang that he and his thugs belonged to. Without waiting for a plea or a reply the armoured man pulled out a glowing plasma pistol and fired, obliterating the heads of both Grendel elders and partially melting the workstation behind them.
Silently processing the events of the last few microseconds from his vantage point, Titus made the decision that would put him on his current path. Survival. He turned and ran up the corridor, away from the devastation in what was the family armoury. Unfortunately his clumsy footfalls were heard and soon the gang members were hot on his heels as he ran through the maze of tunnels, eager to eliminate any witnesses to their deeds. Diving into a nearby supply room, Titus quickly barred the door behind him and began planning his next moves as his parents killers tried to gain entry to the room.
Two minutes later the Grendel boy was crawling through the air ducts leading away from the storage room, having left a small surprise for the thugs. Just as Titus came to the end of the ducting system and slipped into a crowded public area, the gang members broke into the supply store. Instead of the scared young boy they expected, they found an empty room and a faint buzzing sound. Looking at each other in confusion, the combat suit clad men entered the room to search it just as the las charge pack that Titus had set to overheat exploded. As the improvised explosive was carefully positioned between two rather large pressurised tanks of promethium, the resulting explosion was excessively large and devastating; not only atomizing the eight gang members present, but also destroying the Grendel armoury and domicile.
Later Titus would discover that one of the men killed in the explosion, the sneering man who killed his parents, had been the son of a local underworld baron – Gaius Nihilus. Nihilus, leader of the Tortured Sword Clan, subsequently put out a bounty on the head of young Grendel.
In the ten years succeeding this tragic event Titus has been hunted high and low throughout Gunmetal City by a wide variety of bounty hunters looking to cash in on the hefty bounty, and gang members looking to curry favour with the Tortured Sword Clan. During this harrowing chase he has had to develop many skills to aid in his survival, becoming in proficient in gunfighting and cultivating quite the silver tongue. As has always been the case, Titus' favourite activity is tinkering with technology of any kind, often finding ways to improve upon a devices original function.
Description
Only by staring into his cold grey eyes could one catch a glimpse of what makes the slim Metallican unique. A careful observer might notice a fiery spark of creativity and intelligence inside those steely eyes. Most unsettling is the sense of looking into the face of a person who has seen and experienced things far more terrible than could be asked of most other men of his age.
Titus' only real distinguishing feature is a blue decorative electoo located between his shoulder blades. One of the last things he received from his parents, the small feathered serpent is supposed to represent life, knowledge, and wisdom in an ancient tale passed down through generations of the Grendel lineage.

Background (I may have written to much o.0)
Kaltia Tybalt, born to Sargent Gar Tybalt of the IG and Medic Kali Tybalt. She was born on the world of Iocanthos in the Calixis Sector. This world is strife with consent violence from opposing warlords and their armies each trying to stay in control of the Ghostfire harvest. When she was but three years of age Kaltia's first Ghostfire Taskforce arrived at Port Sufferage. This year in particular saw more fighting closer to the once thought of neutral Port City then in previous years.
As needed her parents, both attached to the Guard, where stationed on the outskirts of the City when the Unit that Sgt. Gar ran came into a heavily armed group of rebel soldiers. It was not close to a fair fight. The rebels had the high ground and had ambushed the unit. None survived.
Young Kaltia Tybalt, now without parents was given into the care of Sister Xanthe, the Sister Hospitaller who runs Port Suffering’s hospital who gave her over to the Schola Progenium, in lieu of her parents' deaths for the Emperor.
Kaltia excelled at nearly everything she was tasked with learning at the school, from learning the Creed, to any physical challenge presented to her. She was smart, quick, and most of all absolutely dedicated to giving her all to her studies and to her faith in the God-Emperor.
Her gift was not over looked.
Palatine Rhiannon, leader of the Order of the Ebon Chalice had kept her sights on her when Sister Xanthe gave her a message saying that this child was..smart...to smart for her age. The Sister Hospitaller was correct in her assessment. Kaltia was requested to kneel before the Canoness Goneril at the Abby of the Dawn.
This, was a dream that Kaltia, even in her earliest memories wanted. That Icon of hope, the one that will be able to stand in against the Dark and prevail. Even if that meant her death. She knew that just like her parents, she would willingly give it in order to stand against that which is good.
It was this spark that Sister Xanthe had seen in her all those years ago. It was that spark that a Palatine of the Daughters saw. It was this spark that the Canoness saw when she agreed to placing Kaltia Tybalt within the Sisterhood as a Novice. It was this same spark that led Kaltia into being given the task of working with the Inquisition and it is with this spark that Kaltia is embracing for all that she is.
Description
Looks: White Hair(dyed), tanned skin, piercing blue eyes, Aquila tattoo across her chest.
Size: Stocky (1.70m/ 90kg)
Kaltia Tybalt is not a tall woman, but what she loses in height, she gains through years of intense physical and mental training. Once she was accepted into becoming a Sister, she was allowed to dye her hair that iconic white. Her eyes never changed color growing up, nor did Kaltia want them to change, the shocking blue stood out from afar.
Not that she shows anyone,or many even know of it but across her chest is an Aquila tattoo.

Also, @Dread__Cthulhu and @spacecaptaindickjustice since there is a chance that we may only have 4 or 5 applications total by Saturday, are either of you interested in posting a second application to balance things up a bit? Essentially, if I have to choose 4 out of 5 applications, it is unlikely that I will choose 2 of the same role. Just sayin.

Background
Izak Tem was born on the Misericorde and grew up as part of the great clan that maintained and operated the port-side maneuvering thrusters. His affinity for the Warp was discovered innocently enough, when the young man healed a friend who had taken a bad blow from some moving machinery. He was tithed to the Black Ship and sent to Earth, where he was presented to the Emperor. Bathed in the Emperor's light, Tem was redeemed and Sanctioned as a Imperial psyker. While he resents the loss of his eyes to the Black Ships, he has an appreciation for his perilous position as a Sanctionite. He has accepted his role as an Acolyte and awaits the commands of his superiors.
Well if it helps any, I was planning on playing Titus as more of a traditional Scum with a couple of tech oriented skills (only taking the Reclaimator class this level and perhaps next level) so there shouldn't be too much overlap with a Tech-Priest at all.
EDIT: Oh i see @Dread_Cthulhu has a psyker up now anyways
@spacecaptaindickjustice its all good. I am learning some of the details as we go, therefore I am not familiar with ALL of the careers, but I got it now.

Anyone else can feel free to give their input on the matter as well, but it seems as though Tech Use refers to placating the spirits to help in tests that involve USING devices, where as Technomat Trade seems to refer to REPAIR on said devices, especially that of technology from the Golden age. Because the Trade skill says that you are using the skill in a way that you do not necessarily fully understand, it sort of implies that it is used for the repair of devices that you do not understand (i.e. Golden Age tech). I think the main thing to look at here is if you did NOT have the Technomat Trade skill, you would not be able to placate spirits within Golden Age tech, and that is one of its benefits. It seems as though the two skills function separately (although I can see why one would think otherwise). As far as I understand it, the main difference is that Tech Use helps with devices that work but are not functioning to full capacity, while Trade refers to devices that are not functioning at all.
Thoughts?
Dread, you can pick which PC you want to use since I needlessly made you submit two.

So here are some questions for your PC's to answer. This will hopefully help develop your PC a little more. Your Inquisitor is Tiberius Hector. Additionally I would like each of you to roll 4d34 please (this will generate some background story between your PC's).
What is your personality like?
How did you meet your inquisitor?
What does the Inquisition mean to you?
What will you sacrifice?
What do you desire?
What do you hate?

[/spoiler
What is your personality like?
Izak Tem is a brooding soul, resigned to his role as a Sanctioned Psyker. He has a black sense of humor and a cynical mien
How did you meet your inquisitor?
Izak was requisitioned, like a piece of equipment, from a pool of Sanctioned Psykers, his ability at healing and his unreadable mind making him a valuable asset to the team.
What does the Inquisition mean to you?
The Inquisition is validation of his worth to the Imperium and is his place in the Imperial hierarchy.
What will you sacrifice?
Izak will sacrifice himself, should the need arise, operating as a combat medic in a pinch.
What do you desire?
Validation as a human.
What do you hate?[/quote]
Heretics, particularly rogue psykers... perhaps with a touch of envy.
25. You and _____ lost a mutual friend or relative. Who was it and what happened?
4. You think _____ is woefully misinformed about the world and you have decided to teach them all you know.
1. _____ thinks you are not the sharpest tool in the shed and is working on enlightening you.
16. _____ saved you from doing a huge mistake once. Ask them what the mistake was?
Solid, Sister Tybalt has a very stiff sense for following the letter of the order.
How did you meet your inquisitor?
As a Noviet with the Sisters, it is quite often that Kaltia, meet and talked with those from the Order.
What does the Inquisition mean to you?
Perfection.
What will you sacrifice?
Sacrifice!? You ask me what I will sacrifice?! I am an Adepta Sororita, do I need to say more? My life, my mind, and my soul has been sacrificed to the God- Emperor and to my Order, I do not need to explain sacrifice.
What do you desire?
To give my life to the God-Emperor.
What do you hate?
Those that claim to be above the law and above the God-Emperor and his Church.
