This is from Joystiq... yeah yeah yeah, but they've got pictures of promos and employee instructions from Gamestop and they swear that the store has verified it, so take it as you will.
Apparently, the new price of the PSP core price is $169.99. If this is true, then it's about damn time. Also, Sony managed to keep this under wraps pretty damn well.

It's a really silly price drop imo, it's still in the same psychological price range.
Yeah, I think that's about the best way to put it.
I'll have to agree... a $150 price would probably do a better job of jump-starting sales. Speaking of which, we have no idea how much a PSP currently costs to manufacture, do we?

Over 20 million units sold worldwide, game sales haven't been really that stellar.
Sony isn't concerned with the game sales for it anyhow. It's a multimedia device, not just a gaming handheld or whatever.
Here's a question: How's the UMD thing going?
They should be concerned about game sales, since game sales are how the video game companies are supposed to make money when the machine is sold at a loss/small profit. Especially now that UMDs are dead.

Jesus christ, guys. $30 is a good price drop. Goddamn.
Did you guys all complain when Nintendo dropped the price of the DS by $20?
The thing is, whenever I look at a console and ask myself "Do I want this?" I look into how many games are out that I would want for it. If I can match the console / handheld price in the price of games, I go for it.
The PSP has two games for it I want. Or rather, one is out, and one is coming out (MGS: PO and Disgaea). The price drop does nothing for me, personally.

A $30 price drop on something that I had previous interest in buying would be great news.

No kidding! And it does put it in a different psychological price range as this puts the core pack down to $170, breaking the $200 barrier.
Not to mention there are plenty of good games for the PSP. Just off the top of my head: Lumines, MGS: PO, Loco Roco, X-Men Legends 2, GTA: LCS, Metal Gear Acid 1/2, Puzzle Quest, Mega Man Powered Up/Maverick Hunter X and soon Disgaea and FFT: The Lion War.

Don't forget Gitaroo-Man!
I only have three games for my PSP, but boy are they good. MGS: Portable Ops, MG Acid 2, and Gitaroo Man Lives!.
The only reason I bought my PSP is because I used the $40 off coupon from Circuit City. Otherwise, I would have bought it at this new price.
My biggest issue is bringing myself to paying $40 for games. I want Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, Sonic Rivals, and a few other games, but they're all $39.99.
Like, today for example. I had to decide between Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins for $20 and Touch Memory for $10. I ended up with Touch Memory.
My DS Library is around 35 games and my PSP library is around 5.
That is a really good play by Sony, considering that tjhe average Joe Sixpack consumer who is just out for a handheld will see a DS Lite that can play games, or a PSP that can play games and view photos, play music, surf the net, watch movies, access podcasts, has a huge gorgeous screen, and has "good graphics" out of the box for only $40 more.
This is good, I own DS and PSP and both rock (DS Lite rocks at +2 though), but the PSP needed the price cut. So yay for all the people who dodged paying the higher price

No, because it's Nintendo. They could raise the DS's price and people would still be sucking them off. Just look at the excuses people made when the discussion on friend codes popped up.

This isn't Gamefaqs.
That having been said, both systems offer very different services to consumers. The price will always seem reasonable to those who appreciate the features within.
Yay for paying less. I can't believe there is this much shit throwing at the mere announcement of a price drop, it's impossible to have PSP threads here.

I hope this isn't just GameStop doing a price change...
I've heard NOTHING at work, and I really don't want to have people coming in bitching that the PSP is $40 cheaper down the street and that I should put on my wizard hat and robe and make the prices in the system change for them because they think they can pricematch.
We USED to pricematch, but now TRU is under new management now. It's a result of us being sucky and no one shopping here.
So, yeah. I had planned on buying a PSP from a friend or even eBaying a cheap one. Any success stories on getting a cheap PSP (in the realm of $100-$130) on eBay and not getting ripped off?

Yeah, I'd MUCH rather see a drop in software pricing.
My boundary is $29.99. If a game isn't priced as such, I wait for a sale or price drop, or I look for a used copy via second-hand store or Craigslist.
Heck, I have a hard time paying full price for ANY game, portable or console. (That is, unless the pre-order bonus is too enticing, a la Castlevania: PoR.)

No one, and I mean no one, walks into a Wal-mart and sees the box on the bottom of the rack and thinks "Hey, I'll surf the net with that."
This is a handheld. The other functions have been marginalized, to be frank. IMHO, they should've dropped it to $150, which is where the DS STARTED, 3 years ago. It's high time, don't you think, and that kind of a radical price drop can work in their favor. It did for Nintendo when they dropped the Gamecube to $99.

sony lol.
In either case, it's a good deal. I bought mine used for ~$155 shipped a short while ago, so I'd've probably paid the extra $20 for a new one.
Yeah, I think that's about the best way to put it.
I suppose I might vouch for one at that point too.

Well... how much money would they actually be losing if they sold it at that though?
....
The heart of an orphan.
I hate to be the one to say this, but has Sony ever had a problem with selling at a loss in the past? <.<;;
If they did have a problem with that they would be a bit paranoid right now with the PS3.
Still the PSP has been around for awhile so they could be making a profit off the system at its current price at least.

Dead as dodo. Most studios have pulled their support for the format, and most retail chains don't even carry UMD movies anymore.

PSP drop: 0%
DS drop: 13.3%
then
PSP drop: 0%
DS Lite: 0% increase
DS drop: 8%

People are cheap.
All I play on my DS is Meteos and Pokemon leaf green.
I beat New Super Mario Brothers and really liked it, but I had a hard time with replay, so I traded it in.
