Scholarships for Graduate (M.A.) Students

To preface this discussion, I do know that the government offers federal loans to graduate students, and that many universities offer assistantships (which are like fellowships for Master's candidates). I happen to be taking advantage of both at the moment, actually, but I would also like to find out about other scholarship opportunities for graduate students. Naturally, I'd prefer to cover my remaining tuition without relying on loans (my assistantship only covers a few classes each semester) as much as possible. Unfortunately, I haven't found much at all - at least not anything that applies to me.

I am in an Asian Studies program, if that helps. Thank you in advance.

Does your school have an office of graduate studies or something similar? They often have resources with information about finding scholarships.

Is it possible to just take the amount of hours covered by your assistantship? I knew some people who were GA's when I was in Grad school and their assistantships covered enough to be a full time student (9 hours) but not enough to meet the average course load of 12 hours, so they just ended up taking an extra semester to graduate if they didn't want to pay anything in tuition.

Also I don't know if your school or program has this, but mine always received a certain amount of free hours through the university to be given to students, so that might be something to inquire about with your program director.

Talk to your thesis advisor about options for your field.

You should be looking for relevant fellowships from the funding agencies that your field is supported. Scholarships in graduate school are given for current achievements so make sure you can sell yourself well.
