Any new maps with this? I mean, sure, new gametype is great, but I prefer a nice new locale to hunt around as generally people play the gametype for about a week then give up on it.

Was underground, comin up to some big underground factory. Lot's of Locust with that cross bow.
We did a pretty good job of clearin them out, but a buddy of mine caught one in the gut with a shot gun, and something happened. Dunno what exactly, but either the Locust' corpse was crawling around the floor and blasting us, or it was clipping very badly and all I could see was the top half.
Regardless, it blasted my friend, and started heading right towards me. What makes it crazy is that it was insanely fast and shooting it didn't stop it at all.
I prefer maps like that, where there is a bunch of cover near each team's spawn point, then a no man's land in between.
My favorite part of Gridlock is how fast the battles become heated. A few of them, namely the Mausoleum, take awhile to get started and many times the action comes in bursts. But in Gridlock, right from the beginning to the very end, there is pretty much constant firefighting.

I don't know if there's a looming threat for updates and such on consoles being paid-for-only, but signs that there won't be are always appreciated I suppose.

exactly, because you have that one dick on your team who insists on going for the sniper rifle
Then you have to go with him and whip out the shotgun or else he'll get his brains blown out
The whole level is basically a race for the Sniper and Boom.

I should hope that it's common knowledge by now that pay addons for FPS games, be they micropayments or expansions, never end well. No matter how awesome the stuff is, the bulk of the online community will not play it. It's been, what, a decade now since this effect was first observed?

My bad about the map. But old news? That 'old' thread was about people complaining that we'll get charged for it. This shows the details and that it's free.
So, nah.
On me apparently, because there was *one* post about it on friday. I sincerely apologize, as I did attempt to research as much as possible. But I guess a new thread is in order anyways.

Tell that to Halo 2. Only about 5% of the online userbased opted to wait for the maps to go free.
I think it was determined in that same thread that this wasn't actually the content that Epic wanted to release for free, rather it's just a heavy patch. The downloadable content was supposed to be a new map pack. I think.
I hope they change it so when its 1 vs 1 and someone grenade tags or uses the HoD and you both end up dieing that it ends up as a draw instead of how it is now where the player that tags you wins.
And i wonder what the new game type will be like, assasination is a pretty decent game type but hardly anyone ever plays it so i hope this has a wider appeal.
Bleeding out? Sticking a grenade to them doesn't do anything to them at all.
YOu mean Execution? That's supposed to happen. Unless your within a certain distance, you can't kill a downed person. You have to get close (As in, close enough to blow yourself up as well) in order to kill them with a grenade.
Also, new news!
Gears Annex Details
gearscon.jpg
The Gears of War website just updated with details on the new gameplay mode that will be hitting Live as an update on April 9.
Along with Annex, the download will also update the Assassination mode. Hit the jump for the details, and yes, Annex will feature respawning. Brian Crecente
Annex
Objective: Capture and hold key locations to collect enough points to win the round.
Description: In Annex, you win by keeping control over key map locations, or objectives, long enough to collect a winning number of points. Every map has two to five identified objectives available for capture, with one objective active at a time. Objectives are based on map weapon-spawn locations and have a potential value of 60 points toward either team's score. Teams collect those points by maintaining ownership of an objective until all its 60 points have been distributed. Every second that a team controls an objective, the team gets one point. When an objective falls to zero points, the next objective is selected at random.
On the HUD, the current objective appears below the team scores at top left. This indicator contains several pieces of relevant information. The weapon icon inside the circle indicates which weapon-spawn location is being used as the objective. The compass along the outer edge of the circle shows the relative direction to the objective. The number inside the circle indicates how many points remain at that objective and the background icon color indicates which team currently controls it. No color means the objective awaits capture, a red icon means the Locust Horde hold the objective and a blue icon means the COG hold it. When the icon in the indicator circle fills, the corresponding team's score also changes color, the team begins collecting points from the objective, and the point value of the objective drops.
On the map, a projected ring marks the physical location and boundaries of the objective in the world. The ring's color indicates the current captor: White means neutral, blue COG, and red Locust. To capture an objective, players must stand inside the glowing ring uncontested for a short period of time. How long depends on how many teammates stand in the ring at once. One player can capture an objective in eight seconds, two players in four seconds, three players in two seconds, and four players in one second. Once a team takes an objective, they are not required to remain inside the ring to maintain ownership. The captured objective's points drain until an opposing team member enters the ring, or until its points fall to zero.
Round scores can be set as low as 120 points or as high as 480 points. The first team to reach the target score wins the round.
Respawns: Infinite, wave-based every 15 seconds.
Options:
Selected Map: Which map or series of maps to use.
Number of Rounds: Number of rounds required to win the match.
Bleed-out Duration: Amount of time before a player dies while DBNO.
Round Score: Number of points required to win a round.
Friendly Fire: In a player match, whether teammates can damage each other.
Private Slots: In a player match, number of player slots reserved for friend invites.
Weapons Swapped: In a player match, whether the person who sets up the match can determine whether weapons that appear in the maps are replaced or removed.
Assassination Updates
Before the update, the Assassination leader had to unlock map-spawned weapons by picking them up and dropping them. Now, all weapons are available to all players from the beginning.
Before the update, you could kill a leader in Assassination using the same rules as in Warzone. Now, you kill leaders as in Execution.
MS are charging for the maps initially, but they'll be free after a while, from Mark Rein himself:
Epic thinks the way to maximize the return on Gears of War is to give the maps away for free and Microsoft thinks the way to maximize the return on Gears of War is to sell the maps. So what we’ve agreed to do is to put these maps on sale at a reasonable price then make them free a few months later.
I overheard that there's some kind of "rage mode" in Gears of War that is activated if you just run into a shit ton of enemies and start blastin them with the shotgun. Truth, or was he just pullin my chain?
I've attempted it, and never really got any results, just mowed down after a three or four kills.

I, uh, think you're getting your chain pulled. If you run into a "shit ton" of enemies, you're probably pretty likely to get more point blank shotgun blasts off, which would lead to you getting kills, but still, there is no rage mode.
Why is there only a max of 10 available games in each setting (ranked vs non ranked?) or is that just how the game rolls?
I also hate games that turn into nothing but a torque bow/shotgun fest. Come on, people. Lets play it like the single player game. Tactical moves and such, please.

Good luck with that. Most of the maps are small enough that zerg-rushing the enemy works better than tactical shootouts. Not to mention, the fact that you can take quite a bit of damage before dying makes people less hesitant to blindly rush into the line of fire.

It sounds like you (Sleep) are expecting gameplay more akin to Rainbow Six: Vegas. Even then, guys will occasionally take a shot to the head and keep going.
Gears rocks my socks with visuals, and the Locusts are way more interesting than generic Hispanic mercenaries. However, I prefer the gamemplay of Vegas, not to mention the significantly better normal-person-to-douchebag ratio. You ought to try both to see what you prefer.
Either way, the new patch and eventually-free DLC are a win-win for everybody.

I still have fun playing the online, I just wish it was comparable to the single player, where squads entrench themselves and advance on each other or sneak around until someone is dead.
Every now and then I'll play people who, like mentioned above, simply Zerg rush. If it's just me and another guy, with the other two trying to sneak about, and we get rushed by everyone with shotguns, it's aggravating, but not majorly. I'll get over it.

Well, while like everyone else said...most of the matches will be Shotgun matches, you do get a tactical match every once in a while(depending on the level...good luck with that on Gridlock). I mean kind of like...forgot the name of the stage, the one with the downed helicopter and warehouse. It was 3(my team) to 4(other team) and we were pretty much getting slaughtered in straight head to head shotgun fights.
So, instead we decided to hole ourselves into our base with the rifles and sniper rifles and wait for our opponents then mow them down while they tried to get close with the shotguns. We managed to win 5 straight rounds with that tactic until they finally got smart to it and decided not to run in with shotguns like idiots. However, by then it was already too late and we managed to come back from a 1-8 round.
But, again, that is rare. And like the guy before me said, it's basically because of the layout of the stages. The stages are all so small that just going in and shotgunning your opponent to death is usually a lot better than the other options.
I also agree with the guy who said you should try Rainbow Six: Vegas, usually the team that try to go in super aggressive with the shotguns is the one who loses and the rounds a usually a lot slower and involve a small bit of tactics.

I don't think it's that shotgun rushing is the best option. It's just that you can get away with it because the other team is playing that way too. If the other team is trying to deathmatch then you can just camp them for an easy win. The only problem is convincing your team to do that.

I think the consensus is that those games are rare.
Tom Clancy-esque games tend to be slower and more deliberate, which is why I suggested Vegas. The characters and enemies are also as exciting (read: boring) as your Aunt Tilda, but custom characters really make up for it. My advice is to get both games and alternate as your mood dictates.
Otherwise, you could try to round up like-minded Gears players, and see how that turns out.
I have mixed emotions about the lancer getting an upgrade. When i originally started playing gears online i was a bit disappointed that it wasnt like the single player but now i actually enjoy the fast and frantic nature of the game even though i know thats probably not what the developers intended it to be.
Also, the Lancer is pretty damn useful now at mid-range just not a lot of people use it or use it but let the enemy get too close to them, bullet lag probably has something to do with it too. But ill welcome the increase just as long as it stays a mid-range weapon and isnt too much more powerful.

Lancer update? Cool; that's the weapon I use 95% of the time. When I play online I'm the annoying guy who fills you full of lead before you can close with your shotgun or chainsaws you in two before you can get a shot off. And runs away while firing uncanily accurate blind shots if you rush him. If it's going to be more powerful... then watch out.
Edit: Also, I really hope that the new maps turn out to be worth playing.

Mostly because in a 3-on-3 match, my team usually sets up a formation.
we have our sniper set up in the middle of the bridge, and then two of us on either side behind cover with the Shotty, protecting him.
If our sniper gets his head blown off, then both of us go and flank their sniper.
Usually it works.
I didn't see any mention of maps in that article.
Aye, there's been no mention of any new maps. Also, this is old news. We've known about it since Friday.
