It is with a truly heavy heart that we must confirm that Paul Walker passed away today in a tragic car accident while attending a charity event for his organization Reach Out Worldwide. He was a passenger in a friend's car, in which both lost their lives. We appreciate your patience as we too are stunned and saddened beyond belief by this news. Thank you for keeping his family and friends in your prayers during this very difficult time. We will do our best to keep you apprised on where to send condolences. -
On November 30, 2013 at roughly 3:30 PM, Walker and a companion were driving in Santa Clarita, California when his Porsche swung out of control and crashed into a tree. The car immediately exploded and burst into flames, killing both Walker, who was the passenger, and the driver.[27][28]

Too soon...
He is best known as Brian O'Conner of the Fast & Furious franchise, one of the main characters.

There were early rumors that it may be a hoax, but it's been confirmed by several sources that he has crashed and was killed in a fiery explosion. Sucks, god be with his family and friends. Don't let other people drive your fastest fucking cars guys. Or just don't buy a car.

Wasn't a fan of the guy, but my heart goes out to the friends and family of both men.

No, the real lesson is don't drive like an asshole and don't let your friends drive like assholes if you're riding with them (and if they refuse, don't ride with them). It's a tragedy, but a tragedy that very easily could've been avoided.

This happened 8 miles from my house. Crazy. Fast as it looks like they were going, lucky they didn't kill anyone else.

Seriously. He just figured out the difference between behaving the way his movies has people behave in the movies and how it ends up in reality.

Yeah, that'll teach him to be a passenger in a car for a charity event.

Well, not a page as gone by and already we're in the "edgy" phase of a celebrity's death thread.

Let me say this. He wasn't my favorite actor. But he was a big part of one of the finest fucking action series in decades.

And that's a helluva thing for a guy to be remembered for.

    That's a damn shame

Hope they deal with it tastefully in the F&F franchise. He must've filmed a buncha the new one already, must be some temptation to write his character out.

I don't think it's edgy to point out that cars which crash into trees don't explode like bombs unless you were driving so fast that the word "accident" must be prefaced with "inevitable" to retain a modicum of honesty.

I believe those Porsches have the gas tank in the front though, which might explain the explosion/fire.

The gas tank is behind the passenger, so when it blew up he was the first to go. All they found of the two were scattered remains in the vehicle.

Wow, this very sad. Looking at that picture, you have to be going absurdly fast to do that to car (or to make a car explode period.) It's insane that he would take such a blatant risk.

I don't usually address reports publically, but since it's now happened more than once I feel I should clarify: if the news of a young man dying in a car accident is deemed by you to be "tabloid trash" or "TMZ material" you should seriously consider the fact that you might be a colossal fucking prick.

Incredibly sad. He was well-known for the F&F series, but I became a fan of his work after seeing Running Scared. It was an incredibly dark story that went into some pretty fucked up places, and I thought his performance in it was very well done. I feel horribly for his daughter and his friends who were the first on scene. From all accounts, he was one of the good guys.

Really? So how fast do you think this R8 was going to do this:

    audi-r8-fire.jpg

the materials these sort of cars are made from, they go up in flames and they're reduced to a pile of ash.

  • XixXix Miami/LosAngeles/MoscowRegistered User regular
100% Aluminum cars like an R8 will melt down completely to basic parts if they catch fire, even at 0 mph.

  • SarcasmoBlasterSarcasmoBlaster Austin, TXRegistered User regular
Well, I don't know shit about cars really, I'm just assuming you have to be going pretty fast to make them explode on impact. Maybe not, idk.

  • XixXix Miami/LosAngeles/MoscowRegistered User regular
No there was definitely a loud powerful explosion as the car crashed. The occupants had to have been killed damn near instantly. But after the fire rages there won't be much left of the car, making the scene look even worse.

Isn't the point not to make statements like that if you don't know their veracity? This is how horrible gossip and goosery spreads, by people who don't know much about a subject guessing.

The location of the tree pretty much in the middle of what's left in the car makes this extremely amateur observer think that it really was the speed and not just a fire.

I would not be the least bit surprised to find that speed / the friend not having experience driving fast cars was a factor.

Regardless, this is still a tragedy, and unless you are an expert on forensic analysis of car crashes and have access to reports gathered on the scene, it's a bit goosey to comment or attribute the crash to irresponsibility.

By all accounts he was a good guy, and my heart goes out to his friends and family.

The driver was professional race car driver Roger Rodas.

His 8 year old son jumped a fence and ran toward the flaming wreckage in a desperately hopeless bid to save him.

The sads. All of them. :(

Also, since it was a professional driver behind the wheel, does that make it a lot more likely that it was mechanical failure?

I don't think the fact that the car caught fire or even exploded is an indicator that speed was a factor in this accident, so much as the fact that the car is wrapped around a goddamn tree.

This is a movie series of fucking dude-bros fist-bumping over the half-naked women sprawled on the hood of their car. It spawned a generation of fucking ricers that think it's cool to bling out your honda civic and drive fast. Ohhh look at that slick clutch action dude... brooo!

The car is at the side of the tree, it hasn't hit it head on and the tree gone straight down the middle, the hood is still in one piece!

That's sort-of the point; the car looks like it hit the tree going sideways, but it still connected with enough force to rupture the gas tank and wrap the rear half of the vehicle around the trunk.

I think it's more than reasonable to consider speed a factor.

    It's just terrible.

Drive safe, especially this time of the year, with busy roads, sub-par road conditions and plenty of lovely holiday distractions.

All I really have to say on the subject of the crash is that it's difficult to draw conclusions about what happened from the damage photos, when:

    -the car caught fire
-the emergency services very likely cut away significant portions of the bodywork to gain access

plus that particular car appears to be a mostly-carbon Carrera GT, which will burn to practically nothing once a fire takes hold.

So much as people are keen to castigate the driver for irresponsibility, it's worth bearing in mind that even professionals specialising in accident reconstruction tend to need to examine wreckage in great detail to determine what actually occurred in circumstances like these.

    Tragic accident all round.

Did EMS personnel wrap the rear half of the vehicle around the tree? Do the vehicle's still pristine & painted side panels look terribly fire damaged?
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office stated that speed was a factor in the crash. Burned rubber and doughnut marks were found in figure 8 patterns on the road near the crash site, but it was not clear to officials if these were related to the crash.

I'm not going to speak ill of the dead, I'm just going to re-iterate:

    Drive safe.

Did this happen on a track or closed course? Between the driver being a pro and there being fenced off spectators, at a charity event, that seems like a possibility.

If it was a closed course event and not public roads (assuming the car was speeding by a substantial amount) it really makes anyone claiming irresponsibility look like a goose.

It was not on a closed course.

EDIT: They were not at the charity event - they were driving away from it.
