Ok, this seems to happen when a new format comes out.Being on the cutting edge has its serious drawbacks. It looks like the blu-ray specification is getting reworked. I have bias against blu-ray but I don't want to see this happen to anyone. My current question is, how will this affect PS3 owners? I'm sure sony will say something about this soon.

**EDIT**

Looks like the ps3 is safe, for now atleast.

    From the article:
Blu-ray machines with upgradable firmware likely will have a greater chance of conforming to the mandated format this fall.

Safe to assume that with the PS3s network connectivity that it's Blu-ray drives firmware is upgradeable?

Yep, the only thing that will affect PS3 owners is that they'll need to download the new firmware update. The only people it screws over are the ones that bought the other early Blu-Ray players.

So owners of older BD players will still be able to play movies just fine, but they will miss out on PIP stuff? The requirements for added memory are pretty nice though. Hopefully they won't drive prices up.

I'm sure now that the diode problem is semi sovled prices should be going down rather than up. I still find it amusing that blu-ray has so much excess space that you can just do the PIP stuff by including 2 copies of the film on one disc for those non Java enabled players.

That one might lose it's license and be useless to owners very soon - because of a bug you can read out the keys for the DRM - which means you bought a useless piece of software....
