"A fundamental concern for others in our individual and community lives would go a long way in making the world the better place we so passionately dreamt of."
"I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear."
"Real leaders must be ready to sacrifice all for the freedom of their people."

I'm really taken aback by how much this has upset me. One of my teachers in secondary school devoted an entire semester to South Africa, Steve Biko, Nelson Mandela. He's such a huge loss, but I'm glad his illness came to an end.

This isn't great news, but in a way I am happy for him, 95 is a helluva run for anyone, let alone someone with his history. It's not often that you can say that a truly iconic individual has passed but Mandela is one of those people that genuinely will be remembered for hundreds of years.

I have the utmost respect for someone who was so humble about changing an entire country, let alone shifting the perspective of an entire planet.

You know, I actually don't know a lot about what Nelson Mandela did. I know he was incredibly important and that this death is incredibly sad, but otherwise I have a historical blindspot in regards to him.

    Ummm.

    You know the usual choices.

Either ending apartheid in South Africa or becoming president of it?

I'm under the impression that he did achieve more through peaceful protest than violence. If there are any experts on south African history here, I'd happily defer to them.

It's give and take really. He did more at his trial than at any other time to foster change.

It's a shame that despite the hard work he put into creating a country of opportunity that the government of the country has never successfully managed to capitalise upon it.

Don't feel too bad, I thought he had already died.

You learn about these really influential people in history class and you just assume that since all their famous work was accomplished before we were born/too young to remember, that they are part of the past.

Nelson Mandela hadn't been a huge name in the news for a long time. His last public appearance was in 2010. If you aren't old enough to remember his election then I don't know if you really know who he is other than a well known historic figure.

Yeah, this is a sad loss but it's not a tragedy. He lived a full life, he wasn't taken before his time.

The tragedy was that he had to spend so much time suffering from illness.

A person like him doesn't deserve that.
