iMac Optical Out Issues

Sp basically I want to flat out disable the Optical out on my iMac. It permanently thinks its switched on when there is nothing plugged into it, and this is topping my internal speakers from working. Obviously I want them tow work, and this seems the most reasonable way to get them to.

Now before anyone say it, I can't send this in to Apple to have them fix. I have over 200GB of stuff I realy can't afford to lose (not all of it is porn, either) and no way to back it up, and on top of that if I send it to thme it means being without a computer for a while, which I cannot afford to do. However, my iMac is still vaguely in warranty, as I it was bought in October last year.

If this has to be a hardware thing, then so be it. I studied CompSci for a couple of years (never finished it though) and my last PC before we went Mac only was hand built, so I'm pretty good when it comes to getting my hands dirty. Having said that, I don't know how to even open this thing, let alone know what the inside are like.

So I ask your help oh glorious denizens of H&A. What can I do?

So you've chosen "Line Out" under the Sound preferences in System Properties, right? Have you also made sure that it's selected in your Audio MIDI Setup (Applications::Utilities::Audio MIDI Setup)? Sometimes that will change it as well. I'm not sure if there even is a way to actually disable it. Is the problem just that the audio out doesn't work? Are you sure that it's using the Digital Out instead?
