Schiphol does ok on the quality (and I think these days the shopping section outside customs is larger than the inside customs section, but it is expensive like crazy. I'm fairly sure the best restaurants are at the big hotels there, but I don't pay too much attention.
Partially at fault is that Schiphol is mandated by its shareholders (which include both the national government and the city of amsterdam) to be profitable on being an airport and on being a shopping centre. It cannot subsidize one with the other to adjust to economic situations.
I'll be taking the bus home. My sister, the baby, is splurging on flying. Which, due to taking the airport bus and being early for the flight like she is going to be and then driving home, isn't really going to save much time.
meanwhile I'll be chilling on the bus catching the view or a movie, then chill out on the ferry, bus, ferry, bus, home
i'm always tempted to fly to pax instead of taking the train. it's only about 50 extra bucks total and it saves me like 9 hours over the course of the trip. but it's slightly more annoying to get to the airport than the train station. blah.

I fucking love that airport.
This place is actually pretty good; I've had a meal I would give a three or four out of five to.
But it's overpriced.

There's a lot of malls in downtown city centers that basically have signs that are like "No Poors Allowed".

This actually kinda reminds me of downtown Annapolis and their single public restroom located on one edge of the town on the pier.
Worst airport I've ever had the misfortune of going through.
