Pop Review: MMXIII

Clint EastwoodClint Eastwood My baby's in there someplaceShe crawled right inRegistered User regular
This 2013 we had is just about cashed out and I thought we should have a thread where we could talk about our favorite pop culture of the year. If threads like this are verboten then feel free to toss this in the bin, but what can I say, I'm a sucker for lists. And I'll only speak for myself here, but I can confidently say that year-end lists have helped me check out games, music, movies, tv shows, and books that I wouldn't have looked into otherwise.

So yeah, let's rap about what we liked this year. Examples would be the usual suspects: albums, songs, TV shows, movies, games, novels, comics. But hey, if you want to talk about your favorite threads of the year, favorite youtube videos, favorite tweets, even stuff as horrible as your favorite post of the year, favorite awful internet controversy or favorite atrocious internet meme (doge), don't let me stop you. I don't want this first post to get bloated with a bunch of images and youtube clips so maybe I'll post my own opinions later, not that anyone's interested in what I think.

The one request I would make is that, beyond following the usual rules, please don't inline a million youtube videos in your post about how much you loved some artist or album. Use your words to tell us why you loved stuff!

this year I finished watching Friday Night Lights and realized I would probably consider it the best tv show I've ever seen

not that it came out this year, but I was thinking about top shows for this year and FNL kept bubbling up

Favorite movie is The World's End. Favorite game is probably Volgarr the Viking? Favorite album is No Blues by Los Campesinos. The other categories I haven't even consumed enough of from this year for it to matter (like Breaking Bad would be my best show, but the only other TV show from 2013 I've seen is Comedy Bang Bang & Venture Bros).

I kind of lost track of movies and TV this year. I watched a lot of Mad Men, New Girl, Mindy Project, and I don't think I saw more than three movies in theaters this year. And none of them were really any good! Oz the Great and Powerful (mediocre), The Internship (bad), and the Great Gatsby (decent movie, amazing drinking game).

Speaking of which, this year's best drinking game was The Great Gatsby Drinking Game. Drink every time Gatsby says Old Sport.

My favorite album this year is Chvrches' The Bones of What You Believe. I can basically listen to the whole album over and over for a whole work day, and never get tired of it. Just so catchy and that voice and synths and retro in the best way and the bounciness gets to my happy place

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktoaj1IpTbw

Also, even though Ellie Goulding's Halcyon was released last year, I bought it early this year and love it so much, so that takes second place.

Umm, for tv shows, I am really torn up about this, there have been so many great ones this year. If we're going by new shows, I would have to go with Hannibal over Brooklyn 99, almost human, sleep hollow, and the bridge. For returning shows, definitely breaking bad, though i have loved arrow, elementary, eastbound and down, parks and rec, and a whole bunch of others. whew, tv is so good right now doggies.

Favourite TV show is a tough one, Justified is some of the best television around right now, but I am a sucker for Person of Interest. The former is an expertly crafted drama focusing on one man's efforts against the criminal underbelly of Harlan, the latter is an exciting vigilante show wrapped in cloak and dagger intrigue.

Favourite movie is Star Trek Into Darkness, it may have been cribbing from an old story but it was action-packed and gorgeous with an excellent soundtrack and a positive message. And everything involving Vengeance had me giddy in my seat.

Song of the year is hard, but I found out this year that I have a taste for Aussie Hip Hop so I'm going to have to give it to

these guys. Unite/Pale Blue Dot from the same album is really good too.

Favourite Webcomic is Paranatural, but the Phantom Menace arc of Darths and Droids (as that is where I am up to at this stage) is close.

Favourite game is either Splinter Cell: Blacklist for its smart return to form after the very disappointing Conviction, or DmC for just doin' God's work.

knicks should be 1st. yankees were just pleasantly mediocre this year, and the jets turned out a lot better then people were expecting.

I've heard The Mother We Share on the radio a good amount and it's pretty great, I might have to check out the full album on Spotify if it's as good as you say @lostwords . I was kind of worried it would end up being a bit one-note.

the knicks season is definitely the most objectively hilarious, but i hate the yankees and jets so much more

and between the yankees average age being somewhere in the mid 40s, and geno smith coming back down to earth and then subsequently crashing through the earth, there is lots to look forward to

here are the albums I think I have listened to the most this year/expect to continue to listen to more

    old- danny brown
    cupid deluxe- blood orange
    anxiety- autre ne veut
    cerulean salt- waxahatchee
trouble will find me- the national
    stranger than fiction- kevin gates
    days are gone- haim
    major arcana- speedy ortiz

I also keep listening to the song Catholic Girls by The Dangerous Summer

I haven't even listened to the whole album, but the song is really good in such a weird way for me. It's feels like an evolution of a song that I would have gone crazy for in high school, but it doesn't feel dated, at least not in a bad way. Like what I'd hope a screamo band from back then could turn into. It has an earnest and strident kind of quality that it shares Japandroids, who I've also played a butt ton of despite their latest being a 2012 release.

Yeah, the whole Chvrches albums is actually really good, though Mother We Share is proooobably still the best song on it. Recover is close on its heels, though, and I'm partial to We Sink and By The Throat as well

it has a brief lull in its runtime when they give the dude singer lead vocals for a single song, but it's not like offensively bad

his performance just gets put into pretty harsh perspective

My album of the year is Love is Everything by George Strait. It's got a remake of his first hit single on it and it's just the best. Playing them back to back is an incredible look at how he's changed over the years.

I dug Justified, Bob's Burgers, Homeland, Game of Thrones, Psych, New Girl and Brooklyn 99 on the tv.

Trying to think on books, I know I'v read some good ones this year. Just gotta figure out if they were released this year or not.

I might make a more exhaustive list later, but my favorite album of the year is an easy pick: Daft Punk. I'll admit I bought into the hype pretty heavily with this one but it absolutely delivered, in my opinion. Nothing I listened to all year mashed up disparate sounds and genres as effectively as RAM, and it's one of the few albums I can listen to straight through without skipping a single track. Instant Crush-Lose Yourself to Dance-Touch-Get Lucky is a ridiculous string of bangers. This album makes horrible yacht rock fun, which is a fucking feat in and of itself. Contact is a perfect closer. This is the 2013 album I've listened to most this year, and when I think about this year I'll think about blasting Doin It Right with my friends on the way to a Halloween party, or playing Get Lucky by the pool.

I played a shitload of Animal Crossing this year, that would probably have to be my favorite game I played this year. GTA 5 was really good but I don't see myself returning to it unless they release some single-player expansion stuff, and Fire Emblem got just a little bit too anime for me to love it as much as previous installments.

The new mario game on Wii U was great but I only played co-op with my roommate, so I can't say that it was my favorite. It's super fun though, shame it's on such a brick dud of a console.

  • lostwordslostwords Registered User regular
Oooh for games, the last of us was definitely my favorite game this year. Tomb raider is a close second. Just wish the multiplayer for both was better, but the single player was plenty good enough. For handhelds, I dug animal crossing a bunch, though I lost interest faster than previous versions, but I think that's more getting older? Also fire emblem was top notch, yeah! Also, puzzles and dragons for the iOS is probably the game I've sunk the most hours in, to my shame

Film of the year has to be Pacific Rim. Giant robots punching giant monsters in the face, an awesome soundtrack, stunning visuals, and a man called Stacker Pentecost who has a tendency to deliver badass speeches. What more could anyone want from a film?

I'll just say Breaking Bad has ruined TV for me. Nothing seems good. Only really good movies seem to come close.
