Coop game to play with 9&10 y/o kids

zyxwertdhazyxwertdha Registered User regular
Hey, I'm looking for suggestions (other than Minecraft) to play Coop with my 9 and 10 year olds. I was thinking something along the lines of Diablo 2, but not so dark.

Any thoughts?

Everyone says Spelunky is too hard for kids but I think that's bullshit, kids deal with incredibly tough games better than adults sometimes.

On PC? Orcs Must Die! 2 has pretty and colorful graphics. It's a kind of a tower defense game. Not sure if you can play with more than 2 players though. It's currently 50% off at steam for the next 22 hrs, but if they win the community's choice vote it will be 75% 6 hrs from now. --> http://store.steampowered.com/app/201790/
There's a demo, try it out!

Sanctum 1&2 are some other cheapish tower defense games with coop, but with a robots&aliens theme rather than swords&magic and the graphics aren't as colorful. Not sure what the player limit is on 1 but on 2 you can definitely play with 3 players. ---> http://store.steampowered.com/app/210770/
They are also 50% off on steam for the next 22 hrs and have demos so you can try them before you decide to buy or not.

If you want a kid friendly Diablo-esque game you might look into Marvel Heroes. It's essential Diablo the MMO but with Marvel comic book characters. Though that's not one computer co-op. It's Free to Play with all that entails.

Any of the Lego series. They are only 2 player but still fun. The 3 of us play just hot seating one spot and rotating.

They're a bit old, but the Marvel Ultimate Alliance games are pretty fun co-op games that are easy to get into.

Assuming we're talking PC here, Sonic All-Star Racing Transformed is much like Mario Kart with Local Coop.
Monaco is a stealth game/Pacmanesque game. It really focuses on teamwork, one person gets in trouble and the rest works to get him up again.

I think it's Titan Quest that's basically Diablo II with Greek mythology instead of .. well.. Diablo.

And enough cannot be said for Torchlight and Torchlight II. They are Diablo-like but just... better, in just about every way IMO. Both TL and TL2 have tremendous replay value for different reasons, and are generally both prettier and a bit lighter in story than the Diablo games.. again, IMO.

And it seems like all is dying, and would leave the world to mourn

Torchlight and Torchlight 2 are pretty great. A lot of ex-Blizzard people worked on them, which is why they have the Diablo "feel", but with significantly less grimdark. The first Torchlight has no multiplayer though, so Torchlight 2 is the game to get if you want to co-op.

If you're ok with shooters, maybe check out the HD Serious Sam games. They have co-op for up to sixteen players. While there are some humanoid enemies, the majority of them are fantasy robots/mutants/etc, and you can turn the blood/gore off completely.

If we're talking PC, X-Men Legends II also got a PC port.

It would help if we knew what platforms you had access to.

Whoops, forgot about the no coop in TL1. Yeah, 2 is what you want.

I second the Torchlight recommendations and I also wanna suggest something from a completely different genre.

Do try out Re-volt if you do not know of it already. It's a classic racing games where one races RC-cars and by classic I really mean classic since it came out in 1999 but it still holds well as you'll see if you google it. Here is one of the many reviews and videos about it:

Something fun, this isn't strictly co-op, but I had a blast sitting down with my nephew to play Kerbal Space Program together. He would tell me how to build the rockets, then we'd explode them. Eventually we got something approximating a flyable rocket.

They might be old enough to handle themselves in Dungeon Defenders. Hacking and slashing with a touch of tower defense in between waves of hacking and slashing.

Maybe someday, they'll see a hero's just a man. Who knows he's free.

    LEGO MARVEL

So fun, I'm playing it right now with my partner and we're having a blast.

I'm playing through Lego Marvel and Lego DC with my 4yo son, and I'm having just as much fun as he is so I have no doubt they'd also work for 9 & 10. Tons of replayability. You go through the story missions once as a predetermined pairing, then you have to go back through all of them is "Free Play" mode where you can change to any of the characters/suits you've unlocked so you can use the different abilities to get collectables that weren't possible during the initial run-through.

We've played more Marvel than DC so far because my son is infatuated with Spiderman/Venom/Carnage.
