Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
I remember watching a behind-the-scenes/making-of about the Fresh Prince and the first day Avery and Smith met was during a preliminary meeting of some sort for the show with producers and whatnot. And Smith, being the cocky young rap artist about to be on TV, strides up, sits down at the big table in the room, and props his feet up. Avery then just looks over and in some proto-Uncle Phil moment tells him to take his feet off the table, take off his cap, and show a bit more civility.
And he credited that initial moment of ribbing to the beginnings of their dynamic.
I've always loved this video, because he never took the Shredder role as a joke, he just dove right in. He probably spent more time thinking about Shredder than Eastman and Laird did!
So last night I had a dream that I was walking around some big city with a girl, and these two biker dudes showed up and started pushing us around and shit.
And James Avery rushes in out of nowhere and beats the crap out of them, glances at us, and rushes out again.
Keep fighting the good fight, Dream Angel James Avery
He strikes me as the kind of person that would be "above" doing a role like Shredder for a kids' show, or at most reluctantly take it for the money and then rarely talk about it afterwards.
Instead he is just incredibly happy with the job, and saw it as a legitimate character with depth. He just had this zeal for acting that makes me sad he didn't get bigger parts after Fresh Prince.
Honestly, even though he didn't get bigger parts after Fresh Prince that show is still in syndication and we can be happy that he was doubtless completely financially secure as soon as that show aired.

goddamn
dat laughter
Sorry to learn about that after his death
Yeah it took me a few seconds to remember that that's a pure fantasy/dream sequence

Especially this bit because the whole literal song and dance was improvised with Avery having absolutely no clue about it beforehand

"Did you hear the bad news? Uncle Phil died."
It took about a half second of stunned silence for me to consider how this may sound, seeing as I actually have an Uncle Phil.

Hold up, I think there's something in my eye.
Fresh Prince of Bel Air forever
I just about cried when I read the news yesterday.
So very upsetting.
Man, Uncle Phil was the kind of father figure we all needed.

Now that I have a baby son of my own it downright breaks my heart in a way I didn't have the perspective for before.
