The transition team has drafted a new document of Guiding Principles and New Rules for our community. These rules will go into effect on November 25. 2024.
Bought the game and I've been playing for a bit on pieman's server. I first spawned at night only to be set upon by two zombies. Suffice to say, I died.
My second spawn went more successfully. I managed to survive the rest of the night and gathered two wood piles and kill a pig. After harvesting two stones, I had myself a stone hatchet. I moved west, gathering as I went and spent my first full night on Beach Mountain. I didn't know it was Beach Mountain at the time, but after an uneventful night nestled among the stones, I moved out and got my bearings by locating Big Civ. After considering going south to scrounge, airdrops and chatter from Baconator convinced me to avoid the area for now. I have relocated and gathered a fair amount of resources in an effort to establish a more permanent dwelling. Now, in the truism of real estate, "location, location, location".
Wolves have ceased being a problem with a bow, but now I will have to go scrounging to get a research kit for a pickax.

Spoony I think I committed the mistake you avoided. Pretty sure I set up camp right near Baconator. He capped me this morning and got 5 research kits for his troubles. I'm sure he was quite pleased.
I've been reading in certain Rust wiki's that walls and other such objects will eventually despawn. Is this true? If so, it kinda makes building some epic fort less appealing.

In some servers, building decay is turned on. I think this is generally by default, but I'm not sure. The reasoning is that, without decaying buildings, a server will eventually be completely littered with abandoned structures. Some you could destroy, but since foundations, pillars, and ceilings are indestructible, those would just sit there forever until the next server wipe. If you get enough of these, In smaller trafficed servers it's not a huge deal, but it can really bog down the larger servers.
That said, even if you are playing on a server with decay on, it just means that you have to do regular maintenance to keep it up by regularly repairing decaying sections, which require a very small amount of wood. So you can still have a huge fort, you just have to make sure you tend to it regularly.
Yeah, the server I'm on has decay disabled, so there's a higher chance of running across abandoned structures, but there's also something haunting about finding a completely constructed base with a single hole in the side of it, it's contents removed, it's inhabitants scattered.
You know what the inventory system needs? The ability to swap locations.
That, and when a chest is big, make the interface match that instead of giving me this dinky side window with a scroll bar.
Yeah, Rockmonkey and I were discussing this a little while playing last night. The interface really needs an overhaul. Even just basic stuff like being able to use the scroll wheel to change your quick items and making items swap when you drop them on each other. Hopefully this is coming eventually.
I think I'm camped out over Ballzack Mountain currently. I'm hoping to make it over to the PA settlement tonight (in 8 hours or so) when I finish work. I'm three stones away from having a Boom Stick !
Definitely liking having NoSleeper on, I keep most of my stuff on me, logged in this morning to find my door broken and my storage box raided but I still had most of my stuff all they got was my spare hatchet.

I have to say, on Pieman's server, I really feel like the bolt action rifle should be craftable. I'm good with the rest of the other current weapons not being so, but the BAR fits in better with the hand cannon and pipe shotgun. Just my opinion of course, but I'm curious what you guys think.
Also, it felt when I was playing last night that Baconator's group really felt like they were running the server. We wouldn't even bother running for airdrops because we knew those guys would be there in greater numbers and with better equipment. Which means they got all the stuff too, and the cycle continues. Not sure how we're ever going to be able to get some of the better weapons and armor with those guys camped out in the middle like they are. It also means they control most of the lootable areas in that part of the map, further cementing their dominance.
I'm not sure how to counter this though. More airdrops? Make crates drop more items? Eliminate some weapons and armor altogether? I dunno.
They have large reserves of kevlar and weapons too, so killing them once or twice won't change things dramatically. (Except we'll suddenly have more Kevlar/Weapons).
Fight them the same way as a smaller force would combat the larger one in real-life: guerilla tactics. The goal isn't to win a fight, it's to make them regret getting into one.
One of them chased me earlier. I was hunting solo killing wolves in the middle of no where and it was just one person but when they get the drop on you AND have superior armor and guns all you can do is run. I ran to my old base which has at least three metal doors to get through so I was safe.
He was pretty dang good at keeping up with me and still shooting accurately. Barley made it, was down to 7hp at one point. Burned through some medkits.
I've decided I need to change how I play solo. I should lurk and become predatory on solo players instead of minding my own business. If I get the drop on someone surely I'll have a chance. Not like I should worry about pissing them off as they shoot on sight as is.
Definitely need to coordinate more of our group on at once and get some traction.

I think Otto's idea of teaming up with the other group (slowriot, was that it?) against Bacon would be a good idea. Just do a single huge raid of their base, split up the spoils, and go on our merry way.
Just to clarify, a dozen is a good number to get going. Too many people and you get killed every single time you stop focusing on the horizon and try to chase a pig or are mining a large rock.
to answer a couple questions that have been posed.
1. BAR is going to be craftable, so is Kevlar. Established players already have kevlar so making it craftable won't affect them but it will give smaller clans the ability to compete more easily.
2. It will likely take a concerted effort to equalize the power holders on this server. This game rewards both short term tactics and long term strategy. Baconator and his people run their own Mumble server and anytime they are on together they are on voice chat together. This gives them a distinct tactical advantage.
As for long-term strategy and planning it's a good idea to have a backup base or three. This could be a suicide base (requires you to suicide and spawn on your sleeping bag to get into it) or something prohibitively expensive to get into. This can be done relatively cheaply if you do not care about how it looks. Or it could be a series of cheap non-descript shacks in the hills that hold backup gear and supplies.
Always hunting in pairs if you can, will further help.
Also, this game rewards aggressive anti-social play, but I have yet to see any large alliance or political efforts made on any of the servers I have played on.
Thanks to J, downer and whoever else got me to the base camp. J and I farmed some zeds later and I feel like I'm established now and dying in the field doesn't wipe me out, got some backup weapons, harvesting junk and such.

No problem. I know the main tower is getting a little cramped, I've got my building slowly taking shape. After our initial firefight with Bacon's crew, they jumped me in Big Civ again. I killed Hydro as he came around the corner cause I heard him walking. Someone else capped me as I reloaded my shotgun. I spawned grabbed a pair of hand cannons and dashed back, and got Bacon as he came out, but their third guy (the shit talker, I forget who he was) got me again. So yeah, I killed a full Kevlar/Automatic weapon armed guy with a hand cannon.
These guys really aren't all that great, and I think it's going to be time to put them in their place soon. I know grenades aren't amazingly effective at blowing doors, but I'm going to start farming the hell out of materials for them since I have the schematic, and unlike C4, we can craft them. Speaking of, I managed to beat them to an air drop and get away as well later in the night. Snagged 5 C4 for my efforts and gave it to Bigity to drop in the main tower.
We should start scouting them out and figure out exactly which bases they are using (seems like they move around a fair bit) to make sure when we hit them, we hurt them. Also if anyone has a Metal Window and Metal Stairs available for me to research because I'm an idiot and placed mine without researching them, that would be awesome.
Anyone have a clue where I can find the BP's for metal foundations and walls? I've spent the better part of 2 real days looking for these two items and can't find them. I've found windows, pillars, and doorways and researched them, but no luck with walls and foundations.

The very same. I thought we were safe. A bad mistake.
Yea that was supposed to come off as tongue-in-cheek :
The internet tends to ruin that kind of thing. If you still need to hook up with the PA folk and I'm in game let me know and I can help you out.

We need C4 for this though. Lots of it.

Thinking of getting this but if the PA guys are all going to be playing while I'm asleep it wont be much fun.
