New laptop battery, but unplugging power cord leads to immediate power failure

Win8 reports good charge (currently 78%), but unplugging the power cord leads to immediate power failure.

I thought maybe it wasn't seated correctly, but it shouldn't be showing up / reporting power numbers to Windows if so, right?

Any ideas?

If you still have the packaging I'd just take it back and swap it out. Or see if the place you bought it from can test it, at least.

It's possible there's something wonky with the contacts, either on the laptop or the battery.

If you have the old battery, taking it in to get tested as well (if you didn't before) could also be a good call. A lot of computer shops will test stuff if they can, usually for free, since they know a bad result is all but a guaranteed sale.
