What's going on with these PS2 games?

TarjanTarjan Registered User new member
Hi All, I have just brought a second hand PS2 slim line from the USA (NTSC U/C) while on holiday and took it back home to Australia (PAL).
To make a long story short I have been playing a couple of game so far, Wild Arms 2 for the PS1 and Dark Cloud for the PS2 both are or course NTSC U/C.
But when I try and play Suikoden 3 and Van Helsing the machine tells me that it can't read the disk.
Both disk's are in good condition and of the same region could someone please throw some light onto the matter.
Thank you in advance!

Might just be the PS2 itself. Problems with reading games/dvds is a known problem with the PS2 slim.

Edit: Have you tried cleaning it? It's possible that is the issue.

Thank you Julius as I have never had to clean it before what would be the best way to clean it, and with what?
    Thanks once again.

Try using a cotton swab with a bit of glass cleaner on the end of it and dabbing at the reader. Not a whole lot though.

PS2's also get the alignment of the lens out of sync fairly often. Fixing this isn't a horrible thing but it does involve disassembly of the unit and their is one ribbon cable you need to be careful of.

Are the discs all the same colored backs? I know one of the colors always went out before the others did for my old PS2.

Here's a guide over on Arstechnica that looks like I remember.

    Nod. Get treat. PSN: Quippish

Yeah this. Just be careful as you would be with any piece of technology. Just swab it a bit until you feel it's clean enough.

If it doesn't work you can go with what DevoutlyApathetic mentioned. Though I think you should really exhaust all options before taking apart things. I noticed the slim at the house we rented last week had about a 50% chance of reading the disk so I just reset it till it worked. Just something you have to take in stride really.

Thanks everyone I looked on you Tube and found a couple of things to look at but in the end I just used a cotton swab which did the trick.
Crazy how the little things can help thanks once again.

I miss the days when all you needed to fix a console was a deep breath.

I don't miss the days of just about fainting to get my NES to read carts.

Also this is a fairly common issue with PS2 systems, depending on the environment and use, the realignment/lens cleaning is something that needs to be done every couple years.
