It never occurred to me that the gun might not be able to take that type of ammo
Oh yeah guns list their ammo capability.
Its annoying and stupid but I can see why they did it.

Yeah it's something of a balancing factor, or to make you grind more stuff if you're feeling cynical, it stops you just bringing the most powerful gun to every quest 'cos it might not load the ammo you need.
I downloaded the demo for the 3DS. Did they change how longswords work? I played the fuck out of Tri, and they had a side-slash that I think was pressing left/right and two other buttons. But I can't remember what the input was, it was all muscle memory on the Classic Pro controller.

X+A+Direction. Just pressing X+A does the same thing but hops you backwards.
Most weapons have some sort of X+A attack or combo or similar.

Well my dreams of running around in loligoth armor were shattered when I loaded up some poison s and completely destroyed every bee I was trying to get anything from. Time to learn how to make poison smoke bombs.
The Wroggi Revolver bow gets a bonus to poison, so with poison coatings it usually can poison on a shot or two without breaking the insect. I keep an un-upgraded one still for whenever I need bug parts.
Take that and a stack of coatings, plus materials to make more (and a combo book or two), plus some poison smoke bombs (toadstool + bomb material) and you should be set.
Edit: if you have Cha Cha and/or Kayamba yet, I recommend leaving them at home or setting them to gather instead of fight or something. I've had way too many poisoned bugs get crushed by overzealous helpers just before they dropped dead.

Don't charge up when using the Wroggi bow, or you'll end up destroying the bugs before applying the poison
Later on, i'd recommend putting together a carving set when bug hunting. Two carves makes it a bit more bearable to having to wait for things to die for poison.

Bring a torch and itll attract the little jerks

woo plume flint! this should speed up my barroth farming!
The last time I played an MH on PSP, I didn't much care for it but then the tutorial was really long and slow, and there were so many menus to wade through that I couldn't figure out what to do after a certain point. I'd probably have figured it out but I lost interest. Are the 3DS Monster Hunter games a bit more beginner-friendly or are they still kinda cluttered?

I don't feel like it's that bad. I feel like the controls are a lot tighter in MH3U, too.

Freedom Unite was a weird game. It was basically content from... what, three games? There was almost too much stuff to do. I loved Tri, but for some reason, I never got very far in MHFU.
I'll give it a few months before I try whatever 3DS MH is available. I already have so many 3DS games like Etrian Odyssey and MegaTen that I've barely played.
Less so than those suckers who never got to loot him on psp. Swimming for lyfe!

Ah yes, Monster Hunter, my old addiction. I have shamelessly spent 1800+ hours on MonHun Portable, Portable 2 and 3rd.
If anyone here lives in Melbourne, Australia there is a pretty cool group of fuckers that play 3DU on Thursdays and Saturdays if you ever want to join in. Some Pokemon dudebutts also hang out there for some reason even though they know it is a MonHun group. I might bring a motorbike to a car show one day, just to be a cunt.

Fucking gobul.
Fuck you stupid fish thing. You're a goddamn chore to fight.
But your armor's pretty. Fuck you.
Bullshit fish.

If you grab a frog from a bush near the exit of area 2-->4 you can use it to fish Gobul out of the water so long as it's not seen you yet.
On land it's a way easier fight so you can rack up a tonne of damage before you have to chase it into the water.

What bugs me so bad about the fight is just how goddamn obtuse that monster is. It's like trying to bite the corner off a fucking donut when it comes to avoiding its attacks. I can't wait to have the armor so I can move on to the next set that strikes my fancy

Yeah I'm not a big fan of gobul, although it does look amusingly goofy and I vaguely recall the armour is pretty good, or at least it was in Tri.
What weapon are you using?

MetalbourneInside a cluster b personalityRegistered Userregular
Well gobul is terrible because of the level ,its size and its shitty breakable locations
Luckily its armors blow!

Yeah that's as good a choice as any.
Gobul's got a pretty big head hitbox so it's pretty easy to KO if you aim for it's head. Buuut on the flip side that's where the mouth is.
It's a risk-reward thing I guess; you're safer behind it but you'll get faster kills going for the head.

I can't use them at all, but it is a giant cannon with a sword tied to it which is super cool.
Personally I find them too slow and not very maneouverable, but I'm not very good with the regular lance either so it's probably just me.
It pokes things, it's block things, it can shoot stuff, it combos easily. You might have to sheathe it to actually get anywhere but once you get there you can poke and block away.
Honestly all the weapons in 3U are fairly balanced against one another, there's no real stand-out 'best' weapon type like in the other games. I'd say try and play with whatever you fancy and see what clicks.
What Halos nach Tariff said is why I gave it a 3 it's not bad but it's drawbacks really hamper it when you need something on the fly to save your ass

It was a wildlife genocide in the mega woods today. Stepped out the door and straight into the jaws of a great jaggi. Chased it to its home and killed it, then ran into a qurupeco. Chased it to almost every area on the map and made a goddamn point to murder everything it summoned. Fuck you, qurupeco.

its... really good though
Well, in the water anyway, on the land she's pretty chump-y.
It's an exercise in being cautious really; it's very easy to get comboed and killed.

The flame plume, a hammer lovingly crafted from the finest qurupeco parts.
...I'm seeing a trend here.

Yeah like that's helping with that stupid bee armor

Its a powerful weapon. Its good to learn it early some monsters are so much easier to wound with it
