Jim Caldwell officially hired by Detroit.

He's so boring that I actually fell asleep two times just by typing his name.

    Why would they do that

I think they needed an offensive coach to try and fix Stafford, and apparently Tony Dungy's opinion still carries a lot of weight? I dunno man, you got me.

As a Packers fan, I welcome this hire with open arms.

In Bucs news, they got Frazier as a d-coordinator... they have two pretty good coaches now. Certainly the best they've had since Gruden/Kiffin

this is a discord of mostly PA people interested in fighting games: https://discord.gg/DZWa97d5rz

Not entirely! He also managed to lose the Colts a playoff game by calling a timeout for the opponent!

I've read so many sports sites making fun of the Cam Newton flop. The gifs are hilarious no matter how many times I see it. Between Harbaugh being insane and spinning around on the sideline, Scam Newton doing his best soccer player impression, and Phillip Rivers pouty face this might have been the best week in football this year.

Leading into either a Tawwwmey Brady or Pouty Peyton game this weekend and the Niners vs Seahawks in the Decibel Bowl 2014 should be equally as awesome.

Scam Newton? Is this just because of that one flop, or a series of flops? Or does it go back to his days at Auburn?

either way it would definitely be a great nickname if he turned out to be a huge bust QB.

Scam Newton goes back to the ethical issues he had at Auburn. There are t-shirts and everything.

There has been two in as many games....but I don't recall any before that.

I believe Scam Newton started with Bama fans who thought he was going to bust in the Pro's and was a pretender/ product of the college system.

I actually think he is a good young QB. If I was a Carolina fan I would be a little conerned that he has some quit in him and the two flops here at the end of the season are not the kind of thing you want your franchise player to start being famous for...but there is so much potential and talent there.

Inside of a dog...it's too dark to read.

While it may have been Alabama fans that started it, it had more to do with the ethics problems and possible payoffs to his dad then his athletic abilities.

Cam will be fine as soon as they draft a talented receiver, running back, or tight end to help him. Steve Smith is fine when he's healthy, but he's not nearly the threat he used to be.

I have no idea how they won 12 games with that offense.

It came from the NCAA investigations. Cam was originally declared ineligible when Mississippi State boosters claimed that Cam's dad tried to get a cash payout for Cam to sign on with MSU. After investigation and initial reinstatement, the NCAA couldn't (or chose not to) prove Cam had any knowledge of his dad's attempt to sell him or that Auburn ever paid anything and the case was closed.

Their D is elite and Cam is capable of running like a deer when things go to shit...

Still cant have him doing that forever.

Yeah, the Panthers are in dire need of WR help. I mean when Tedd Ginn is not buried on your depth chart, you may need help.

Supposedly MSU offered 170k for Cam to play there and that Auburn beat that.

Well they have do have Olsen but their backs are overrated as hell and yeah they need a someone opposite of Smith badly. He wasn't even good for a decoy most of the second half.

if newton makes some of the throws he made yesterday - the td to smith, the seam route to olsen - consistently, i'd rather have him than any other young qb in the league

    bugss2.jpg
  • ToxTox I kill threads they/themRegistered User regular
Olsen's good, but when you have Greg Olsen running deep routes, you've got WR troubles that drafting alone won't fix.

Ginn's serviceable, and I don't have a problem with him. He's performed well so far, but Smith is probably past his peak, and we really don't have anybody ready to inherit the #1 position.

Really, though, and I hear and see this all the time watching the games, the biggest issue is that Cam tends not to plant before he throws, making his passes too high in a lot of cases. Like...most of the incompletions are on him for throwing it high, as are a fair number of the interceptions for the same reason.

Also partly correct, the defensive line is insanely good, but the defensive backs have issues. Munnerlyn has been a staple, but between injuries and just general lack of experience, our secondary was weak as shit, and that was demonstrated at least three times this season. The LBs did a lot to cover that up by being so crazy good, but that, like Cam being a good runner, is only going to get you so far. We need better receivers and a better secondary. Honestly, I think those two issues (in that order) are a bigger problem than the running backs right now. Tolbert is reliable, and Williams had good games.

Just...ugh, I think I both Williams and Stewart peaked too early.

We had a very specific plan and profile for our next head coach, and I am convinced that we found that man in Jim Caldwell.
So, guys... what do we want in our head coach?

Well, we need someone that looks like they have no idea where they are at any given point in time.

I don't think Detroit hiring Caldwell is the worst thing.

Like, who's Cleveland going to hire at this point??

Cleveland should run a promotion, where a different season ticket holder gets to coach the team each week.

there must be something else going on behind the scenes, because who would give caldwell another head coaching gig?

i fully realize there are 3 or 4 teams that frequently shoot themselves in the foot like this, but seriously? caldwell?

Considering that the coaching position is being called "toxic", I'd be curious to see who would take it. Schiano? Drew Carey?

He has a few rings. He obviously interviews very well. He's well respected around the league. It doesn't really surprise me.

I still don't think he'll be a good head coach or anything, but it seems like every one of these long time coordinators gets at least two chances at the head job.

I wanted to make a crack about being the new Jim Mora, but I felt that even that might be a little unfair. Because at least Caldwell has seen post season success. Jim Mora Sr was 0-6 in the playoffs. Which is probably why he didn't want to talk about them.

he was the qb coach for flacco's run i guess?

of course then he was promoted to offensive coordinator and baltimore finished 25th in points, 31st in yards/play, 30th in net yards/pass attempt, 32nd in rush yards/attempt and 30th in offensive dvoa

To be fair he took over midseason after they fired their OC and things did get better.
