Kingdom Hearts 2 + FF7 + FFX = WOW! Now with more spell check!
It would seem that some creative people are importing the models from KH2 into the PC version of FF7. The results have been intresting to see.

These are just some examples... The conversion process is time consuming as the models have to be somewhat edited on a low level to be imported correctly.

The cool thing is that the models from KH2, KH1, FFX, FFX-2, and FF12 can also be imported. This means that as soon as the system is streamlined. High-resolution monsters can also be added.
It's not really for public use, actully, it's more of an experiment than anything, so there is nothing to download. Just prettiness to look at..
It's not for download. No one but the guys doing the experiments are even able to play it. To even to get into thier inner circle, you have to have proof of owership of the games and the technical ability for coding the exporter/modeling/coding an importer to even begin.
One thing that really bugged the hell out of me is Tetsuya Nomura completely changed the art style he used for the Final Fantasy series between FF7 and FF8, and it's largely stayed the same since; just more detailed. I was really dissapointed to see the quasi-realistic style seep it's way in to Advent Children, and subsiquently the PS3 "Final Fantasy VII intro" demo, because I really liked the sort of... anime-esque scratchy art style they had in all the promo artwork and stuff, even if it was kind of generic.
Kingdom Hearts kind of brought that back, but a lot more colorful.
Is it just me or does anyone else think it looks like ass? It's great from a technical aspect, but the top picture looks terrible. The character just doesn't fit with the backgrounds. Check out the size of those books though.

All this FF7 retooling stuff is awesome, either as a hobby, or as an entry into the industry, or even 'just cause', but the end result, gameplay wise isn't that special. There are other JRPGs beside FF7...

Yes, as if it were some sort of work in progress. Really, it's more of showing that it can be done rather then it being practical at the moment.

Yes, I'm the one working on Q-gears, that FF7 project.
All of these cool demos are offshoots from the original research we have done with FF7 over the years. One of the reasons why I'm so attracted to this engine is because it's so "typical". Yes, I know that in the engine is pushing 10 years old now, but these is something to be said about the sweet simplicity, yet complex abilities of it. In the U.S. we live in a RPG gaming culture of 1st persons and over the shoulders. What I find really intresting is that the FF7 way of storytelling was taken from the "old school" golden era of Sierra Online adventure games. Somehow, even though I find beauty in Oblivion, the elegance of the FF7 storytelling is intresting to me.
Yes, some of this hacked-out technology is going into Q-gears. In the end the ability to play Squaresoft games are nice, but the ability to allow people to express a story using the very unique 2D/3D JRPG style shows a lot of promise. That's why Q-gears accepts user-made XML data as well as the Squaresoft formats.
Keeping in mind, I dont want to step on toes, so the XML data is *not compatiable* with Square's. You have to use one or the other. Sorry, no scripting a patch to make Aerith fight till the end.
I'm not really thinking of this as an ellitest inner-circle. This is a hobby and we are actually very open. We are also pretty advanced, as we have been hacking this engine for the better part of 7 years. Don't go in thinking we will drop an executable or a zip file for you. Heck, even Q-gears comes out of the box as sourcecode only. The executables on sourceforge are just win32 eyecandy experiments, so that the masses have a toy to play with. The really cool stuff is the code on SVN.
Actually, the really cool stuff is enableing others to use their imaginations and work off the gems of information we provide. That's why Q-gears exists.
Beyond this, if, for some reason, Square doesn't like the color of our shoes and wants us to discontinue the Q-gears project... We will just drop the ability to load the square code, and change the name to something even more odd. The engine will still go on.

I wish Squeenix could take a hint and do a remake already.

So basically this won't be able to be used to make mods?
I can't be the only guy who liked the original FFVII models. As in, the in-game world models. I liked those because they reminded me of SNES-style sprites. I miss that style of artwork.

Total Conversions only. That's the hope. However the source is there so you can do what you want with it.

I did like how they looked, but I was surprised by them at first, because Square had been showing the battle visuals and FMVs almost exclusively, and then everyone found out that in half the game everyone has horse hooves for hands.
As far as a remake goes, I'm hoping Square'll get on it in a couple of years, when the console war has been won by a clear winner that everyone owns, and all these spin-offs and sequels have been wrapped up and forgotten about. I can still, for the moment, quite happily play the original. A remake would have to be crazy special (like, Advent Children level graphics or something) or else all the fanboys would be begging for another one next-next-gen.
What about Red XIII and some of the characters not in Kingdom Hearts? Will you have to make your own models for them, or did they actually all get made in KH2 and I just don't know about it?
FFVII remake would only be interesting if the dialogue got a new translation/rewrite.

It definately would. There's lots of rumours circulating that a FF7 remake for the PS3 is in the works, and there has been ever since they released that tech demo. The game would almost-certainly be reworked from top to bottom, not just given a graphics upgrade. There'd probably be tons of extra content added as well (doubtlessly including new stuff from the more recent FF7 works, like Dirge of Cerberus and Advent Children.)
The cool thing is that this relies on a whole bunch of technologies that is not accessable to the every user. No models to download, but fun to see the process.

So, I approve!
Hey, watch these videos of mine. DO IT.
If so are you planning on using such methods for your project?
Hope this mod will be available for download one day.. ?

Ahahahaha.
And I don't see why, in the future when your project is finished, why someone couldn't release this as a mod.

Those models fit the prerendered backgrounds very well.
I don't have much else to add but yeah. :^:
It's looking really good.
No he didn't, he's talking about "King Don" Hearts. It's coming out this Fall.
