    other delightful nouns of assemblage:

    a bellowing of bullfinches

a skein of ducks (applicable only when in flight)

a brace of mallards (oddly specific to mallards and not ducks in general)

    a piteousness of doves

    a pandemonium of parrots

a lamentation of swans (which seriously sounds like the title of a Jude Deveraux novel)

    a business of ferrets

    a convocation of eagles

    a kettle of hawks

    a skulk of foxes

    an array of hedgehogs

    a cackle of hyenas

    a smack of jellyfish

    a leap of leopards

    a murmuration of starlings

and a partridge in a pear tree

when i lived in Renton, just outside Seattle, there was a big wooded area right behind where we lived and there would be dozens and dozens of crows flying to and from the woods every evening and morning, respectively, and it was always really cool to be outside smoking or whatever and see this big cloud of cawing black shapes wheeling around overhead.

they also seemed very playful, futzing about with each other in mid-air and what not.

The vultures here at work are pretty playful as well. I see them all the time zooming and zipping about on updrafts and shit, then they all get cozy together on top of the reactor buildings at night. I don't know how many of them there are at any given moment, maybe about 50-100?

    Meh, that's boring.

I'd have called it.... A suspense of spiders.

    yeah

most of the poetic names were given to birds

I'm pretty sure that the majority of them were invented by an 18th century monk

just one guy who really liked birds and decided he was going to come up with all these ludicrous nouns of assemblage for them and they've stuck just because they're so whimsical

    there isn't an agreed-upon term

but if we're going to make them up (and why wouldn't we) then we should probably have two--one for if we're talking about more than one bug of the same species, and one for if there are bugs from multiple species (like fish and fishes, respectively)

    I like bounty

    I would also suggest "bevy"

    or "grip"

actually, the 2009 allspark almanac quotes blackarachnia thusly:
"...more dangerous than an exaltation of Autobots."
