[RUST] - If you build it, they will come. And then they will murder you. (New PA Server!)

To do this you will need to overcome struggles such as hunger, thirst and cold. Build a fire. Build a shelter. Kill animals for meat. Protect yourself from other players, and kill them for meat. Create alliances with other players and form a town.
Do whatever it takes to survive.
After many years, the game is finally out of early access! You can read through the thread to see the many adventures of the Rusty Wangs, but now it's all about moving forward. To that end, a few of chipped in to help That_Guy get a PA Community Public server! Thanks @That_Guy, @Yall, @RisenPhoenix, and everyone else who donated!
I'd like to add that being on the PA Vent server is immensely helpful, as people (even us) tend to be paranoid about people making noise outside our buildings. Also, the Rust voice chat is used by folks to (IIRC it uses the Steam settings for voice chat), to warn folks away if they don't shoot you in the face.
Also, the update earlier reset all the permissions on shared doors. I can't get out of my room If someone could share them again with everyone that would probably be helpful

Yeah, good point about Vent. If someone wants to write up a quick tutorial for using vent and the PA Vent server link, I'll definitely add it to the OP. I connected to it the other night for the first time, but I still don't think i was using it correctly.
As for the doors, I think downer has the main doors going into and out of the base, so he'll need to be the main one to go reshare everything. I think the player actually has to be in the server to share with them too, so we'll need to coordinate a time to go in and reshare everything. I'll probably be getting on around 9:30 PM Central tonight and playing for a couple of hours.

Alright, I updated the second post with Steam Group info and started an active players list. I'll try to add you guys I'm aware of to it, but to be sure I don't miss you, PM me a link to your Steam profile and you'll be added for sure.
If you are stuck because of the door sharing please send me a steam chat. iamthepieman is my steam name. I can get you out and destroy any doors and give you replacements for them.
Any recommendations for a good spot to place a 4x8 foundation?
someplace flat? some parts of the coast don't see much action, but unless you are in hacker valley you will get noticed. Not gonna find a spot in the mountains that big. But 6x6 is more secure.
So after re-reading the OP, I realized the map is bigger than I'd previously thought. I think I may put my giant metal base out west of Big Civ, assuming its not irradiated.
huh, i thought this thread had gotten bigger. Did the previous one get closed?
Yeah, sliver didn't seem to be updating the original with info for new players on where everyone was, so I took the initiative of getting a new thread made that I knew I'd keep up to date. A lot of new people will likely be trying this game out in the coming weeks and months and I didn't want everyone to think Sliver's was the only server we were playing on.
Also, everyone don't forget to send me your steam profile link so I can include you in the player list.
Strongly recommend against the Pie in the Sky server. Pieman actively encourages a small group of people (Baconator and two others) to run around shooting people for no reason, and when you point out to him that this is not fun he will insult you.
I wonder about a server where someone in your group argues with Baconator's clique and within 5 minutes he logs in and you suddenly hear c-4 being placed on your house despite having a solid unbroken wall around your base. It's all conjecture, of course, but it certainly seems like there's either an admin abusing his power or some hackers in that group. I'd hesitate to play on the server where that isn't more heavily policed.
Oh, and yes, this is on the Pie in the Sky server.
I don't actively encourage Bacon, but I don't discourage him either. I think he presents a good challenge to everyone else.
Leo, I believe our conversation went something like this:
Leo: Complaining about one of Bacons folks killing him for no reason, saying it wasn't survival to waste resources on killing someone with no gear
Me: Agreeing, saying it was sociopathic
Leo: Saying "My Bandits" were no fun and he was gonna go back to his old server
Me: saying they aren't my bandits and that the game is not Minecraft.
I'm sorry I insulted you. That wasn't my intent by saying this game isn't Minecraft. If you just want to build your base in peace though, a server with PVP turned off is probably a better option for you.
If anyone notices any hacking or suspicious activity on the server please send me a steam chat. I really want this to be a fair server. That's why I spent most of this morning working on new loot changes to make mid tier gear more readily available to new and growing players and clans.
Every weapon can now drop from zombies and C4 is now craftable. You can't craft the explosives used as an ingredient in C4 but they (explosives) drop at about 1.5% from zombies.
I did this to make it so you don't have to win air drops to get C4 anymore. I also reduced the drop rate of C4 from airdrops so people who do dominate those won't get as much.
Uh. Doesn't sound like pie to me, but it's very much a pvp game. Those guys shoot everybody.
I friended Pieman on steam when I started on the server, and he informed me himself that he encourages Baconator and crew to be aggressive because he feels it's "more exciting".
The time we found an airdrop and grabbed the items out of it and someone immediately started shooting at us was exciting. That also made sense. They had just seen us gathering valuable resources they were trying to get, and were going to try to kill us to get them. That is a PVP/Survival combat situation that makes sense. Killing a random player because they happen to be in range of your rifle, are not threatening you, and may or may not have anything valuable on them does not.
I have to agree with Skulldoor. Shortly after I was killed Baconator signed in, and our base, which was in an extremely remote location and had not been discovered until that point, suddenly had someone walking around outside it and we heard C4 being placed on our outer wall right before the server went down. Baconator was also stating in chat that combat logging was a bannable offense (unrelated to me being killed), and that they were working on adding code to prevent it. He also was bragging about how much C4 he had on a server where crafting C4 is disabled and the loot tables skew extremely heavily toward the garbage end of the spectrum. So while I have not been told that Baconator is an admin I strongly suspect he is and that he is giving himself items and teleporting to players who have run ins with his group.
In fact, now that I think of it, he logged in right as I made the comment that I might as well start logging in combat if I'm going to get randomly shot by people, and the person who killed me stated he would "hunt me down at every opportunity" if I did that.
So, pure conjecture, the person who killed me contacted Baconator because I stated I was going to start combat logging, who logged in, teleported to me, and started working on blowing up my base. Of course, Rust doesn't log admin commands so there's no way anyone, even Pieman, could check up on this. Of course, if Baconator isn't an admin, then I have to wonder why he's telling people things are bannable offenses and what changes are going to be made to the server.
My guess, either this post is going to get deleted, though this is my first time on the PA forums and I don't know how often that happens, or Pieman is going to come in here and make completely unprovable statements of Baconator not being an admin, and yet be completely incapable of explaining why he has enough ammunition and C4 with the loot tables the way they are to waste them killing newbies and blowing up bases he's never been to before. Even playing on a server with normal loot tables and no hostile players ammo is scarce and really isn't something you waste shooting people. In addition, it was stated by Baconator et.al. that they patrol the "entire map" "every day" which requires a significant outlay of food if nothing else, and I have to wonder where/how they are getting it.
Of course, most people hear the words "survival game" and translate that instantly into "Kill everything that moves game", forgetting that survival is about not dying, and that expending resources and putting yourself in harm's way when you are not competing for resources, fighting over a mate, defending your territory, or otherwise threatened is a trait with negative survival value. Of course, in the digital realm, it just means that 3 players that could have been a help and definitely weren't a hindrance just left. Perhaps Baconator and Pieman are the kind of people that would rather rule over an empty world than work with anyone else.
That being said, a "survival" game where you just give yourself everything you need to randomly kill people isn't much of a survival game at all. In that case I would recommend they write themselves a little app with a "I win" button on it, and when they click the button it can pop up a message telling them how great they are, instead of paying to host a rust server.
This isn't to say that everyone on Pie in the Sky is like this, but enough people, and the owner, are for me to decide to play somewhere else. In the interests of preventing anyone else from wasting a day or two on this before realizing that there are more than a few fishy things going on here I decided to come post, and asked the other two people I brought to the server to come post their thoughts as well.

Only G&T mods have power to delete posts, so unless you piss one of them off your post isn't going anywhere.
A few other people in chat mentioned that Bacon might be an admin? Is that actually the case?
Hey Leo, I understand you're upset about this stuff I'd love to have you give the server another try. If there's anything I can do to reassure you, please do let me know.
I believe admin commands actually are logged because of the server mod I use and I will check them after I post this.
Couple things I can do right away to assure you that I'm not trying to hide anything or, for some reason, am conspiring against you or new players like you.
So, full disclosure:
Baconator IS an admin. the "admins" on my server do not get rcon access. rcon is the "rust console" which requires a password (set by me) to use. They do get access to a limited number of commands.
These are:
Ban
Kick
Teleport to a player and to preset locations that I can designate (The preset locations have been disabled though because that mod is broken by the latest RUST update)
So, that was true until this afternoon. I gave Bacon the rcon password at around noon EST while he was investigating a potential hacker for me. I did this because the RUST update had just come out and broken most of the mods including the one that I use to control admin access.
But until this afternoon, no one except myself had the ability to spawn any item, go into godmode or do anything except use those three commands above. I use the admin powers liberally to test structures out, play with weapons, test zombie loot drops out etc. I believe everyone who has played on this server will tell you that I don't use them against other players, that I go out of my way to help people and generally encourage teamwork over fighting and killing everything that moves.
In fact, I don't really play the game anymore at all. Most of my time in game is spent monitoring chat, helping new players and doing admin stuff like the loot changes I mentioned in my earlier post.
One more thing for full disclosure. I know Bacon in real life. He's my brother in law and one of my best friends. I was in his wedding this past Summer, he lives 3 hours from me and we get together quite often.
So some things I can tell you about him. He was a hardcore Darkfall player. Darkfall is a full loot PVP only MMO. He's also a very good FPS player and generally kicks my ass at every FPS we play.
It's possible he teleported to your location and raided your homes @Leonasson and @Skulldoor with C4 he spawned in using the admin console. I highly doubt it but I won't say it didn't happen until I check the logs.
I recognize that a few clans are dominating the server, mostly Baconator, hydro2185 and Shankerz. That's why i made it easier to get good loot without getting aridrops. I want there to be good competition. But I want there to be competition. This is not a PVE server.
So, that's everything. I'd love to have you back on the server and hope to see you there.
I have never properly played this or dayZ and yet, I have got hundreds of hours of entertainment reading and watching peoples hilarious/horrifying shenanigans.
I really love these games that test out human social tendencies in video game form.
Me too. I love watching the power struggles.

Well. I have to say, that takes the wind out of my sails a bit.
So I checked the logs. It's a big pain cause RUST throws a ton of errors, or the mods I'm running do. Baconator did not use the teleport command or the give command. If anyone is really interested I can post them somewhere.
For all the complaints against Bacon and his crew, he (and Hydro) seem cool and down to earth. Shankerz on the other hand, seems like a 15 year old jackass. That, however, doesn't make me think they are doing anything untowards on the server.
Also, if anyone has spare metal crafting materials, after talking to most of the people around tonight, I think we're going to move at least some of the operations to the metal building I am constructing behind the wooden base. It's in a pretty good spot where it should be safe from adjacency attacks, as it's nestled within some rock outcroppings and I'm currently building out the foundations to cover any/all open ground. Shoot me a PM on the forums with your in game name and I'll grant you door access next time I'm on.
Honestly, if Baconator and crew were using admin powers, they wouldn't be begging for people to sell them metal fragments. They are starting to have at least some ammo problems, probably due to their penchant for shooting everyone on sight. Thing is, nobody wants to (or trusts them enough to) trade anything. Also, C4 used to drop in stacks of 5 from airdrops, which has now been GREATLY nerfed. Now only the uncraftable components can drop.
There are a couple of crews that are flying under the radar on the server and are close to enough firepower to take them down. Baconator just now started building a metal base as he knows he can't own all the resources since airdrops aren't the only source of C4.
When Slowriot was taken out last night, he could've had assistance from our group. We were watching the action from the mountains with sighted BARs, but decided not to assist due to Slowriot's crew killing us when we gathered resources in that area. Our logic is that Baconator travels around more and we are less likely to get taken out when we do a resource run and pass through Radtown.
Well. I have to say, that takes the wind out of my sails a bit.
I wouldn't be concerned. If there was/is admin abuse, then there is only a matter of time before it becomes rampant and obvious to everyone. A direct path to our group's vault (which only houses our rarest, last ditch stuff and sleeping bags), takes 56 C4. An indirect path could take up to 74++ C4. They were bragging about 40, so if we find all of our doors blown then we know that there was either admin abuse or clever deception.

Edit: Also, I can now craft Explosive Charges.
We're willing to trade our metal foundations for metal fragments, low quality metal, or metal pillars/walls/doors/doorways/windows/window-bars. I am Bobstah in-game, just send me a PM with what you're willing to part with and we'll make a deal.

Sadly I'm in the same boat. I'm up to a half dozen extra foundations and climbing. I wish we could break them down and recycle them into something else.
I spent another day looking for metal foundations to no avail.
It was fun last night though, as the server I've been playing on finally had a reasonable amount of people on, besides myself and the owner.
I wasn't even aware people started joining until I heard a couple of kids talking and getting closer (I'd completely forgotten about prox chat since the server was usually empty). Anyways, they had pants, thankfully, but were otherwise powerless, and generally polite so I helped them out with some food and medical supplies, and shot a few zombies that were chasing them.
A few minutes later one of them comes running down the road toward me, screaming "help help they killed my friend and are trying to kill me!". I asked if he meant players or zed's and he confirmed it was other players.
I was loaded for bear, and went in the direction he came from, sure enough, two guys had shacks and were milling about. I pistol sniped them from about 100 yards and took their guns but left everything else.
They had the audacity to get pissy about it and kept asking why I killed them. I let them know it was for killing the kid I'd been helping. They denied it at first but then laughed it off and admitted they were hunting noobs.
Def. more fun with a small population in the game. Ramps up the tension.
Friend invite sent to Bigity and Big Dookie.
I would love to play with you duders.
I can be shitty bait for your nefarious purposes, gather stupid useless things, etc.

Yeah, after thinking on it a bit I'm alright with it. I agree that I haven't personally seen Bacon or pieman abuse admin privledges, and if they did it would likely be pretty apparent. I do wish we'd known a little earlier on that this was the case, but in the end I don't think it's a huge deal as long as pieman is keeping things on the up-and-up, which every indication has shown that he is.
My only request is that, if you haven't already, please don't give him too much info about this thread or our affiliation with PA since we tend to discuss things within our group here. I know he can google it, but unless he knows we're from PA it'd be pretty unlikely for him to accidentally run across this thread otherwise. Other than that though, I think everything's cool.

If you go to the second floor of the main base, I've got a crate with something like 6 metal walls and 6 metal staircases in it. Don't know if you can use those or not, but their yours if you want them. I found a bunch of explosives last night too on my looting run, like 17 of them or something crazy. I logged out with them just in case, but I'll be happy to share them with you next time I'm on so we can start stockpiling some C4. If you have any spare, it might be good to let us borrow them too so we can research them and then give them back to you. The more stuff we can make, the better off we'll be.
Seems like the PA server is much like the server I joined to try out this "game". Except my server seems to be full of utter psychotics.
I'm all for PVP but this game isn't for me. First night I was ganked repeatedly, and the second (having built a base miles away from anyone else) I was surrounded and verbally abused for over an hour via the in game chat, and also sent abusive steam messages. In over 25 years of video gaming, I've never known a game that promotes downright virtual bullying and such shithead behaviour like this one does.
(All this is despite me clearly stating my intention to be a friendly and approachable player)
I don't get what the big deal is about it. It's just license to be a complete twat in a video game.

Me too. I love watching the power struggles.

Edit: Also, I can now craft Explosive Charges.
Moving on!
