Today is Martin Luther King Jr. day in the United States. Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, GA and was assassinated on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, TN. He was a singular figure who wrote important things, did important things, and said important things:
I remember watching his speech in a history class in my freshman year of high school; a wild pack of shitty teenagers was silent for the entire speech, not even a cough or a sneeze, we were completely transfixed by this powerful presence.
And then it was over too soon and the lights were turned back on; no less than fifteen of the toughest, meanest kids in the class had tears running down their faces. The rest of us were just ... silent ... looking in at ourselves, analyzing our perceptions, our individual histories.
I have never felt that small and weak yet powerful and hopeful, so crushed and lifted all at the same time.

Having lived in the South all my life, and Memphis for a time, I have a few stories to tell including a weird one about how uh....a non racist sheriff 'fought back' against MLK Jr. in Georgia for a time, 'successfully'

The whole deal with the FBI targeting him and trying to silence him and thinking he was going to start another civil war and everything is really hard for me to comprehend. Which, I guess, means that we are in a much better place now, as a society.

Still got a long way to go to get to that mountaintop, sadly. But it has definitely gotten better.
Technically no statue in DC can be taller than 19.5 feet, the height of the Lady Freedom statue. The MLK memorial gets around this by engraving his likeness on the Stone of Hope, the 30 foot tall centerpiece of the memorial. 1964 Independence Avenue is located on one of the nicest sides of the Tidal Basin, and the cherry blossoms bloom close to the date of his death.

Everyone should watch In the Heat of the Night.
It has a pretty frank showing of racism at that time, it's exceptionally well done.
