Damn it, the Olympics are super fucking dedicated to me not being able to watch the opening ceremonies this year. I was convinced they were last week and then sure they were tomorrow.

    Fuuuuck.

Now I need to like, work out if there's a bar here that will be showing them for some reason. Poo butts forever.

The Opening Ceremonies are on Friday starting at 7:30pm EST. Or at least, that's when NBC is broadcasting them.

I was thinking of coming up with a Sochi drinking game revolving around graft and insane homophobia, but that would involve actually watching the opening, and I'm boycotting it. A puzzle.

I was super excited to watch Snowboard Slopestyle, now I'm genuinely concerned that there's going to be serious injuries on the course. They already had a broken collarbone during practice sessions, and Shaun White jammed his wrist and dropped back to only competing in Superpipe.

I really can't bring myself to be excited for these given all the issues they've had...but I did see that they were splitting the hockey off and playing it on MSNBC and USA to be able to show more games. I'll probably at least be sure to catch a few games...I love international hockey.

    Woo! Jamie Anderson!

Ty Walker took a 1, she got banged up during practice and is healing up for the semifinals on Sunday. She wrote about it in her blog - http://tywalkersnow.com/2014/02/05/practice/

Those scores are all over the place, they're really struggling with this course.

I really have no idea why they tape delay things in this day in age
If you wanted to see Curling why not stream it?

And I am rather curious how they got the flame to the International Space Station and back

Doesn't the host country get to decide on a certain number of specific events, even if they're not traditionally winter game events?

If so I hope Putin added Shirtless Bear Wrestling and Ricin Tipped Umbrella Fencing to this thing to spice it up.

Man. Part of me desperately wants to watch the Olympics, because the winter ones were always my favourite and hockey is excellent. But with all the moral issues I have with the way Russia is handling things... Ugh.

International Hockey is my favorite. That being said, I am terrified that one of my Boston Bruins is going to get hurt or blown up or have to poop in a toilet that can't accept toilet paper.

Is this really happening? Did the deputy prime minister in charge of Olympic preparations really just admit they had surveillance in hotel bathrooms?

I would love to see a video or something about the ski mountains they are using. I have heard nothing about them other than other than the graft issues at the mountain bases. How are the hills?

Everyone should watch lilyhamer on netflix, I want to go see that place, can't say I want to go to Sochi.

Not a chance in hell, but I figured a fair amount of the people who would regularly take two weeks off and fly to watch the olympics would
If true, I doubt putin would learn a lesson from this

This plus the next two World Cup locations is just a cornucopia of bad decisions in design. Dear me. BC had the best buildings and they all got reused in one way or another.

The big controversy over the last several months leading up to the games has been Russia's anti-gay laws and fears that homosexual athletes and visitors would be harassed or even jailed while in the country. But that's all been smoothed over, right?

Well, while Russian president/Legion of Doom member Vladimir Putin is trying to downplay that whole "Russia is super homophobic" thing with the tried and true "But I have gay friends!" defense, the mayor of the city where the games are being held had another strategy. Sochi can't be homophobic, he says, because no gays exist there. Homosexual impulses have been magically vanished from the entire 340,000-inhabitant city, because they're "not accepted here" and "we do not have them." Never mind the fact that there are actually a few gay clubs in Sochi.

Meanwhile, Putin has reassured gay visitors that they'll be fine as long as they "leave children alone." See? The government isn't anti-gay, they just think all homosexuals are paedophiles.

yeah, i was pretty disappointed in the IOC for giving Russia the games.

i am, however, still going to watch.

because curling. and hockey. and the luge. basically i love the winter olympics.

    Jesus freaking christ.

And lets not forget that the author of that horrible anti-gay bill has stated repeatedly that any one gay at the Olympics will be arrested, even after being told what Putin's been saying.

God, I hope this turns into the shitstorm it needs to be.

Following up on Noisymunk's post, Russian Deputy Prime Minister in charge of the games:

"“We have surveillance video from the hotels that shows people turn on the shower, direct the nozzle at the wall and then leave the room for the whole day,” he said. An aide then pulled a reporter away before Mr. Kozak could be questioned further on surveillance in hotel rooms. “We’re doing a tour of the media center,” the aide said."

Also with the right cable subscription you can stream pretty much everything.
