THink I fried my PC...

Disco11Disco11 Registered User regular
So after a long night of DOTA I went to turn my PC off from the power button and I must have build up a bit of a static charge as I jolted it a bit. My rig then decided to reboot and will now not POST. The fans spin up and the DVD tray will open/close if you hit the button but there are no activity lights and the Keyboard & monitors stay dead. Any ideas how to fix/resolve/diagnose what parts I will need to look at?

Does anything appear on the monitor? Do you have your speakers plugged in, and do they make sounds? Does it beep when you first press the power button?
My thoughts are video card, and it's not displaying anything; or it's the mobo.

Monitor does not turn on and the speakers make no sound. No beeps at all.

If I take out my video card to test to see if it's that component will the computer switch to the on board one by default? Would I need to take it out or just unplug the power going to it?

Hrmm, If there is power to the fans and you hear the IDE drives spin up, I'm fearing you may have killed your mother board. if you are lucky you may have only damaged part of your power supply. Do you have another computer available to test this out on?

I think I have a spare motherboard kicking about. Dead motherboard is kind of what I was thinking. Would it have got all the way to the processor?

It's always possible since static is a fickle bitch, but in my experience CPUs are surprisingly durable unless you screw up handing it directly or clamping down the heat sink, and will usually survive the motherboard dying around them.

If you fried your motherboard due to a static charge, most likely you blew up the capacitors. Which you can check by looking if the metal tops are bulging (bad). or if its still flat (good).

My motherboard is still under warranty so going to be sending it in and see what they say. Thanks everyone for the advice!

Another recommendation to flash the cmos/bios on the mobo.

Tried flashing it and removing the battery. No go.
