Cell phone games. Do you like them? Do you play them? Is there even a point to them?
I've always had mixed feelings about the cell phone as a video game system. The D-pad is too mushy for serious play, and the games themselves always seem compromised in seemingly unnecessary ways. I just downloaded Bubble Bobble on a whim last night, and was shocked by everything that was left out of this port of a twenty year old arcade game. You only earn one kind of fruit prize from popping clusters of bubbles, only three empty bubbles can be on the screen at one time, secret bonuses that were in other versions of the game aren't here, etc. etc. The whole thing just feels perfunctory, as if the developers said, "Yeah, that's as close to Bubble Bobble as a cell phone game needs to be. Now let's close up early and drop a few sake bombs at the local bar."
There are a few worthwhile cell phone games out there... for instance, Super K.O. Boxing reproduces the unique appeal of Mike Tyson's Punch Out!! better than any other handheld boxing game out there (with the possible exception of Wade Hixton's Counter Punch). Nevertheless, most of what's available on cell phones just seems so forced and technologically stunted. When the latest cell phone games are getting pee-owned by five year old Game Boy Advance titles, you know there's something wrong.
Will cell phones ever become a viable medium for video games? Or will manufacturers like Nokia and developers like Jamdat and Gameloft continue to make the same mistakes they had in the past, ensuring that cell phone games remain little more than digital bling to show off to your friends?

Also, Orcs and Elves and DOOM are both really fantastic.
So yeah, I pretty much hate every single aspect of cell phone games that it's possible to hate.
We don't get shit like that in Canada.

I just checked and apparently Tornado Mania showed up on Verizon after all. I downloaded it and will tinker with it later and update with impressions. IGN liked it and I know it made Gamespot's GOTY 2006 for mobile/handset devices although I can't seem to find a link to the actual review. (they completely removed all of their mobile-related stuff it seems)
I had a lot of fun with DOOM RPG. It captures the feel of DOOM, and works in incriments of a few minutes. Best of all you can buy it outright instead of paying a shitty monthly ripoff fee.
I always wanted to play Bonk's Return, but Sprint doesn't carry it, god damn it.

Yeah, but expectations are so low that they can produce really shitty graphics and gameplay and people will see it as average. The bar is so low that it seems like a good place for a developer to make a name for itself with a really sensational game. They need something that will get everyone's attention and create a minor stir.

If you enjoy DOOM RPG, definitely look into Orcs and Elves - it's the spiritual "sequel" to DOOM RPG made by none other than John Carmack and it's got a few nice changes (and it's got a lot more humor).
I enjoyed it enough to finish it. I guess maybe I just like the style of gameplay - the turn-based FPS thing is pretty awesome.
