Cell phone games

Cell phone games. Do you like them? Do you play them? Is there even a point to them?

I've always had mixed feelings about the cell phone as a video game system. The D-pad is too mushy for serious play, and the games themselves always seem compromised in seemingly unnecessary ways. I just downloaded Bubble Bobble on a whim last night, and was shocked by everything that was left out of this port of a twenty year old arcade game. You only earn one kind of fruit prize from popping clusters of bubbles, only three empty bubbles can be on the screen at one time, secret bonuses that were in other versions of the game aren't here, etc. etc. The whole thing just feels perfunctory, as if the developers said, "Yeah, that's as close to Bubble Bobble as a cell phone game needs to be. Now let's close up early and drop a few sake bombs at the local bar."

There are a few worthwhile cell phone games out there... for instance, Super K.O. Boxing reproduces the unique appeal of Mike Tyson's Punch Out!! better than any other handheld boxing game out there (with the possible exception of Wade Hixton's Counter Punch). Nevertheless, most of what's available on cell phones just seems so forced and technologically stunted. When the latest cell phone games are getting pee-owned by five year old Game Boy Advance titles, you know there's something wrong.

Will cell phones ever become a viable medium for video games? Or will manufacturers like Nokia and developers like Jamdat and Gameloft continue to make the same mistakes they had in the past, ensuring that cell phone games remain little more than digital bling to show off to your friends?

The only reason I haven’t played cell phone games recently, is that Cingular charges a monthly fee to play them rather than a one time “buy” fee. To me, that is just absurd. I may be looking in the wrong places, but $1.99 a month for bejeweled is just asinine.

Is the cell phone KH game worth playing? That's the only game I've ever considered getting.

I play Lumines Mobile on my Verizon Razr. It's a great port with leaderboards and all kinds of great features. The controls are solid, with the only flaw being your keyboard on your given cellphone (the Razr isn't the best, but definitely functional).

Also, Orcs and Elves and DOOM are both really fantastic.

I've yet to find a cell phone game I actually enjoy playing. Developing for them sucks, too. Imagine making games for a wide range of really shitty PCs where you also had to worry about not only screen resolutions, but screen aspect ratios. It's a fucking bitch, and coming up with a control scheme that doesn't blow is pretty futile.

So yeah, I pretty much hate every single aspect of cell phone games that it's possible to hate.

I submitted an entry to Lego Ideas, and if 10,000 people support me, it'll be turned into an actual Lego set!If you'd like to see and support my submission, follow this link.

I've always been insanely curious about the Elder Scrolls mobile games.

We don't get shit like that in Canada.

I'll admit, most of the crap out there is pretty worthless. But there are some real gems. I really with Verizon would put Tornado Mania on their service.

As LCDXX mentioned, Doom is pretty fun, and it's easy to play for a few minutes at a time. The controls aren't too fiddly, and it plays far better than a turn-based RPGish version of an FPS has any right to. Not as good as the roguelike, though.

I just checked and apparently Tornado Mania showed up on Verizon after all. I downloaded it and will tinker with it later and update with impressions. IGN liked it and I know it made Gamespot's GOTY 2006 for mobile/handset devices although I can't seem to find a link to the actual review. (they completely removed all of their mobile-related stuff it seems)

I had a lot of fun with DOOM RPG. It captures the feel of DOOM, and works in incriments of a few minutes. Best of all you can buy it outright instead of paying a shitty monthly ripoff fee.

I always wanted to play Bonk's Return, but Sprint doesn't carry it, god damn it.

Yeah, but expectations are so low that they can produce really shitty graphics and gameplay and people will see it as average. The bar is so low that it seems like a good place for a developer to make a name for itself with a really sensational game. They need something that will get everyone's attention and create a minor stir.

If you enjoy DOOM RPG, definitely look into Orcs and Elves - it's the spiritual "sequel" to DOOM RPG made by none other than John Carmack and it's got a few nice changes (and it's got a lot more humor).

I just couldn't get into Orcs and Elves. I really, really regret that purchase.

I enjoyed it enough to finish it. I guess maybe I just like the style of gameplay - the turn-based FPS thing is pretty awesome.

I don't have any specific quarrel with the game-it's perfectly decent. It just never made that hard-to-describe click with me.

I played through most of Sam and Max on my phone. Now there's a great time waster if you have a minute or two.
