There was no reason the characters had to be children, I think the guy responsible for the show is creepy. You can argue the artistic merit all day but it's not going to make me start watching the various animes of that variety

What Cinders was pointing out is lots of animes do this. There's no single offender. How many times has a teenage guy tripped over something only to land face first into an underage girl's breasts? Then the girl gets mad and bashes him over the head but the point is it happens often. It's a culture thing. It's a Japanese thing.

The characters needed to be children because they wanted a fucked up coming of age story. The story was always shinji and how he grows up, and not the end of the world or robots. Thats why the tv series ends with
To be clear, it wasn't on, or even over, in fact I think he basically runs to the bathroom.
It's all fucked for sure, and the movies actually move to fix some of it, but they neglect others, and I think its for "accuracy". There's no real good reason why all the children male and female have to go through a chamber to get cleaned at the same time for the clean room environment ahead, besides "we have to have this allegory here".
He did get help with his emotional issues after Eva. He's in a happy place now, that's why the reboot is less cynical.
