dual monitor support

I have 2 nvidia 6800gts running in sli - how do I make them recognize a second monitor? The second monitor syncs with the first and displays an identical image when the computer is booting, but on the XP(SP2) login screen, the second one goes back to a 'no signal' message. The second monitor isn't being detected by windows or the nvidia config app Nview. The monitors are both plugged into the dual dvi ports on the 'top' card.
(I tried this in the computer thread, but it's been 24 hours so I'm hoping it does better out here)
I did try moving the second monitor to the other ports with no luck.
practical testing also rules out issues with either monitor - they both work.
Unless Nvidia changed something recently, you can't do SLI and multiple monitors at the same time.
What you would probably want to do is un-SLI them, and use each one to drive one monitor. I would think that would be the same performance wise as having two cards drawing every other line on two monitors anyway.

Also, I came across this message about an annoyance (bug in some nVidia drivers) when you un-SLI them. I thought it might save you some trouble looking it up if you happen to run into it:
