Google Play syncing contacts

tarnoktarnok Registered User regular
I thought about putting this in the games and tech forum but decided it was more helpy than techy.

I got my first smart phone, a kyocera rise with virgin mobile. The problem is that every time I log into google play to download an app the phone decides I want to sync my contacts from gmail which I emphatically do not want to do.

I went through my contacts list and deleted everything that it imported from gmail. When I went to send a text message though the contacts were clearly still in there and showed up as autocomplete options. So then I removed the profile entirely and it also removed all the actual phone numbers which I _do_ want that I had painstakingly typed in earlier.

Telling it not to sync in the profile options in settings does nothing because it syncs them as soon as I log into google play and when I turn off the sync option it still has all those fucking email addresses.

Is there any way at all to use google play without my phone importing all of this crap I don't even want it to know exists?

Great. Now I find that all my phone numbers have also been imported into my gmail contacts and my device has been registered with the account and there is no way to delete it. Beautiful. I want my fucking grey-scale nokia back.

Hmmm I guess I would have suggested a totally new google account. It's probably not too late for that if you want to delete everything.

Or, you could just kinda of accept it and use it as google intended (which actually works quite nicely).

The problem with that is that I don't want the convenience of having all of my information in one place; I want it rigidly compartmentalized, I want to have to put in a password every time I look at my email, and I don't even want the programs I use to know that I use other programs.

I have made a new google account which doesn't quite solve all my problems with the system but at least makes them more manageable.

It sounds to me like you bought a Google phone, but don't want it to do the Google stuff.

I suggest returning it and getting a non google phone.

Sounds like you want to leave everything behing and live in the woods before SkyGoogleNet takes over everything. I know I hate it when Google add my gmail things to my contacts since I really dont email people much. On my phone, I can set it so only phone numbers appear in my contact settings. SkyNet still knows your info and still technicality still has the email shit in your contacts but you won't see them.

    Kind of off topic, but...

And now that Google owns Boston Dynamics, it's not even that far from fantasty. The future turned out weeeeird.

    Mimetic poly-alloys anyone?

On topic: There is a setting you can use in Android's account manager to disable syncing, but AFAIK you have to toggle it before you enter your gmail login details into the phone.
You might just have to go toggle it now and go through your gmail contacts one by one and delete the ones that were erronously synced.

Or just throw the phone in a deep lake, and go live in the woods.

This is what phones do now, it's a good thing.

I guess you could wipe the phone, set up a junk GMail account and activate the phone on that account? Just use Gmail through the browser? Don't remember if they still let you do that our just redirect to the app.

Could copy the contacts you want from your primary to the junk; I guess just the phone numbets,.

I've had the same problem, where gmail decides that like 500 e-mail addresses from shit like potential renters who e-mailed me from craigslist should now be in my contacts when I try to call someone. How do you purge the contact list down to something useful?

What is this I don't even.

Could 'star' all the good ones, or use Circles to filter them. Would want to do all that on a PC of course then have it update to your phone.
