I have been out of the comic scene for a while now, but I finally am at a place where I will have the time and funds to jump back in.
I am looking for suggestions on where to start. I am not your typical superhero fan. I like comics that have an edge and illicit emotion while focusing on the art. A few of my favorites growing up were ones that most people hated. I really enjoyed the Batman series A Death in the Family. I also enjoyed the series of comics about Superman coming back from the dead. I actually enjoyed the death of Superman, but I really felt like the books dedicated to him coming back were really well done (not the stupid comics that had a bunch of imposters pretending to be Superman). I was a fan of Maxx (mostly for the art) and I am a huge fan of anything drawn by Jim Lee.
With all that in mind... anyone have any suggestions on where I should start? I stopped by a couple of comic stores the other day, but found myself completely lost and couldn't figure out which comics I could just jump into and get the jest and which ones I needed to read from issue one. I did pick up TWD compilation, but I am not finding it as rewarding as others.

But before that gets all up in your list, I'm gonna sneak Locke and Key at the top of your list. Definitely has an edge, and is one of the best stories I've read in a long long time.
Just isn't part of the big 2, is a self contained indy with a set ending.
