The new Samsung monitor questions

Alright, I currently have this viewsonic crt that I have had for more then 8+ years and I think it's about time I retire the thing. Anyways, I was looking around and I think I found a good monitor.

http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10084230&catid=

I know it's high from Futureshop and I'll be ordering one online. But how is this monitor?

-I play games on the thing. Have a geforce 7800gt. Games are mostly FPS and I have windows xp.
-Don't watch many movies on it but might change this if watching it on the picture is astounding.
-I don't have photographs that I look at so I don't really care about that.

But I have a few questions.

1. Is widescreen good for a computer monitor? For games I'm assuming yes, but what about just browsing the internet or typing up documents? Does everything stretch ok or am I going to see black bars on the sides?

2. The forums say that overwhelming the response has been good. But there are some people who say there is "bleeding" on the top and bottom of the monitors. I think that's when light comes out or something. Do you think that these people are nitpicking?

3. The specs say that this has a contrast ratio of 3000:1. I haven't seen many of these. You think it's horseshit? Anyone have one of these monitors and can comment?

So what do you guys think? It doesn't have components at the bottom in which to plug stuff in but I'm not sure if I really need that.

Perhaps there is another monitor out there that everyone raves about? Thanks for the help guys.

The video card will drive the monitor at its native resolution, so there will be no stretching. Just more pixels.

LCD panels work by obscuring a very bright set of fluorescent lights with a liquid crystal display. If the monitor was not built correctly, there might be light escaping from the edges of the display liquid crystal panel, or from cracks where the case joins up to the liquid crystal panel. However, that would be a pretty serious defect and I have a hard time imagining that many of those would make it out of QC. I've never seen that problem in a new LCD monitor.

The contrast of an LCD will never be perfect, since the LCD tuned to black will never obscure all of the light and the LCD tuned to transparent will never pass all the light. However, contrast has been getting better and better, and it's awfully good in modern LCDs.

Some computer monitors have a USB hub or extra audio jacks.

They are nitpicking. The bleeding is only visible on a full-screen black image. If anything else is on the screen, it isn't noticable, especially if you turn the monitor's brightness down. The monitor's default brightness is really, really bright. Eye-strainingly bright. When I got mine, the first thing I did was turn the brightness down.

I have one of these monitors and would recommend it, but not at that price. That seems pretty high, even for socialist Canadian dollars.

Ok, cool, thanks. Yeah, there's the same monitor at Tigerdirect for $299. I couldn't believe it.

Well I don't know about your budget but if you're buying an LCD screen and have the money, might as well shell out a few hundred more for an HDTV. I use mine as my computer monitor and TV. This is what I have:

I love it. Only gripe is the contrast, I can't imagine playing Doom 3 on a Samsung LCD. Dark. Also you can't go wrong with buying it at Future Shop, I'm a pretty loyal cutomer I guess I buy all my electronics there, they have great customer service and in store warranties.

720p - 1280x720 resolution is to small for my taste. Its even less than my 19'' TFT (1280x1024) can do. I wouldn't recommend a HDTV as replacement for a monitor. (Smaller, more blown-up res; a TV tuner which just adds to the price).

If you want several inputs go for the Samsung SyncMaster 215TW - 21 TFT. (VGA, composite, component, DVI, HDMI + several audio ins) - or wait for the successor. Its nice to have a screen and switch through several devices without the need of an KVM.

    Here's a 22 Samsung at 100$ less.

I use dual Samsung Monitors. Other than having my retina's slowly burned out of my eyes, they're great.

I have the monitor and question, and I like it very much. The jump in sharpness from a CRT is quite nice.

A couple of things to note -

The native resolution of this monitor is 1650x1080, so your games will look very sharp at that resolution and a bit blurry at other resolutions. That's a lot of pixels to push; you have a good video card, but someone with a crappy card might have trouble running their games at such a high resolution.

Older games don't always support widescreen properly. On my box, I had to do some registry tweaks to get Morrowind to display correctly. Diablo II always renders at a max of 800x600 fullscreen, so it comes out stretched on my monitor.

This monitor has DVI and VGA ports - I have my PC hooked up to the DVI, and am planning on getting an XBOX 360 and running it to the VGA.
