Nintendo WiFi Connection ending May 20 (Games are affected, stores are not)

edited February 2014 in Games and Technology

Edit 2: List of "Affected Games" for all systems can be found here. It's a pretty big list.

Straight from Japan: http://www.nintendo.co.jp/support/information/2014/0227.html

...and Australia. http://www.nintendo.com.au/termination-of-nintendo-wi-fi-connection

I imagine it's only a matter of time before the rest of the world confirms it in different regions.

It'll be quicker to stay what is NOT affected, so here's the real meat of the message.
Australia wrote:
Unaffected services

The following services are not affected by the termination, and will continue to be available after May 20th:

Internet Channel
Nintendo DS Browser
Nintendo DSi Browser
Nintendo DSi Shop
Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Pay & Play
Wii Shop Channel
YouTube

Wii U and Nintendo 3DS games will not be affected but it will not be possible to use online features of Wii software played in Wii Mode on Wii U, and of Nintendo DS games played on Nintendo 3DS family systems.

Edit: And now, America.

Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service for Nintendo DS and Wii to end in May

2014-02-26

As of May 20, 2014, certain online functionality offered through Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection will no longer be accessible. The discontinued services include online play, matchmaking and leaderboards for many Wii, Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi games. For a comprehensive list of games and services that are affected, please check http://support.nintendo.com/servicesupdate. Users can still play the games in offline mode, which continues to offer a rich game-play experience.

Online play for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS games will be unaffected (aside from the Wii mode on Wii U and Nintendo DS games on Nintendo 3DS family systems). Other online functionality, such as access to the Wii Shop Channel, the Nintendo DSi Shop and video-on-demand services, are also not affected at this time.

We at Nintendo sincerely thank our fans for their continued support of our company’s legacy systems. Your enthusiasm for games made for these systems speaks to their longevity, and the passion of Nintendo fans.

It looks like Monster Hunter Tri is NOT on the list.

Very sad. But if you want to purchase DLC for a game like Mega Man 10 or 100 Classic Books, can you still get it? Or does that not count, since it's not technically in the shops?

I guess what I'm saying is: Is it now or never for DLC (what little there is), and if it is, does anyone know which games have it?

I think DLC is covered under Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Pay & Play which isn't ending.

I didn't think about MM9 or 10...dammit I really should pick that DLC.

Dragon Quest IX's free DLC "downloads" won't be available after the shutdown. Mega Man 9 & 10 is weird, it's listed in that huge list of games affected but I don't get why you won't be able to purchase the DLC if the shops are still staying up.

Also Monster Hunter Tri on Wii has been offline for a while now right around when the Wii U version released. I think Capcom themselves handles online for Monster Hunter.

Man, that list makes me a bit sad. The Wii really did have a solid library. There's TONS of games there that I haven't played yet.

So after this goes down, you won't be able to trade in Pokemon games via the internets?

I mean, granted, I could never get it to work anyway, but...

    Oh brilliant

Technically you can transfer pokemon up to Gen 5 games and transfer them to Gen 6 games and trade them online that way.

This year the Wii turns eight and the DS turns ten. It's not like they were going to keep them up forever, and other companies regularly shut down their online infrastructure for aging hardware/software too.

The only difference here is that the Wii is shutting down much earlier than its contemporaries, but that's because the Wii had shitty online that might as well have no users when compared to the 360 and PS3.

This is a reminder that this is the last weekend you'll be able to smack someone across the world with a koopa shell or a banana peel while driving on a rainbow in space is glorious 2D SD, among the many other things you were able to do online with a Wii and DS.

(And if anyone ever bought a WiiWare game called "Overturn", or still plays CoD:WaW, I'd love to swap friend codes to have a chance to try that out while I can.)

From what I understand, the extra quests are technically in the game, but the only reason you would have to connect is to receive an unlock code-like thing from Nintendo. Something you can get from Action Replay (if you want to go that route after the shutdown)

Did anyone get in any last minute matches of their favorite games?

I was able to do a little bit of CoD:WaW, battle mode on Mario Kart (since I didn't play that part of it much), and a couple of really stupid matches of Brawl.

    And I mean STUPID.

Stupid as in me not being in on the joke that if one person attacks another, it becomes an all-vs.-attacker match.

At least there was no lag.......at first. Eventually, it just chugged and everyone moved about as quickly as a Pokemon match in terms of command input -> movement. I wonder if that was also somehow intentional by those I played against, because despite the handicap and mounting losses, I still wasn't giving up.
