Guess what arrives to PS2 and PC next month?
(The PAL boxart is the same as the NTSC territories)
The Short Story: This is a remake of the original Tomb Raider, retooled with the Tomb Raider Legend engine. OH HELLS YEA.
The Long Story (courtesy IGN):
Instead of creating a new chapter in Lara's storied history, Tomb Raider: Anniversary is a retelling of the original adventure that introduced her to gamers so many years ago. Lara is contracted by Jacqueline Natla to help her find the Scion of Atlantis, an ancient relic. To give her a head start on the piece, Natla points her in the direction of a lost city in Peru, which kicks off her journey. While the game follows the essential plot points of the classic title, with many of the key moments from the title being transferred over, this is a revisit of the original tale with a number of departures. Many of the puzzle and exploration elements take a completely different direction, with a much larger sense of scale and depth to the environments and puzzles that you'll explore from location to location. As a result, fans of the series that have played and probably memorized the various ways through each crypt or antechamber will probably be stumped by some of the new twists, turns and routes deliberately placed in each area.
The changes to the level layout isn't the only change that's been made to Tomb Raider: Anniversary. Lara is a lot more agile now than she was a decade ago, with new tumbling sequences that she can use to evade attacking enemies. In fact, while we were playing our way through the Peru level, we noticed that threats like wolves and bears could be enticed to charge our way. Depending on how well you time the charge, you can trigger a dodge move which gives you a free shot at the beast, causing extra damage. Combat moves aside, Lara's newfound nimbleness will come into play in a number of ways. For instance, she'll traverse gaps by leaping across the tops of poles or columns, which she can also shimmy up or down to reach new areas. Finally, Lara's grappling hook, which made a significant contribution to the gameplay in Tomb Raider: Legend, makes a return in Anniversary, letting her grab onto hooks and other items to swing from one area to another. This can help her gather up the various artifacts, relics and puzzle items scattered around each level.
Even better, Tomb Raider: Anniversary will come with a large number of options for fans to enjoy. Players will have three different difficulty levels to choose from to test their skills, and can be displayed in widescreen and progressive scan during play. What's more, there are nine separate extra categories that players will acquire over the course of the adventure, including new costumes for Lara to wear, character biographies, cheats and art galleries. We'll have more on Tomb Raider: Anniversary soon, but for now, check out these new movies of Lara in action as she explores the caves and lost city of Vilcabamba.
And now for some screenies!
(This tomb will be your grave!)
Check out the latest trailer for the game over at Gametrailers. I have to say it is looking mighty fine, and the combat is looking good too. I was a bit worried about how the Lara vs. Creatures combat would turn out, but it looks to be quite fun! Also, mad props to Eidos and Crystal Dynamics for going with fully orchestrated tunes. I hope we get some of that in the final game.
So...
Who else is psyched? I am fucking psyched.
The only complaint I have is... why isn't this coming out on the 360? Oh well. Yet another last hurrah for the PS2.

Fun.

You sir are in for a treat. Damn fine game.
I don't know if snubbed is really the right word. Even nintendo conceded a while ago that the GC was finished. That's why they moved any sort of "last hurrah" games like paper mario to the wii entirely.
I doubt it would have sold anywhere near as well if it was called "Grave Robber".
I had hoped Tomb Raider Legend would have been moved from GC to Wii, personally. Really the Wii remote + nunchuck would be perfect for this game. Run with the analog stick, point and shoot with the remote.
No. Tomb Raider Legend hit GC after the Wii launch, I do believe.
Oh, well. I guess I can get it on the PS2. (When I finish Legend...)
From the OP: Guess what arrives to PS2 and PC next month?
Super Mario Galaxy?
I think the universe would implode.
I'm in the same boat, only I won't be purchasing the PS2 version. Legend was a fantastic game and if this is more of the same I would love to play it but only with achievement points.

Tomb Raider 8 is currently in development for 360, so it's not a total loss for the xboxen.
Well, the PC version will do it then.
fixed for sad, but true...
You bet. It was one of the first 3D platformers way back in 1996.

I would get it if it was on the Wii, even without point and shoot mechanics. Shit, just port it over and bump up the graphics a bit and we're in businness. Just don't let Ubisoft near it.

None of the following games managed to replicate this. Legends was good, I'll concede, but I still think the level design was pretty bad at times. But combining that engine with TR 1 was a stroke of genius, so I'll definitely get this.
Well, thats a shame, I would have got it for Xbox/Wii.
I agree wholeheartedly.

If only all of the animals didn't look like they were made up of cardboard boxes...

I'm torn though.
I loved the old tomb raider games, but I sucked at them. Never beat a single one. When Legends came out, with the control scheme revamp, I fell in love with the game. It was glorious.
However... I've been trying to make it a point of letting my PS2 go to rest. It has been acting wierd for the past 5 months or so. So I try not to use it very much. Because of this, I haven't been letting myself purchase PS2 games. Namely God of War 2, and Guitar Hero II.
Odd enough... this game might break me...

I really hope so. It really didn't make a whole lot of sense to me that they were making a "Games for Windows" version but not a 360 version.
BTW, the Games for Windows version is supposed to have a fuckton of bonus content.
Also also, I hadn't noticed the boxart (which is super sexy) wasn't displaying correctly in the OP, I fixed it.
I hate to admit it, but you're right.
