Cannot run 2 stick of ram at the same time?

My motherboard is asus P5RD2-VM. It has a SAMSUNG DDR2 PC667 in it when i purchased it. I bought a Crucial Rendition 1GB PC2-5300 DDR2-667 240PIN DIMM from NCIX. And when I install, my windowXP does not boot. It says it is missing a config file and it says that i can recover that file if i put in my original window CD and press 'R' when the start screen shows up. I did that and it still does not work. It just keeps on rebooting and rebooting, but it does not boot to window. I have search on the asus site and google, and I can't seem to find a solution to this problem.

Edit: I have ran both stick individually and i tried it on both sockets, and it works.

Sounds like maybe its a bad stick of ram that you got. Try to boot with only the new ram and see if you have the same problem.

Are they both the same size? Or is one smaller than the other? How many memory slots do you have? If you have four slots, try alternating - 1st slot in, second empty, 3rd, fourth empty.

I have 2 slot and i have rotated already. And one is smaller than the other. The 1 GB one is smaller than the 512 one.

My laptop behaves similarly if I populate both of its DIMM slots. Apparently it's a hardware issue that crops up frequently in the model I have. Maybe your motherboard is experiencing a similar problem? Do you have a friend who can try the same RAM in their PC?

Umm...I can try it on my cousin's computer.

    I had this problem before.

Some rams aren't compatible with each other. For what reasons? I'm unsure.
I have no clue if that helps, but that's all I know. I had a brand of RAM (i think it starts with M) .. I can't remember the name, but it just wouldn't work with any other RAM brands. I'm sure there are more technical reasons, but I didn't really get into that. I just returned the RAM and bought a different brand and it worked.

In the oldschool, ram had to be the same size, make and model. I think they found a way around size, (I believe most RAM is now 'paired up' with itself) but make and model go a long way in fixing teh unexplainable weirdness.

They might be different speeds, and the faster stick of RAM can't or the motherboard does not tell the faster RAM to clock itself down.

If it is in fact a problem with the mobo, you're just gonna have to return that stick and buy one big stick.

Does your motherboard support dual channel ram? If so, you might need to disable it in the bios in order for two different sized sticks to function together.

I've had similar RAM issues. Different sizes/brands don't always play well together, for reasons nobody knows.

Best bet, return the Crucial RAM and buy some from Samsung, or try to sell the Samsung RAM on ebay or something, and but more Crucial memory.
