Finding a new place

ZythonZython Registered User regular
I'll keep it short. So I got some bad news today, in that my landlord informed me and my roommate that we would need to leave the house we're renting by the end of April. Now, I would prefer to continue to live with him, but he wants to continue living in a house, rather than an apartment, which I'm OK with. Only problem is that I have no clue about how to go about finding a house to rent.* So does anyone have any advice on how to find a new place that's right for us?

*I found the place I'm in through word of mouth and luck, so I can't 100% rely on that again.

Craigslist & Padmapper (which searches Craigslist but puts it into a handy dandy map for visualization purposes).

Do not, I repeat, do not give anything to anybody you have not met in person and has taken you into the house/apartment/complex you want to rent. A common scam is to have people "drive by" the house and then send the "landlord" authorization for a credit check before they are allowed to see the property, which leads to identity theft.

As for leaving, check your lease/contract, and make sure you know how much you are getting back and what your landlord expects you to do before you leave.

The website of your local newspaper probably has a rental section that may list rental houses.

Zillow is a great site that allows you to search for all rentals in an area via a google maps-like page, listing the costs and contact info for free. It's how I found my current place.

Also is usually a bit more reliable than classifieds on craigslist as the person has to pay and prove ownership of the property to post a listing.

You could also just call or walk into a real estate agency and have them find you places based on whatever criteria you're looking for.
