After talking to my counselor, I think a lot of my recent complaining is because of trust issues and not being good at letting go. I'm still learning the feel of the place, after all, and I came from an environment where I couldn't trust anyone but myself. Now, I'm surrounded by competent, capable people. I don't need to go outside of my role to support them.

... This doesn't mean I shouldn't be prepared when I've been told my duties, but it does mean giving some leeway.

Interviews are like that. Make a list of what to have, questions to ask, references and stuff, then space it out over the next few days so you have stuff to do,but aren't manic about it?

Came back to work today at BMW after my five day weekend. The weather is changing rapidly and it is making my knees ache so bad it hurts to stand, much less hobble around. 800mg of NSAID later and it is just a slight throb when I walk.

Most of the people I am currently working with are split between early twenties and mid forties. Very few near me at twenty eight. The younger people bend down and torque their backs all the time trying to be in a hurry. Screw that noise there is a reason the door is on a lift. Bring that bad boy up to my level. Bad enough being on my feet ten hours without adding in back strain.

It's not better there. People poop everywhere at Disneyland

When I went to Disneyland, they had some of the cleanest toilets ever.

I have no idea how the cleaners kept up with the crowds, I didn't even see any.

My guess is that the cleaners were disguised as tourists so that people would see these clean toilets and no cleaners and believe in magic.

Apparently I'm hot stuff because I've been offered another job at an IT company. I'm very much leading towards the first one, but the recognition is nice. I make no promises it won't go to my head.

That's funny, I remember walking down one of the thoroughfares and seeing a fairly good size pile of poop just right there in the middle of the pavement.
I know they do have industrious cleaning crews, so I probably just missed the pooper by a minute or two. The crews were probably busy keeping the regular johns clean.

Technically I've always been on call 24/7, but we had a form for something that mentioned it and I really wanted an option of you don't even begin to pay me enough to be on call 24/7. At all.

Another consultant has complained about the uselessness of a client contact I'm going to have to work with on something starting today. I try to be serene and think I've got to work with this guy, at least need to try to respect him and get along.

Get first email from them, look at the first line, reproduced here exactly as received:

    Hi,

    So

My dream job has basically been posted. Working on animatronics and being flown around the world to help design/fix/create them for Disney? Holy geez. That's. That's basically everything I've wanted since Grade 3.

I'm going to apply to it tonight but to be honest the idea of doing so absolutely terrifies me. If I got the position it'd involve moving coasts *and* countries. I've never worked outside my home city! That's scary!

As someone who wishes that she knew what the hell her dream job would be:

    Apply.

You have to apply. Get that out of the way and you can start thinking about logistics later. If you land an interview and they make a job offer you don't have to accept it if it just doesn't work for you right now. But you'll never know if that will happen unless you try and go for it.

To make it less scary, there are a lot, and I mean a LOT, of rad forumers near both US Disney locations. If I was a mechanical engineer I'd kill to be an imagineer. Good luck!

    107 cases on Monday.
    148 cases on Tuesday.
    166 cases yesterday.
75 cases today in only three hours.

Assuming I start slowing down from general Thursday Blah Syndrome, I'll still be breaking 170 by the end of today.

I should probably feel bad about outpacing the veterans by such a large margin, but fuck 'em.

The sun and I disagree on a fundamental level. If I move to California I'm pretty sure I'd need a parasol and unlimited amounts of sunscreen to be added to my benefits package; otherwise I could only work at night to prevent my body from turning to ash in the daylight.

I'll definitely apply and see what happens! I could always just aim to work there for a year and come back if I get real homesick anyhow. There doesn't appear to be a contract or permanent specification on the job listing either. Hm.

Eh, it's not that awful if you don't like the sun either. I'm not a sun-lover and was able to survive in Oakland, land of pavement and sunshine.

I had one of these moments last week with a job ad for a lawyering job that would actually use my IT and project management experience. I applied and I'm working some connections I have at the firm to get an interview. It's a dream job in an area that I want to live (San Francisco) that would set me up to take my career anywhere I wanted.

Just gotta get that darn interview.

    The owner, no

    My direct boss (COO), yes

Until I have a solid offer from the consulting company, we're keeping it quiet, while my boss tries to come up with an angle that doesn't totally fuck the company, because the owner (and his son) are both overly emotional, knee-jerk goons who would rather kick someone to the curb immediately instead of hiring a replacement and having them train with me to make it a smooth transition.
