Computer won't power on

I built my desktop computer about 2 yrs ago and it has worked great. This morning, I pushed the power button and it spun up (fans and lights) for about 1 second then died. Pushing the power button does nothing any more. I tried checking the power cables and cycled the battery backups. This time, when I pushed the power button, it repeated the brief spin-up before dying. I don't recall any beep codes.

Internal inspection reveals the on-board power button is lit solid red. Pushing this does nothing.

I have tried testing my power supply with the paper clip method and it was able to power everything but the motherboard (fans, SSD's, etc).

I don't remember my specs other than listed (sorry!):
ASUS p8z68-v
Corsair ax750
Intel i5
MSI Twin FrozrII
Corsair DDR3 8GB (2x4GB)

You need to remove as many factors as possible to better detect what is causing the problem. Disconnect everything from the PSU and motherboard except CPU+cooler, memory and see what happens. If it's still no go then take everything left apart and reconnect and try powering up once again.

I'd suggest removing all but one stick of memory as well. Next step is to swap the memory sticks in case one of them has died on you.

The first thing I would do is remove the CMOS battery, if you have one (you may not, which means this post isn't helpful). Wait about 15 minutes, then replace the battery. Then see if it powers on.
