When you talk about Square Enix, you are likely to be mentioning one of the many RPGs it has in its repertoire. However, it has been known to dabble in one or two different areas, as the recent foray into sports territory showed with Mario Slam Basketball. Now it is bringing a long-standing non-RPG series to the DS in the form of Itadaki Street. But will gamers be as eager to lap this up as they do with the company’s numerous role-playing titles?
The question is what exactly is Itadaki Street anyway? Well, many have described it as the videogaming equivalent of the immensely popular family board-game Monopoly, whilst others have stated that from the screens show so far it might as well be deemed as the next outing in the multi-million selling Mario Party series. Both views are not entirely wrong, but the game is rather unique in its own right because of a few extra additions, and has been developed over many years, dating as far back as 1991 when it made its début on Nintendo’s Famicom. Whatever the case, this updated version is looking extremely attractive from what has been revealed so far, with chunky 3D graphics of a level previously seen in the recent release Final Fantasy III and it is likely to have an excellent soundtrack as well, lifting snippets from both the DQ and Mario series. At least on the presentation side you cannot fault it so far…
Anyway, this will, in fact, be the seventh version in the series, which has grown in stature over the years to the point where the special PlayStation 2 version in 2004 that featured both characters from the Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy series actually went on to sell nearly half a million copies, followed by a port of the same game to the PSP last year, accruing over 100,000 units. Some were disappointed to find that the Final Fantasy characters have been ditched this time, but that is the reaction of Western gamers that seem to forget just how popular the Dragon Quest series is and what sort of resurrection Mario is currently undergoing over in Japan. The DQ series is by far a stronger brand over in Japan than in the West, and New Super Mario Bros. on the DS is cruising towards 3.5 million copies sold in only five months – so clearly sticking the two together is a very wise move indeed by Square Enix.

And Lewie, what the hell: "Dwii-agon Quest"? That doesn't make sense, no matter how you try that rationalize it.
It's Dragon Quest + Wii. It makes perfect sense
"Dwiiagon Qwiiest Swiirds"? Oh God...
There was a Final Fantasy+Dragon Quest one a while ago, I believe.

Plus, D-wii-agon Quest? Ugh. Enough with the terrible Wii puns, please.
never
Also, Lewie, there've been a lot of really terrible attempts at Wii puns out there, but that was one of the worst, if not the worst.
Any word on a US release yet?
Everyone check the rules thread. Especially you, LewieP.
