Recommend Me a Fan!

So, it's not even summer yet, and here in San Diego it's been an ass-blistering 98° F for the last three days, cooling off little at night, with no end to this bullshit in sight for at least a week. Air's been muggier than Hell, too. Feels like I'm trying to breathe soup. My girlfriend and I share a tiny room in a three-bedroom second floor apartment and are slowly roasting to death.

With murmurs I've been hearing about this upcoming summer being the hottest on record ('round these parts in any case) and with no AC in my place, I feel it might be time to invest in an alternative to my piss-poor excuse for a desk fan. Something that works well but won't bankrupt me is preferable. Please recommend me something, tell me the pros and cons, what's worked for you, etc.

I just got one of these to keep near my bed and it's fantastic. The key is to aim it at about 45 degrees so it circulates the air in the room. We have central air but I don't like running it if we don't need to, and because of the building's construction we don't have light boxes to install ceiling fans. This was a great solution for me.

Do you have windows big enough for box fans? Even if you don't have windows on both sides for a cross breeze, sometimes getting a big 'ol fan into the window can make a huge difference. You can pull a little air in from outside even if the wind isnt in your favor.

If your roommate situation is super friendly, you may want to consider collaboration to keep doors/windows open for a little while in the evening to disperse the heat of the day after sundown. Once you control the temp, you can close things up.

    Completely agreed.

Specifically one facing into your apartment and one facing out. Its what helped me live through a year of Florida without air conditioning. It might sound counter to the goal to have a fan pointing outside, but it sets up a constant air flow through the room.

I have 2 of these (one at home and one and work) and I love it. It's loud, but super powerful. I like that I can put it on the floor and angle it upwards.
