Honestly, I'm a bit proud that people actually put their foot down and put their money where their mouths were (to mix metaphors). When Microsoft marketed its console badly and people got upset, it boded badly, but mostly, people don't follow up on what they say. And Microsoft is still on hot coals, backtracking - to the point that their entire Xbox One philosophy has almost evaporated.
There was a lot of good in the philosophy - such as being able to trade in digitally purchased games - but it was too publisher-centric. Requirements like having console online during the trade-in process makes sense, but heartbeat? F*** that.
The Kinect implementation in games has yet to feel like it adds anything. Whether that be due to processing time or simply the developer, it always feels forced. Leaning, for instance, requires you to be playing the game in a position which makes sense, and it isn't worth it. During Tomb Raider there's what, six moments MAX? And voice commands are often too slow to make sense.
That said, Kinect != Herpes. The biometric and voice controls offered in the OS work well (switching controllers moves profiles, turn on/off, use voicecomm to move around).
This change simply does one thing: It guarantees games that are not Kinect-centric will never have key Kinect-only controls offered... so devs cannot count on install-base all having the Kinect sensor. I'm undecided if that's a good thing or not - but with what's been offered sofar, it doesn't hurt a thing.

What about the early herpes adopters? Do they get anything from embracing full blown herp? Other than the effects of it that is.
I can't wait to hear the DLC/see the 4th panel for this one. Is it just about bashing the X-Box One?
More just the Kinect. I remember multiple times in the podcast when Gabe mentions how much he loathes the Kinect (particularly when at one point it starts listening to him after he says the word "box").
I had an xbox one and hated the Kinect. My wife hated the Kinect. Any one I had over hated the Kinect. I am now much happier on a PS4. This may make me take another look. I can wait for the inevitable price drop on this new version as well.
See, I thought that the comic was talking about not needing Live Gold for things like Netflix and Hulu, not the lack of Kinect...
I haven't cared that much about the 360 version of the Kinect. Some of the games were a lot of fun, like Kinect sports and Kinect adventures, and the kids love the Double Fine Kinect game.
My XBox 360 wasn't really seeing much use though until Child of Light came out and I could let my daughter help me by playing with the firefly.

I would describe my feeling toward the kinect as 'apathy,' not 'hatred.' I'm sure a few developers are doing some compelling things with it, just not any things that I'm interested in.
the whole reason to own a console in the first place is to be able to pick up a controller and play a game relatively quickly with a minimum of stupid bullshit being involved in the transaction. Microsoft's gradual stripping the 'stupid bullshit' out of the process of owning their console I can only attribute to poor sales, so, good.
hold your head high soldier, it ain't over yet
that's why we call it the struggle, you're supposed to sweat
It's users like you, who just want a game console to play games, who keep breaking the hearts of all those developers who want their box to become the One All-Encompassing Media Solution and Gateway to the Shining Digital Future.
For shame.

@Kagera
The early herpes adopters clearly get the joy of having it for longer than if they bought it later! Sometimes, early adoption is it's own reward.

...I don't think anybody does.

NBA 2k14 (I think that's the one) cites you with a technical foul if you curse while playing the game. Its purpose has been achieved.
Not until it kicks people from COD when they talk about banging my mom.
People who swear at video games are probably compensating for something
also, you probably haven't played a dark souls game.
