Maya Angelou, dead today at the age of 86, was one of America's most famous and treasured literary minds and poets. Her evocative and emotional writing has touched the lives of countless millions, as did her social activism. She will be sorely missed.

    (she was 86)

86 is a pretty great age to get to, especially considering that she was active until she was like, 80. She was really frail and had heart problems, I hope it was peaceful. She was a really powerful writer.

"I know why the caged bird sings" was an incredibly instructive work when I was in high school and gave me huge insight into a part of culture I had no exposure to previously.

If you made me make a list of the 5 best writers I've ever read, and I'm not talking about works but just the pure quality of their writing and their ability to make you think "well there's no way I could ever have written that thing that way in a million years," Maya Angelou's on it for sure. Her words were gorgeous.
