Daelwynn moves up and can tell that Karimyr is listening intently, oblivious to the world. The front door, however, remains open just a crack, beckoning.

Meanwhile, inside the house, Halek opens a door of his own and peers through. The room is dark, without windows, so only a tiny bit of light seeps in through the opening he just made. Naki begins to growl however, and as his eyes adjust, the ranger can see markings on the floor, as well as the closed front door--markings that look suspiciously like dried blood. A faint, rhythmic noise teases Halek's ears. Something small sits at the center of the markings in the midst of the arcane, tribal markings--is that a heart? And is it still beating?

Scalrag takes a knee and peeks past Halek through the door. He blinks a few times, then glances at his companions. "Yeah, that's why you don't go first."

    Halek

Halek turns back to his party. You might expect such a sight to cause someone to become more than a little unsettled, but Halek only gets angry. He feels a strong temptation to burst through the door and stab the first thing he sees, but manages to resist. Maybe he's learning to control his temper, or maybe he's just afraid of whatever magic lies beyond the door. He convinces himself it's the former.

    @MikeyCTS
"Lenore, there's a beating heart in the middle of a bunch of runes. Any idea what that could be for?

"Not that, you know, you do that kind of thing, just... magic.

    "Sorry.

    "Where's Karimyr?"

@Mikey CTSLenore would recognize the symbols as being similar, but not identical to her tribe's. They remind her of an older form.

Has Lenore seen this sort of thing before?

    Lenore the Strange

Lenore arches her brow at Halek, clearly annoyed with his behavoir. She expects better from him, really. It is the sort of awkwardness Lenore expects from Scalrag. She sighs and knelt down, peering into the room. She leans against her sheild and sets down her mace, taking great big sniffs of air. She runs her finger along the outside of the doorframe then touches it to her tongue. Lenore then immediately spits, picks her mace, and Hmm's bemusedly. It seemed so familiar, like one of the many things her elders had warned her about...

@InkSplat‌ I believe that she has seen it before. You see, when her elders spoke Lenore would listen.

Scalrag steps back to give Lenore a better view and the space to do whatever spooky bone-throwing weirdness will presumably follow.

He approaches one of the front windows and peers between the boards at Daelwyn and the remarkably-focused Karimyr.

"Good news," he calls. "No monsters behind the door. You can guys can come in. Just ... watch your step."

Daelwyn steps past Karimyr and enters the building. He draws his short sword, something about Lenore's stance and Karimyr's focus has him on edge. Something is off about the tune of this house.

  • InkSplatInkSplat 100%ed Bad Rats. Registered User regular
    @Nealneal actually...

Daelwyn steps into spacious entry-way lit by numerous candles hung on the wall. The room seems a bit at odds with the exterior of the building, but remodeling has to start somewhere, perhaps? Despite having heard Scalrag call to them, the thief seems to be nowhere in sight. A single, large double-door sits at the opposite end of the foyer.

Stuff for Lenore coming up in a moment. But wanted to get this up since it was a bit more immediately important.

Lenore recalls the stories, of Ancestors who guided some of her people down different paths. Some were innocent enough, others more malicious, but always they walked a fine line in their dealings with the Sleeping Ones. Each time the threat was put down, and the last attempted splinter group had been exterminated decades ago.

    Lenore the Strange

"Not possible," Lenore said in hushed tones. "The last of them were destroyed decades ago."

Letting her shield and mace drop at her sides, Lenore pulls a small pouch from her belt. From within she procures a small peice of white chalk. Upon the floor Lenore draws a perfect circle, learned through many years of practice, surrounded by bizzarre glyphs. Pulling from the same pouch a handful of small animal bones, she turns to face the west. Bowing Lenore rattles the bones in her cupped hands over her head.

"Oh Great Ancestors, please but lend me a portion of your grace and wisdom! Tell me, is it true? Have the others returns? Do the lost ones walk amongst us again?" she calls before splaying the bones across the circle.

@Inksplat I am petitioning the Ancestors for the secret of whether one of the "lost tribes" have returned.

Once the boards are off, Hawke makes his way in through the window, eventually joining the others

He's more than a little unnerved by a beating heart in the center of a runic circle, but that's not his department.

Hawkeye grimaces and nods, resting his hand on his sword hilt. He always hated the jobs that were hip deep in mage mumbo jumbo.

Giving the circle a wide birth, he moves to open the door that he thinks heads to the front hall, looking for Daelwyn.

@Mikey CTS Alright, so, just to clarify, normally just asking the Spirits to answer your question would be your spell and not Petition. Petition is specifically when you do something regarding their thing, in your case, "Gaining Secrets", so, when you find a secret, you'd be able to get a vision or answer. In this case though, I'd call it a secret that this sect is still around, so that's why I'm giving it the ok. But usually its like, if it was Personal Victory, you'd get a Petition when you beat a worthy enemy 1-on-1. Or for Sacrifice, if you performed a Sacrifice.

Lenore's invokation seems to have some effect, as the bones begin to rattle and bounce violently upon the floor. And then the vision hits her.

The Priestess sees a lurking shadow, lingering on the edge of a crowd. She recognizes the gathering as the Ancestors, but the one in the darkness she does not know. It watches, as it slinks around the periphery, studying the other spirits as they channel their power from the slumbering blackness.

    The vision fades away.

Halek can see that there is an exit that should lead outside, and another door opposite the one they've come through, which likely leads to a similar hallway on the other side of the house.

As Hawke grips the handle, he finds it doesn't budge. No matter how hard he pulls, there isn't even a rattle in the frame--its as if it was simply a part of the wall.

Halek feels the hair on the back of his neck stand up as he touches the frame, and he could swear he hears the heart beat a bit louder with every attempt to open the door. It seems pretty clear that whatever spell the heart is a part of is keeping the door sealed. But it also strikes him that Daelwyn didn't ask about the jammed door, but rather where Scalrag was, after being told to come on in.

A claustrophobic feeling of panic overcomes Halek, and he starts to lose his composure. He places his arm across Hawke's chest, and gently pushes against him, signaling to back away from the door.

He rushes back to the window and shouts out "Daelwyn! Karimyr! Get out of the house, now!"

Turning around, he slowly walks towards the desecrated organ, blood still slowly oozing out with each pump. "This... thing is keeping us trapped. Keeping us apart. We have to destroy it."

He pulls out his spear and stands poised over the beating heart, ready to strike it down, and scans the room as if looking for approval. His eyes lock to Lenore's, his fear visible despite his best efforts to stay calm.

    Lenore the Strange

Lenore's irises fade away as the vision strikes her, then she suddenly snaps back with a soft gasp as they regain their deep, browning coloring. She gathers the bones back into her pouch and stands up. As she secures her shield she catches Halek's frightened gaze and purses her lips disapprovingly. "Calm down," Lenore said. "Panicking will not help the situation. We don't know what could happen if we smash the heart. Destroying it could be catastrophic.

"Whoever set this enchantment is the sort of person without respect for the source of their power and even less regard for others," she mused, pointing her mace at the still-beating heart. "They are tampering with forces they don't understand.

"Still we keep out wits about us and we'll get through this. And with any luck find the child, too."

    Hawke, ex-Legionnaire

Hawke moves back with Halek's hand. He's in agreement with Halek. Paranoia around magic was a healthy survival skill.

Nodding at the pouch of bones, Hawke asks, "So, what did you figure out? What's this whole rigmarole supposed to do, anyway?"

Scalrag watches Halek rush back and forth, bemusedly following the Ranger back to the room with the heart. As Halek prepares to stab the organ, Scalrag advances half a step with his hands raised in a placating gesture.

"Whoa, let's hold off on the random stabbing, ok? Everything's alright. If we need to regroup with Daelwyn and Karimyr we can just go out a window, right?

"I think we should focus on getting Karimyr in here so she and Lenore can figure out what this means, and then we can figure out what to do next. "

He glances past Halek to Hawke and gives the ex-legionnaire a meaningful look. "I think it's important that we not be hasty , right Hawke?"

Finally, He shoots a look at Naki and whispers, "Get your Man under control; he's making you look bad. "
"Don't be hasty" - or variants thereof - is Scalrag and Hawke's code phrase for "if this goes pear-shaped, do something"

Scalrag relaxes as Halek stands down. "Ok, that's good. Now all we need to do is get this mangy mutt away from me. " He jabs his foot at Naki, not intending to hit the wolf, just drive it off. Instead he finds himself with the toe of his boot locked firmly in the animal's lightning-quick jaws and forced into a short-lived but embarrassing tug-of-war for control of his own leg. Having been released, Scalrag takes a step away from Naki, and calls out:

"Daelwyn, Karimyr, I think the building is protected by some kind of illusory magic. See if you can penetrate the deception on your end, and maybe poke around for hidden switches or levers that would open up a passage between us."

He turns to Lenore and echoes Hawke's question. "Ok, Weirdling - what do we do about the heart?"

    Lenore the Strange

    Lenore glowered at Scalrag.

"Karimyr!" she shouted. "Come in through the window around the side! We need you in here."

Lenore sighed. "This is more her expertise. But I will try to discern how to break the enchantment."

She set her weapon and shield against the wall. Knelling before the markings she blosters her courage by taking a deep breath. Hand trembling Lenore reaches down to touch the markings, to feel the power within them and trace the symbols. She looks for any familiar patterns in the marking - if this is similiar enough to her peoples, maybe she can decipher what it means.

    Karimyr, Magus

Tcht Karimyr clicked her tongue as she listened to the notes, she remembered very well the sort of magic Lenore wielded very intimately. The way it echoed in her bones as Lenore's spells touched her in the past. They had the feel of unrestrained otherness coursing through them. Karimyr wasn't certain how Lenore could channel the power of her Ancient Ones through her so easily without any visible aid without being consumed alive.

She idly rubbed her wrist, the newest tattoos branding her skin still a bit red from their freshness. It had taken painstaking research to find the proper shielding wards to allow Karimyr to channel the power of the Great Bear Knight in ritual without being instantly possessed and hollowed out by the Knight in the process. But she was digressing, this magic before her was still an unknown. There were a few ways to properly dissect it to figure out what exactly the working had accomplished.

There was no time though for any of the slower ones though as Daelwyn called out for her attentions. If there was still a trace here, then it followed that the effect should be still here as well. Without a moment of hesitation, Karimyr plunged her bare hand into the pool, time to see what sort of tricks had gone around here.

@Kirindal I'm guessing you're talking about the magic you see on the ground, and not the door? Also, what question do you want to ask?

As Lenore begins to study the ritual that had been performed, the heart on the floor begins to glow. A faint red light seems to ignite within it, but the Priestess doesn't notice. As she reads the runes and traces them out, she seems to slip into a trance. The glow within the heart becomes a flaming aura, and as anyone moves close to Lenore to stop her, it flares, a wall of invisible force pushing them back.

The air in the room becomes electric, and the feeling continues to grow, the power tangible to everyone present. And then it releases. An explosion of magic, erupting out from the heart in a crimson shockwave. It knocks Scalrag, Hawke, and Halek to the floor, dazing them momentarily as Lenore screams in pain, as dark magics are channeled through her body.

Just as Dalewyn steps back on to the house's front steps, he hears the scream, but there is no time to react. The wave of energy explodes from the doorway, hurling him through the air. The spell surges forward, catching Karimyr a moment later.

When the group regains their senses, they're not where they were.

Now in a large, dreary room lit by just a few torches, they all land hard on the stone floor. Lenore lays at the center of them, twitching involuntarily as she slowly returns to herself. There are no windows and no adornment, but there are similar markings as in the manor--in fact, there is dried blood at the center of it, where it is likely a heart has been previously.

A wide set of steps leads out of the chamber, offering a way downward.

Naki heads over to Halek, pressing his paws against the ranger's chest as he slowly comes to.

    "Fucking magic."

He gets up slowly, still dazed from the blow. Looking around, he sees that Daelwyn and Karimyr have somehow joined them, and that they're now backed into a corner. He quickly assesses his comrades and sees no discernible injuries, but heads person to person to make sure, waking them/helping up as appropriate, starting with Hawke.

Once everyone is up, he takes point at the stairwell, arrow nocked. He doesn't even ask what happened, content to observe the rest of the group for that particular discussion.

Scalrag accepts Halek's help and rises to his feet. He shoots Naki a look and shakes his head in annoyance. "Of course you were fine, weren't you?"

He looks around, rubbing his forearm. "Well, this isn't exactly what I expected ... but we're all back together, right?" He grins impishly at Daelwyn and Karimyr. "Nice of you guys to join us."

Then he remembers himself and carefully approaches Lenore, staying about a yard away. "You okay? Do you, I dunno, need a drink or something?"

    Hawke, ex-Legionnaire

As soon as the heart begins to glow, Hawke's sword is already halfway out of its sheath. He charges the ritual circle in the middle of the room and audibly smacks into the wall of force. Dazed, he stumbles backwards before being lifted off his feet and flung back by the wall exploding.

As he comes back to his senses, he sees Halek hovering over him, looking mildly concerned. Once it's clear that he's not hurt, Halek moves on to the next person. Hawke remains lying on his back for a second before loudly groaning, "There is no way we're getting paid enough for this job." After another moment, Hawke kips up and gets his bearings.

Hawke checks on Lenore next, relieved to see that she's still in one piece. With the way this day was going, he wouldn't have been surprised if her head had exploded or something.
