    Lenore the Strange

Lenore shrugs as she examines the tomes on the shelves. "In my vision, I saw the Blessed Ancestors and a darkness lingering in their shadows."

She is silent for a moment, her eyes wandering from title to title. Lenore was clearly more tense than she let on. "I do not know where we are. I only know whoever created that ... thing was tampering with forces more dangerous than you. Does it seem coincidental that powers forbidden by my tribe would takes us to an elder of my people?"

Maybe a dirty book that she read as a girl and tries not to get embarassed seeing again.

Edit: I think it would be hillarious if @Iron Weasel‌ noticed, found the book, and stole it so he could relentless flabbergast Lenore with it.

Daelwyn looks around, still not sure this isn't all an illusion. He decides it wouldn't be too impolite to quietly sing a couple bars of "The Dwarf Kings' Lay" weaving it into a basic spell to try and clear Hawke's mind of any lingering enchantments.

The song washes over Hawke, though any change in his demeanor is up to how much he likes the song, more than any magical effect woven into it.

There was no lingering enchantment. Any effects that remain are simply due to the visions Hawke saw, and not actually magical in nature.

Scalrag seemingly materializes behind Lenore and peeks over her shoulder.

" Boedecia the Brazen ?" he says incredulously. "I love that book! The bit where she has to tame the Centaurs by, you know? Unbelievable. Honestly, Lenore, I thought you were way more uptight. Perhaps I've misjudged you."

He wanders off, sporting a shit-eating grin.

    Lenore the Strange

Nearly leaping out of her skin, Lenore struggles to remember how to speak.

"I don't-" Lenore stammered, face flushed. "You- That's not in the boo- I mean, I wouldn't know anything about it!"

    Hawke, ex-Legionnaire

Hawke gives Daelwyn his best everything-is-all-right-no-need-to-worry smile. It's a skill he's perfected over the years, what with his chosen line of work often involving acting as a bodyguard.

Hawke decides to give the room a once over, but he's really looking too hard. After peeking behind the bookcase, Hawke take a glance at the books. He doesn't recognize any of the books, but since most of Hawke's education was militarily focused, it's not surprising. He does give Lenore a sidelong look with a barely suppressed grin while he's at the bookcase.

As you all come into the room, the man smiles yet again and gestures to a plate of food and a decanter of wine sitting at a small table surrounded by large, over-stuffed chairs.

"Help yourself," he says, "the Mistress will be here soon."

He then shuts the door, leaving you all alone.

    What do you do?

Daelwyn nods to Hawke, sheethes his short sword, and then says, "Go ahead Scaldy, pour us a glass. I'll play a tune to pass the time while we wait on our undoubtedly benevolent hostess."

Then he pulls out his pipes and begins to play a lilting tune, reminiscent of butterflies in flight.

Halek walks to the door to see if the old man locked us in here.

He then walks over to one of the cups, dips his fingers into the chalice and gently wafts it, looking for poisons or other malicious substances. He is obviously suspicious but could really use a drink right about now.

Halek finds the door unlocked, and finds the wine seemingly fit to drink--at least, as far as he can tell. Before he can add a bit of a taste test to his investigation, however, an unfamiliar voice chimes in.

"I wouldn't do that, if I were you." A man that was most definitely not in the room previously now stands in the back corner, near where the bookcases end. He's an older man, in robes might have once been quite nice, but now are stained by what appears to be blood, and singed quite badly or torn in quite a few places. "What I would advise, however, is that you all come with me."

    What do you do?

@Kirindal Karimyr would notice a symbol of the Conservatory upon his person (though it looks very, very old). What is the symbol commonly worn by members?

Halek whips around, spear at the ready. He is embarrassed that someone was able to sneak into the room undetected and overcompensates through hostility.

"I don't like getting snuck up on, old man." He starts to approach the stranger, looking him up and down overtly, attempting to appear unimpressed, but is in fact quite affected by the man's appearance. He's clearly seen his share of danger, and that immediately obtains Halek's respect.

"So, you better start explaining how you're mixed up in all of this, and why we should be following you."

In an instant, Scalrag has somehow crossed the room and positioned himself so that Hawke stands between him and the mysterious new-comer.

"So the corollary to Never drink stranger's wine," he says, "is never follow a burned, blood-stained dude for no reason. In other words: What He Said," Scalrag finishes, jerking a thumb at Halek.

Karimyr had to suppress a chuckle from leaking out at Lenore's response to Scalrag. The collection of books certainly didn't look like any collection of illicit material...risque and pornographic perhaps but nothing that immediately promised certain life-threatening peril in the near future. But what did she know, perhaps inside the copy of Annotated Compendium of Local Folklore of the Nughar was a tale that would summon something rather unpleasant if recited in the light of the new moon.

Although if there was a copy of Boedecia the Brazen here, she wondered if the owner had any more of the other bawdy books written by... Karimyr withdrew her hand from running over the books when the new man started to talk. Robes...lots of blood...well this was promising in all the wrong ways...oh? Karimyr paused as she saw the spoked wheel embroidered on the robe, looking very worn and half hidden behind a rather big patch of blood. That wasn't right at all, where was the ivy-embraced obelisk that was supposed to be behind the wheel that represented the High Observatory and the Conservatory in general. And there were quite a few spokes missing on the wheel as well?

Karimyr stared at the man, where had he gotten this robe? The obelisk with the wheel in the foreground had been the symbol of the Conservatory for at least the last two centuries, before then it was either the obelisk alone or the wheel alone. The unified symbol had been created after a dispute with the mages of rival Lightsfall Temple whose own identifying mark was an obelisk which they had claimed represented the ray of enlightenment of the high magics shining on the world. The spokes on the wheel represented the officially recognized schools of magic or the dominions of magic which was more in vogue these days by Conservatory Magi within magic overall. By Karimyr's estimate, the robe definitely had to predate the recognition of Transmigrare or cross-planar teleportations as a separate school from Portare otherwise more commonly known as terrestrial transportation or transitory shifting. That would date the robe back at least another century.

She wondered if he was as old as the robe or if not where he had found that thing. Karimyr knew quite a few historians back at the Conservatory who would have been equal parts fascinated and horrified by the state of the robe. Probably best not to mention it then when I get back. Karimyr had a image of an department of angry magi descending on the man to liberate him of the relic. She wasn't entirely certain about the trustworthiness of this stranger, but on the hand there was the apparently evil Mistress. Is there any chance there's an third option that isn't as terrible as the first two? "I say we wait to see what this Mistress has to say. If we don't like it, you can most certainly start stabbing, Hawke."

    Lenore the Strange

Lenore, having regain a bit of composure, removes some dried clay from her pouch. "Perhaps the Ancestors can offer some guidance..."

She crushes the clay between her cupped hands the presses her lips against a slip between her thumbs. She blows while simultaneously opening her hands, expelling clay dust into the air. The dust begins to swirl and take on strange intertwining shapes till they form the symbol of her faith - a wreath of tentacles writhing in the air. Slowly they begin to drift in a direction...

The old man shifts his gaze to Karimyr, eyeing her for a moment. "Ah, I see. Another from the Conservatory." He seems to examine her, his gaze dancing all about her, as if taking in every little detail. "No," he finally mutters, "wasn't you."

Then he looks to Lenore, as she begins to work her own magics. "But her, I think." The ancient wizard scratches at his chin, smiling slightly.

But the look on the stranger's face turns sour as the tentacles in the air begin to shimmer slightly, turning red and black.

"Ah!" he exclaims, dashing across the room with a speed that seems completely at odds with his appearance. "None of that now!" He crashes his hand through the dust, dispelling the communion all at once. "Your spirits don't dwell here, Girl," he says. "At least not ones you want to talk to."

"Yes," the old man says, turning quickly on his heel, "that's much better. This way." He makes his way back to the corner from which he appeared and raises a hand. He jabs his finger into the air, just a hair away from actually touching the walls themselves, and then drags it downward. "Watch you step," the wizard offers, before stepping forward and vanishing into thin air.

On the other side is a stone hallway, much like one you originally walked down to reach the sitting room. You seem to emerge in front of an old tattered painting of old men smoking rather large pipes. The hallway extends in two directions--one is the way the wizard is already hurrying down, or the opposite.

The bloody old man confirmed every suspicion in Hawke's mind that something was wrong here. There wasn't any chance that he was sticking around. Right before disappearing through the wall, Hawke says, "No offense, Karimyr, but I'm not the least bit interested in meeting the 'Mistress'."

After seeing the old man set off down a corridor, Hawke, making sure to keep his sword arm at the read, follows him. He does hang back far enough to ask Lenore, "So, you knew that guy before, right? Nothing seemed off to you? Nothing at all?"

    Karimyr, Magus

Karimyr wasn't sure what to think of the odd man before them. He seemed to know about the Conservatory, but that wasn't too hard for anyone learn about given that she had the Conservatory emblem stitched onto her bodice. In her opinion, he was clearly a madman of some sort...who apparently had some grasp of magic. So the bloody magic man or the most likely sinister Mistress...wonderful.

Given that the rest of the group seemed inclined towards suicide in the form of the bloody man... Well, survival was higher in a group than facing any unknown alone. She sighed, besides she had to keep an eye on Halek over there. He had funny ideas about magic and the last thing she wanted was him to pick up all the wrong ideas from odd men in blood-stained robes.

"Fine, but don't say I didn't warn you if we're knee deep in something squamous ten minutes from now." Karimyr gripped her staff even tighter as she approached the invisible gate. First sign of trouble, the old man was getting brained.

    Lenore the Strange

Lenore startles, still tucking the book into her satchel when Hawke approached her. Thankfully, he didn't seem to notice. He clearly had more pressing concerns on his mind. She takes a breath then tucks the Boedecia the Brazen deep, deep into the bag. "No, I did not know him. But one must always show difference and respect to one's elders," Lenore answered steadily. "You don't think it odd that magic forbidden by my people would land us exactly at his footsteps? Furthermore, my people have no 'mistress': it is not a title we use.

The Wizard is hurrying along, taking turns here and there, and leading you who knows where. He does, however, seem to know where he's going, as there's never a moment's hesitation. Until, that is, he stops in mid-turn and begins to back up, slowly.

A column of skeletons makes its way down the corridor, an eerie red light emanating from within their rib cages.

"Well, if she wants to do things the hard way," the old man mutters. "Come on, this way!" He then takes off at a near-run down a different corridor as the marching Clacks! echo toward you.
