See Inquisitor's tonkatsu a flood of memories came back to me of various Asian food
Now sadly I know I will never get to eat this stuff again.....
What's stopping you?
No one around here sells it let alone makes it
much like the joke at work of the frozen chicken fried steaks that say restaurant quality
I make fun of it saying would you be more likely to buy it if it said Truck Stop Quality?
Aww that sucks.
I'm just spoiled living in a huge diverse city and it always feels weird remembering that there's places where you can't go get food from basically anywhere.
I once betrayed a vegetarian. I made a pasta dish with some chicken stock and I didn't remember until they had started eating it and then I couldn't tell them.

You're lucky they didn't get sick.

edit: that said i recall it being basically impossible to get good japanese in the uk. there was like one decent place to go to in cambridge, and then i had a 'sushi roll' from marks and sparks which i think made me question whether the uk was the right place to be eating japanese food at all
Both times were at a restaurant in Portsmouth called Sakura. I love that place.
First time I went I had something called "katsu" something? Maybe? It was breaded chicken, noodles, vegetables and soup. But all in the same bowl. Like they made a meal out of noodles, meat and veg and just went "Fuck it, put it in a bowl of soup".
It was so tasty. And also maintained the temperature of the sun through the entire meal, somehow.
Also I'm not sure why but a lot of people straight up don't connect fish = meat
This has its roots in Catholic fasting rules which forbid red and white meat, but allow the consumption of fish. The Anglican and Lutheran churches continued the tradition of fasting in this fashion during Lent for a long time. If someone accused you of eating non-fish meat during Lent in Elizabethan England, this would actually lead to a criminal investigation.
There's some weird fucking interpretations of vegetarianism out there
I can't count the number of people that try to get away with 'fish is not meat'
Someone tried to tell me that eggs were meat, before
Wtf
Yeah, sure, if there's a fetal chick in there
There are a lot of pescatarians out there
Also I'm not sure why but a lot of people straight up don't connect fish = meat
My girlfriend has two undergrad degrees and a masters, she's smart as hell
Until like last year she did not think fish were meat
When I asked what they were then, she said "fish"
I think that's just a disconnect for some people
It's a cultural dietary thing. There's things like the Catholic tradition of "no meat on Friday", which means "Fish on Friday".
The definition of what is meat is going to change from culture to culture. Just remember that if you're the one with the dietary restriction, check first.
Listen man, if somebody wants to call themselves a vegetarian while eating hog carcass I'm not going to confront them about it
I don't care unless they're trying to explain to me what isn't actually meat. Based on where I live, it's something that does happen! Vegans tend to be more aggressive, though.

Actually havnt talked about it at all besides being told at some point that they don't eat meat but then one time I made some carbonara and they were down

I've met plenty of nice vegans, too! And have had plenty of delicious vegan meals!
When I first heard the term "bloodmouth," I thought it was a fucking joke
still do, just not in a good way

Yeah I didn't mean to imply every vegan is the worst
But hoooooly shit the aggressive ones
when I group you in a similar category as pro-life extremists you might be coming on a little strong
When I visit Japan at one point in the future, I'm probably going to have a hard time since I don't really like seafood
Maybe because I grew up in a country which is entirely landlocked
I don't know
You will be fine, Japan has plenty of non-fish food. As long as you stay away from sushi places you will be fine actually. In my experience most restaurants have few to no fish dishes. I think fish dishes tend to be more associated with home cooking and thus not the type of thing you see at a restaraunt as much.
There are a ton of meat dishes to enjoy.
Where you are screwed as someone visiting Japan is if you are a vegetarian or vegan.
I'm not vego/vegan myself, but the friend I travelled Japan with is.
It wasn't as bad as I thought it'd be! We found plenty of great places for him to eat, and while quite a few were vegan places there were a good few that offered us both viable options. We did on quite a few occasions eat at different places (one after the other) but it wasn't so bad.
So not totally screwed. You just have to hunt around a bit.
Also Japanese curry isn't strong enough for me to enjoy it as a spicy meal, but I do still really love it. Best occasion was finding a little curry joint in Shin-Aomori at like 11PM while it snowed with wind chill below -20c or something equally as ridiculous to my Australian temperature conditioning. We had like an hour before we caught our next train, and boy was some great warm curry just what we needed.

ipso facto it's not meat obviously
I would say that if you're a vegetarian who is doing it for ethical reasons, yes.
i mean personally I dislike almost all seafood but I know other people really like it.

Ah, we call this "not actually being a vegetarian"
Which is fine!
If a person has a justification in their head that makes "I only eat pigs" make sense for them then that's great
They just probably shouldn't call themselves vegetarians
But I'm glad I tried, because now I'm more inclined to have vegetarian meals.
