Yes yes yes....IE sucks, use chrome use firefox etc. Lets just get that out of the way.

Now, to the problem. A week or two ago IE on my personal computer decided to stop working. It starts, and opens to a white blank page, not going to my homepage, and I can go to the address bar, or select a favorite, but it just stays on that white page with no sign that its doing anything. I can right click on tabs and select properties for the given page in the bar, but i do not have a tools bar showing up at the top, so im unable to look at the settings for IE and figure out whats going on. (Windows 8). So, if someone could tell me how to open up the preferences or options menu in some roundabout way, that would be more helpful then 'dont use IE'.

Thanks

Have you uninstalled and reinstalled it?

Also, have you checked your add/ons or cleared your cookies/checked for malware that could be affecting your browser?

Did you happen to come across a website recently that looked something like this:

There are a few dozen viruses that capture your computer like this. You'll open IE, get a blank page and locked out of settings.

See if you can get it to open with start->run (or windows key + R) and type "iexplore.exe -extoff" and see if it'll actually load up. If it doesn't, you've likely got something in the system messing with you.

not a doctor, not a lawyer, examples I use may not be fully researched so don't take out of context plz, don't @ me

Yes, I've gone through the tried and true "Is it plugged in, is it turned on, have you rebooted" trilogy before posting.

I can't see your post picture from work, so will check it when i get home. I can run chrome no problem.

control panel -> Internet options -> Advanced

    Then click reset.

In windows 8 you can just hit the windows key and just type Internet options. If you are on windows 8 (not 8.1) click settings under the search window that pops up.
