Announced during Nintendo's E3 event, this game looks awesome.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8L54s2m1dPshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWdPJeY7eYg- The point of the game is to control territory by covering more of the map with ink than the other team.
- Primarily you attack with ink in human form, but squid form has a number of its own advantages including great mobility and hiding while submerged.
- The game pad gives an overhead view of the whole map which is a great way to help judge your progress and areas that need work. You can see where all your teammates are, and can instantly super jump to them by tapping them on the screen.
- Attack options include the basic ink super soaker, splatter bombs, huge paint rollers, bazooka, sniper rifle, and what looks like an orbital ink cannon.
- You have a limited amount of ink ammo, displayed in a tank on your back. You regenerate it naturally, though slowly, unless you submerge into squid form which is a quicker regen. Looks like there are balloons floating around the map that are ink refills if you shoot them.
- If you have ~70% of a tank available, you can use a splatter bomb which covers a huge area with ink but consumes a lot of your tank.
- Your contribution to ink coverage and player kills add up over time to eventually grant you super weapons like a bazooka, which you can fire at will for a limited time. Lays down really long linear shots of ink.
- Some things can't be inked, which means you might have to jump over panels as you're swimming in squid form.
- There are grates that block your progress, but if you ink through them you can swim under them as a squid.
- Ink on the walls doesn't count toward your total progress, but it does offer a strategic advantage as you can then hide on the walls in squid form...however, you'll need to maintain your height by continually swimming upward, which leaves a telltale ripple effect.
You really gotta see this video for proof of concept and a look at most of the mechanics in action:

Drive-by impressions from people who played it on the show floor at GAF:
Just played it on the showfloor, had a blast with it: looks sharp and cool, plays nice, feels really great.
Just played it. It's fun. Controls better with gyro, though, and that's weird.
This was the last game I played today, and it's probably the most fun I had. There's an incredible amount of coordination and skill required to win a game.
If you watch the preview from the direct earlier today, you have the gist of the gameplay, but holy crap there's a lot of strategy involved. The first game we played, my team got stomped bc our team was too focused on the choke point. It's a lot of fun regardless
It's crazy how dynamic the gameplay gets. One moment you're shooting the walls for points, the next you're getting shot at by the other team, causing you to turn into squid mode to run away. But then the other team is covering your paint with theirs so you're frantically trying to avoid the other color area. Then your friend backs you up and there's just this battle for territory happening. So much fun.
One other thing to point out is how well designed the one map was. There's multiple side alleys lead to higher ground on chokepoints for an advantage. And there are lower levels that help you get different angles on people above. Then there are gates that you could only pass by shooting paint and going under using squid mode.
Just an overall fun game that I'm really excited about. I can't wait to see what else they add
Fan arts:
Don't forget to press ZL to Squid.

Also, this is definitely a character I wanna see in Smash.
Just really surprising to me to see Nintendo going a little punk, kind of Jet Grind Radio style.
Oh yeah, I didn't mean for this Smash game.
Although, I wouldn't rule it out by means of DLC or amiibo.
So I'm following this with interest while also having no intention of buying it.
If you don't get it
Also might have missed it in the op but there seems to be other weapon classes like the sniper in the trailer .
I don't know if they are classes to choose, it feels like they want to focus on an even playing field where everyone has the basic shot to start with.
It's possible that before a match you can choose what single use ability you get when your tank is at 70% (the red triangle on it, seen in the screenshots). In the demo I think everyone had a splatter bomb grenade type thing.
It's also possible that before a match you can choose what your super weapon is, the fire-at-will thing you get after inking/killing for a while and filling your meter.
Or maybe both of these things can be changed by finding items in the arena.
If I wasn't already going to buy this game, I would've been swayed by this incredibly awesome picture.

Yeah it's vaguely reminiscent of Portal 2 paint stuff, even though it's not the same mechanics.
Yeah, first info yesterday. The internet is fast.
I know lots of games get fan art when they're announced, but I think it's a good sign for the game's popularity (that, along with a really positive reaction across a number of message boards).
Little bit of footage someone took yesterday.
Color me excited! :winky:

It's a game starring cute squid kids, fan artist were already going to be all over it for all the right and utterly wrong reasons.
This is the one game that will force me to get a Wii U. All I'm really afraid of are the usual Nintendo worries when it comes to online, especially for a team game.
Mario Kart 8's online works great. Pokemon X & Y's was pretty much flawless as well.
That's good, but it's absolutely not what I meant. If someone still believes every Nintendo online game is like Brawl, that's his problem, not mine.
...alright, I just want good voicechat options for Splatoon. Can't really have a team game without it, to me.
Like
how do I get it
and also give nintendo all the money for this game
and the squid button!
aghhh
You can catch glimpses of great skill too, like launching out of the ink as a squid, switching to human, shooting a spot of ink below you, and landing in that spot as a squid again.
Apparently Miyamoto is overseeing the project as producer.
I promise that I will buy every video game that has a "turn into a squid" button.
If I ever fail to fulfill this promise, my soul is forfeit etc, etc.

Best thing I saw was Calamari of Duty.
Oh man, just saw this video with direct feed audio and the music is so good:

EDIT: It just keeps getting better, it seems so un-Nintendo, it's like...a Sega game.
There has to be a good number of people kicking themselves and muttering, why didn't I think of that.
