I think there was a thread on this already, but I can't find it anymore and it's still happening, so yeah.
Going to the first page resets what is marked as the last post you've read, so that after you do that the entire thread starting from page 2 now becomes new. It's kind of annoying and would be nice to see fixed
I notice this in Chrome and Firefox on Windows. I don't know if the same thing happens on the mobile site.
