I can see getting a Vita TV if you don't own a Vita.

But why would you sell your Vita for one?

I could see buying a Vita TV in addition to having a normal Vita

But I'm basically a crazy person

I have a Vita but I would be getting a Vita TV to mirror my PS4 on a TV downstairs and not have to constantly move the PS4 every other day

because most of the vita games i'm interested in are games supported by the PSTV and i'd rather have them on a big screen

    Not Tokyo.

But never seen them in Tokyo either. It's probably either a very small scene or has totally died out.

Like ganguro girls no longer exist at all, really, anywhere.

alright finally watched the zelda sequelitis

yeah pretty much everything he says is either blown out of proportion, an obvious and tired criticism, or just plain wrong

about the only thing i'll give him is that there are too many enemies whose thing is that they run around invincibly for several seconds before you can attack them

buuuuut i think having a few enemies like that is cool, especially because what he failed to show is that those enemies generally counterattack you when you unsuccessfully hit them. he can only game their AI as hard as he does in the video because he knows in advance exactly how they work. the whole idea is to patiently wait for an opening and strike

but like, his big long spiel about the treasure chest? He goes on a huge rant about how cool it is that you get the big key in LttP and there's this long, drawn-out moment of suspense while you backtrack to the big chest to open it up

and then in the same breath he complains that the big chest open animation in oot takes too long

it's there to accomplish the same goal! there's no "big key" in oot, you just complete a major hurdle and then you get the item. so the suspense of backtracking is replaced by the suspense of slowly opening the chest while the music gradually builds to a crescendo

i'll grant that the animation gets over-used a bit in future zeldas, especially WW, but that's not OoT's fault

a lot of his points boil down to, you spend too much time waiting, and too much time talking to NPCs engaging in the plot

and i think that boils down to him just not liking the kind of game that oot wants to be

games have the capacity to create a lot of different experiences. Some of them are tight, directed pieces of constant progress where the player alone drives the action. that's the kind of game that arin likes and he grades every other game by how well it does that

but there's another kind of game that's equally valid. i'ma call it a "cinematic game" because fuck it i can make up words

OoT's not just there to be a toy for the player to screw with the way that LoZ was

it's trying to create a world and construct a narrative, and enhance that narrative by letting the player act in it

this is the kind of game-type that Metal Gear Solid dominates

it's not an experience where the game dominates the story and the story only exists to serve the game, which is what Arin wants out of everythign

it's an experience where the game and the story exist in parity with one another and work to enhance one another

he compares talking to NPCs and reading dialogue that relates to the narrative to having to walk laps around your room before turning the page of a book but that's not accurate at all, it's just a different part of the book that you're reading

complaining that the game involves a story that expands beyond the scope of "boy oh boy isn't it fun to explore and kill monsters you should go find something that will make killing monsters easier" is silly and close-minded. You're not just mashing the A button to get to the "real" part of the game, you're enjoying charming dialogue that fleshes out the world and gives you time to reflect and rest. It creates, y'know, one of these things:

    Rising+Action.gif

without the downtime, a narrative can be exhausting and difficult to absorb. Chatting up NPCs and completing simple tasks like getting a cat out of the tree isn't the only way to introduce downtime into a game narrative, but it's certainly not a bad way to do it either

i honestly tried to listen to his arguments with an open mind but the majority of them really did boil down to "this isn't like the NES game was and it has different goals that don't line up with my personal preferences and i don't like it"

Ironically that video is not available in my country.

But it has Hatsune Miku in the title so I assume it contains terrible dancing.

    Pretty well, I think?

Though I am sure lots of people were "only" enjoying it "ironically" or something.

and it's video games, not anime!

what i do think the sequelitis ep is right about is that zelda has become much more beholden to its formula than it used to be

and i share his optimism that link between worlds reperesents a shift in how nintendo is thinking about zelda

hopefully the new one will validate that optimism
