My girlfriend, who I love to bits, has a terrible of habit of photographing her food and my food before we eat it. And then hanging out in the restaurant after mulling over what instagram filer to apply to it.

I am really going to miss this girl. I am, I truly am. But man I am not going to miss that little ritual one teeny-tiny bit.

Now that everyone has their own personal handheld film studio and international distribution infrastructure everyone presumes that every random piece of minutiae is worth broadcasting to the world

And then we have special systems in place that directly quantify how socially valuable whatever dumb crap you just posted was

Doesn't the fact that you have to spell it jif for people to even know what you're saying tip you off that it's a completely ludicrous pronunciation

Hard G exists but terminal Fs do not, so it would either be giffu or jiffu, I guess.

My dictionary lists jiffu before giffu, for what that is worth.

    Yes!

    But English is full of those. I mean, the fact that a word spelled g i r a f f e is pronounced ji-raff is well...yeah. English.

Written and spoken language (side note language has a hard AND a soft G) do not match up perfectly and the glyph G represents a multitude of phonemes

One of which is a j sound

    Such as in ".gif "

It seems like whenever I go to work either something amazing happens on the internet or something terrible happens on the internet, with no gray areas

Today was a "something terrible" kind of day, it looks like

It's pronounced that way because there was no word pronounced ji-raff, the guy who named giraffes could pronounce it however he wanted!

When that dude made gifs the Peanut Butter company already had dibs on a word pronounced "jif"

No but giraffe is a bad spelling

Destroy the hard g, just use j

Usage trumps prescribed pronunciations so I feel very comfortable saying that the g in .gif is a hard g.

But oh man if prescribed pronounciations were correct oh good god I would have a field day tearing apart people for the dumbest shit.

"oh you said the e in forte? For something you are good at? Well moron guess what the word has a french root so you better drop that damn E unless you are talking about making shit louder which is an Italian root. Get on my level."

My grandfather's name was Philip Lukegord

Because he was from the rough and tumble days when people called each other by their last names he was generally known as Luke

I was named Philip Luke and called Luke as a reference to him
